The Duluth Police Department is pleased to announce the opening of Public Safety Ambassador positions, a pioneering initiative in the department's history. With the endorsement of the Duluth City Council, the department is now seeking to hire two full-time Public Safety Ambassadors. This groundbreaking move positions the Duluth Police Department as the first and only police department in Gwinnett County to establish such a unit.
The department expresses its deep gratitude to the Marietta Police Department, whose invaluable assistance and successful Ambassador program inspired this endeavor. Since its inception in 2017, the Marietta Police Department's program has expanded from 8 ambassadors to 14, showcasing the positive impact of such an initiative.
The Public Safety Ambassadors will serve as civilian, non-sworn employees, providing valuable assistance in tasks that can be efficiently handled by a civilian rather than a sworn officer. By delegating these responsibilities, sworn officers will have more time to focus on law enforcement duties that specifically require their expertise. These unarmed ambassadors will be trained to respond to a wide range of non-emergency, low-risk incidents, including but not limited to stalled or abandoned vehicles, road hazards, traffic direction, private property accidents, lost and found property, and assisting in missing person searches.
"We are excited to introduce the Public Safety Ambassador program to the Duluth community," said Chief Jacquelyn Carruth. "This initiative not only optimizes our resources but also strengthens our commitment to public safety. By having dedicated non-sworn personnel handle certain tasks, we can better allocate our sworn officers' time and expertise where it matters most, ensuring the safety and well-being of our community."
Training for the Public Safety Ambassadors will be conducted by the highly skilled personnel of the Duluth Police Department. The department is committed to providing extensive training to equip ambassadors with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their duties effectively.
