Tomorrow is the summer solstice, and so what better day to highlight our most northernly destination? 🌅

Sometimes referred to as The Land of the Midnight Sun, The Yukon is also the land of Canada’s highest mountain peaks, legendary northern parks, the world’s largest non-polar ice fields, several Canadian Heritage Rivers, and healthy, abundant wildlife. Here are some quick facts about Canada’s smallest territory!

🌟 Giving it its “Midnight Sun” nickname, parts of the Yukon can remain bright 24/7 during the summer months. The farther north you travel, the longer the days; once you’re above the Arctic Circle the sun doesn’t set for weeks 🤯

🌟 There are more moose in The Yukon than there are people.

🌟 At 5,959 m (19,551 ft), Mount Logan in Kluane National Park and Reserve is the highest mountain in Canada and the second-highest in North America (after Denali in Alaska) 🏔️

🌟 The name Yukon comes from the Gwich’in word “Yu-kun-ah” meaning "great river”. The Yukon River is the second-longest river in Canada (after the Mackenzie River).

🌟 An estimated 100,000 prospectors flocked to the Yukon between 1896 and 1899, a migration known as the Klondike Gold Rush. Dawson City, the Yukon’s second-largest city, was once the centre of the gold rush, but very few people actually became wealthy from gold in the Yukon 💸

Today’s spotlight is on our self-guided cycling trip Tip-to-Tip and Beyond, which allows you to cover incredible ground on Prince Edward Island! 🚴‍♀️

Canada’s smallest province delivers sweeping beaches, sprawling farmland, epic seafood and famous Maritime hospitality. Prince Edward Island (PEI) is also an avid cyclist’s dream! While our June trips are almost full, there is some limited availability in July and August.

Taking place over six days, you’ll discover the highlights of PEI by cycling the famous Confederation trail, coasting along the scenic Gulf Shore pathways, and biking alongside historic sites and Anne of Green Gables country, not to mention staying in local inns and lodges and savouring world-famous oysters, lobster, and other seafood. 🦞

With our week-long Tip-to-Tip and Beyond self-guided cycle itinerary, we invite you to experience the very best of PEI by bike and at your own pace. By handpicking charming accommodation close to the trail, shuttling your bags ahead, and providing excellent gear, detailed route notes, and handy transfers to avoid traffic, you can ride worry-free. As you bike through dense hardwood forest, along sprawling shoreline dunes, refurbished rail stations and historic lighthouses, you’ll quickly understand why the “Gentle Island” competes with any of the world’s best multi-day bike trips. 😍

Cycle PEI tip-to-tip route and ride along the Gulf Shore on this best of Canada's smallest province self-guided adventure.

There’s no better way to explore Canada’s Unesco World Heritage Sites than on foot or by bike 🚴

The fact that there are 1199 protected UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 168 countries suggests that it IS possible to universally collaborate, coordinate, and celebrate our planet’s natural, cultural, scientific and historical wonders. Canada has more than two dozen sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List distributed throughout the country. Let’s take a closer look at the sites you could encounter on your next active holiday in Canada.

The northern lights have been AMAZING in Canada this year! 💥 They are increasing in frequency and intensity leading up to the "Solar Maximum" projected to hit this coming winter.

Summer is typically not the best time to view aurora borealis, but it's still possible, especially if you're heading far north. To help prep you for the possibility of seeing them while you're here, here are some tips:

👉 We suggest downloading the "Aurora" app to help predict when to see them. Expect to have to stay up past your bedtime, as the best conditions are typically a few hours after sunset on clear nights.

👉 Get to know your camera settings before you try to capture the northern lights. While phones are getting better at capturing good images in low light situations, any camera that has more than the "Auto" setting will be better! Start with these manual settings: turn your aperture as low as possible (f4, or f2.8 if you can) to let in maximum light. Adjust your ISO to start at 3200-6400. Turn the white balance to “daylight”, and shutter speed to a 5 to 15 second exposure. Take a couple of shots that way and then adjust if necessary. If the aurora is very bright and active, then you’ll want to reduce your ISO and/or shutter speed.

👉 Bring warm layers of clothing! The later you stay up to be dazzled by the show, the chillier it will get.

Have you ever seen the Northern Lights? ✨

For our Tombstone Range Hike, we thought it isn't just enough to TELL you about it, we need to SHOW you. 🙌

To say the scenery is simply "beautiful" is an understatement. This dramatic 360 degree view of granite pinnacles is just the beginning...you'll also encounter mirror-smooth lakes, colourful tundra, and wildlife that includes bears, caribou, gyrfalcons and moose. They don't call it Canada's Patagonia for nothing!

There is still availability this summer, but don't wait to long and miss out on this true trip-of-a-lifetime --> https://www.greatcanadiantrails.com/Yukon/Tombstone-Range-Hike

Saturday, June 8th is World Ocean Day! 🌊

Many Great Canadian Trails trips take place along Canada’s beautiful coastlines, so we’re taking extra time this week to appreciate the oceans that surround us. According to the United Nations, the purpose of World Ocean Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, including mobilizing and uniting people for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. One GCT’s defining characteristics is that we provide sustainable travel initiatives. Responsible travel and conservation efforts are of extremely high importance to us, and that extends to taking care of our oceans, too.

To celebrate World Ocean Day, here are a few interesting facts about our planet's oceans!

🐟 The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest and deepest ocean, covering over 30% of the planet. In fact, it’s larger than all of Earth’s landmasses combined!

🐟 The Atlantic Ocean was formed approximately 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period following the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea.

🐟 It is said that we know more about the physical and chemical properties of outer space than we do about the bottom of the ocean. The Challenger Deep, found at the southern end of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, is approximately 10,935 meters (35,876 feet) deep 🤯

🐟 Only 5-10% of the world’s oceans have actually been explored. And the number of species that live in the ocean is unknown!

Now you tell us! What do you love most about the ocean? 🌊

The Caribbean… or Ontario’s Georgian Bay?

Australia’s Twelve Apostles… or New Brunswick’s Hopewell Rocks?

Patagonia… or Yukon’s Tombstone Territorial Park? 🤔

Between three coasts, Canada has plenty of destinations on par with (if not better than!) more famous global counterparts. Canadians tend not to brag about this fact because that’s just not what Canadians do, but it’s true… from the east to the west, the north to the south, Canada is full of spectacular natural wonders that are well worth exploring on an active adventure.

What would you add to this list of Canadian lookalikes? 🤔

Canada has nothing to envy the world's best outdoor destinations. From coastal Maine to Patagonia's mountains, let's look at Canadian natural wonders

Interested in one of our introductory cycling trips? The self-guided Blueberry Bicycle Route in Quebec might be perfect for you! 🚴‍♀️

The Véloroute des Bleuets is a 256 km/159 mile paved cycling circuit around Saint-Jean Lake, approximately two hours north of Quebec City. The well-established route offers a gentle ride through farmland, forest, small towns, lovely beaches, and many small tourist attractions. Relatively short days of cycling allow you to truly discover the region with its warm hospitality and to indulge in the route's namesake - blueberries! 🫐

Throughout the area, blueberries grow wild and are farmed from the end of July to the beginning of September. In season, you'll find them sold by the basket; year-round, you will also find them featured in menus and local products such as pastries, syrups, jams, chocolates, and even combined with local game meat for a real delicacy. Also along the route are fantastic microbreweries (microbrasseries), cheese shops, and plenty of opportunities to sample Quebec's most famous dish - poutine, of course.

Sounds like a “berry” delightful way to spend a week 😉

How well do you know the mountains in Canada? 🏔️

If you love the outdoors, chances are you love the mountains. It’s no accident that many of our itineraries take place in and among Canada’s magnificent mountain ranges! Let’s learn more about them:

🏔️ The St Elias Mountains tower over rock, tundra and icefields across BC, Yukon, and into Alaska. It’s a range that includes some of the biggest peaks in North America, including Canada’s tallest peak, Mount Logan!

🏔️ The Pacific Ocean buttresses the Coast Mountain Range, a rocky spine that runs all the way from Vancouver to the Great Bear Rainforest of northern British Columbia. Coastal peaks overlook fjords that rival Norway for their beauty, attracting climbers, hikers and rafters in summer. In winter, skiers from around the world beeline for the continent’s biggest ski resort, Whistler.

🏔️ The jewel in Canada’s scenic crown, no other range in the country soaks up the attention (and visitor numbers) of the Canadian Rockies in southern Alberta. Supported by the iconic mountain towns and historic national parks of Banff and Jasper, the Rockies are world-renowned for their sharp peaks, gemstone-coloured lakes, wildflowers, wildlife and pristine wilderness.

🏔️ One of the oldest mountain ranges on the planet, the Laurentians don’t loom as large as the peaks out west, but they do provide a four-season playground attracting both outdoor and cultural adventurers. Sprinkled with colourful villages and communities, it is home to Mont Tremblant (the largest ski resort in Quebec), dense boreal forest, rolling hills, over 9000 lakes, and outcrops of ancient Canadian Shield.

🏔️ The east coast of Canada is no slouch in the mountain department. The Long Range Mountains extend 500 kilometres up the west coast of Newfoundland, and while they average just 610 metres (2000ft) in altitude, the mountains are often the backdrop for icebergs, rich bird life and traditional fishing villages.

Which are your favourite mountains in Canada? ✨

09/05/2024

Widely known as one of the world’s best hikes, the East Coast Trail (ECT) combines spectacular coastal beauty with the unique culture of Atlantic Canada. But as so many of our hikers attest, walking the ECT is about more than just the trail itself: it’s about the people, from the locals you’ll meet to the other outdoor enthusiasts you’ll encounter along the way.

It’s also about how you feel when you’re on the trail, surrounded by nature; it’s contemplative, as hiker Lynn Townsend says, and a way to connect with yourself and your hiking companions in a more meaningful way than ever.

At Great Canadian Trails, we want your outdoor adventure to be as stress-free as possible. That’s why we’ve put together week-long, self-guided itineraries that include the very best sections, along with premier hiker’s accommodation, meals, and trail shuttles. We’ll take care of your luggage, too, so all you have to focus on is the beauty of Newfoundland’s stunning Avalon Peninsula. 😍

And beauty there is! Towering cliffs. Deep fjords. Lush forests. The chance to spot migrating whales off the coast, or maybe even an iceberg or two. And after an invigorating day of exploring, you’ll stay in some of the most comfortable and welcoming spots along the trail, spending your evenings dining on local cuisine while sharing stories from the day with fellow travellers. It really is an experience like none other.

Ready to join the adventure? Check out our self-guided East Coast Trail itineraries for the trip of a lifetime. ✨

Did you know that the Trans Canada Trail is the world’s longest recreational multi-use trail? 🇨🇦

Stitching together hundreds of community trails across 28,000 kilometres, consider this: if you were to hike 30 kilometres (19 miles) a day, it would take you about 26 months to complete it. We like to approach the Trans Canada Trail as a gigantic, unfinished jigsaw puzzle, one that can be gradually conquered, piece by piece.

Since many of our itineraries take advantage of the adventure and natural beauty found along this coast to coast, to coast trail, Great Canadian Trails has long supported the Trans Canada Trail. Every self-guided trip that includes a trail section also includes a C$50 donation to the Trans Canada Trail Foundation. This non-profit oversees the ongoing development, maintenance and promotion of the TCT.

A few of our itineraries that explore parts of the Trans Canada Trail include:

🇨🇦 Rum Runners Trail by Bike in Nova Scotia

🇨🇦 Fundy Footpath Hike in New Brunswick

🇨🇦 Niagara Wine and Waterfront Trails in Ontario

🇨🇦 Le P’tit Train Du Nord by Bike in Quebec

🇨🇦 Kettle Valley Rail Trail in British Columbia

So you’ve decided to explore Canada? That’s an excellent choice! As you probably know, we have a ton of inspiring landscapes, a vast network of trails, and incredibly beautiful national parks. It’s obviously a great place to be active, which means you also have to decide HOW you want to explore if you join one of our tours – will it be by bike or by foot?

Advantages of cycling:

🚲 It’s a great option for independent travellers who want extra support – you won’t have to cart your luggage out on the trails, giving you more time to enjoy things like fresh PEI seafood, farm-fresh Quebec blueberries, and local Okanagan wines.

🚲 You can cover greater distances in a shorter amount of time, all while going at your own pace. Start, stop, and take a break whenever you want!

Advantages of hiking:

🥾 Hiking lets you slow down and connect with your natural surroundings, and sometimes it’s also the only way to experience certain places (like some of the country's most iconic panoramas in the Canadian Rockies).

🥾 There are both guided and self-guided options for hiking holidays. This means you’ll have plenty of time for things like inhaling the fresh East Coast air, noticing the details of the rich ecosystem of the Bruce Trail, spotting wildlife on remote shorelines of British Columbia, and reflecting on Canada’s beauty without missing a thing. Or you can also choose a guided holiday, which offers the camaraderie of a small group of international travellers and the local knowledge of an experienced guide.

Either way, you’re in for an amazing adventure ✨

“If you love the outdoors, chances are you love the mountains. As a force of nature, soaring peaks have a way of stirring the soul. Ansel Adams, the famed photographer and environmentalist, captured it perfectly: ‘No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied – it speaks in silence to the very core of your being.’ It’s no accident that many of our itineraries take place in and among Canada’s magnificent mountain ranges.”

Wise words from our ambassador, Robin Esrock! Ready to tackle some of Canada’s mountains for yourself? Try one of the following tours:

It’s National Tourism Week here in Canada, and we couldn’t be more proud to help people experience some of the best of the Canadian outdoors. From the Rocky Mountains to Peggy's Cove to Niagara Falls, there’s so much to explore across the country!

We've talked about our commitment to the Leave No Trace pledge many times, but what does that mean in action?

Let's take wildlife, for example. One of the core principals of the pledge is to "Respect Wildlife", and in Canada, that's a big deal. Respecting animals largely means keeping your distance -- which is not only for their safety, but also yours (hello, bears)! 🐻

But it also means properly stowing food, garbage and other odorous products. And of course, not feeding them. That can harm their health, alter their behavior, or expose them to predators or other hazards.

Animal encounters are an exciting experience, and can serve as a highlight for any trip. Doing so safely and respectfuly is very important, but we hope you never lose the childlike wonder that comes with seeing a wild animal in its own habitat!

For a brief review of some of the animals you might see, we've got a rundown in this blog post

Any outdoor adventure will place you square in the habitat of Canada’s wildlife. That said, there’s a tremendous amount of space for animals to get as

As such, we wanted to share these highlights from the Bruce Peninsula Traverse tour, which we expect will ensure you can make many ✅ on your own personal list!

✨ Hike along the Niagara Escarpment – a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve.

✨ View shipwrecks from a glass-bottom boat.

✨ Keep an eye out for the more than 300 bird species that call this part of the Bruce Peninsula home.

✨ Hike to beach viewpoints that look like Caribbean shorelines but are actually Canada’s postcard-perfect turquoise waters of Georgian Bay.

The concept of "carbon offsetting" can seem confusing (there is a lot of info out there!) so we wanted to take a second to share what that means for us. 🌱

Know that any trip you book with Great Canadian Trails has a net zero carbon impact. How?

It's really simple. First we calculate the emissions produced by each trip. Then we purchase carbon credits through the world’s largest and most awarded carbon project developer (South Pole), which are then put towards Positive Impact Projects.

1 carbon credit equates to 1 tonne of carbon. The projects we support aim to transition communities from fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy, as well as help protect and regenerate forests that capture and store carbon from the atmosphere.

Which means that every step you take with us, or with every push of the pedal, you're helping make the world a better place.

How can we travel and still have a positive impact on our environment? Conscious travellers want to be a positive force on the planet, not part of the

Like you, we care a great deal about our planet, and we have always focused on the kind of travel that leaves a positive impact well after a trip is over.

And because April is Earth Month, we're going to focus on sharing more about what that means to us! We want you to be sure that when you're booking a tour with Great Canadian Trails, you know that we will do right by you and the communities you will visit. 🌎 Not only do we craft all of our tours with sustainability at the forefront, but we also make sure that you will have a unique and authentic experience.

We invite you to review our Responsible Travel policy, and ask us any questions you might have about what this means for your upcoming trip.
