While the conditions were brutal, it was a beautiful day travelling over peaks and terrain I had never seen before. The northern tops were relentless in the snow, and I spent hours getting my legs lacerated by frozen tussock and Spaniard grass. I managed to make up time between Arete and Powell, enjoying every second of those 8 hours. After an hour long detour in the Waiohine, thanks to my bad decision making, I was faced with a 5 hour sprint finish over Cone Saddle and out to Kaitoke. Despite blitzing it over the saddle, the sprint finish wasn’t to be as the last of my triple A batteries died between Tutuwai and Smith Creek, leaving my headtorch with nothing to power it. My phone flashlight once again guided me slowly along the Dobson Loop and into the carpark of glory. Not breaking the 24 hour barrier was disappointing to say the least, but I’m still proud of my ability to push through after feeling completely shattered at Arete Hut. This time last year I had never been past Rocky Lookout, let alone running on the tops, so adventures like these feel truly monumental for me.
