Hey Aussie skiers! Thredbo still has day passes available for spring skiing at A$129.

Or you can come to Myoko Kogen 妙高高原 for spring skiing! January and February are pretty crazy but there's still lots of availability in March. Usual base depth in March is 2m+ with occasional pow days and day passes around A$65. 🏂⛷🚡❄☃

La Nina Japan 2025 Winter

Our first forecast update for 2024/25 season in Myoko Kogen is up.

It's the heat of summer here, but still time to crack out the crystal ball and see what the long term snow forecast could be for this 2024/25 season in Myoko and surrounding areas with La Niña Japan 2025!

Typically, during La Niña years, Japan experiences cooler and wetter conditions in winter, which can influence weather patterns and potentially affect, apart from the ski industry - agriculture, fisheries and even societal activities. However, the exact nature and intensity of these impacts can vary from year to year and area to area. At this very early stage the forecast is good with a 60% chance of a La Niña event. ❄😃

You can read the report here: https://naganonow.com/la-nina-japan-2025-nagano-myoko/

This will be updated as forecasts are updated.

『新潟県を含む北陸地方「梅雨入り」去年より13日、平年より11日遅い』

The rainy season has begun in the Hokuriku region, including Niigata Prefecture. It is 13 days later than last year and 11 days later than average.

The prefecture is experiencing unstable atmospheric conditions due to the inflow of warm, humid air toward the low pressure system and front. Heavy rainfall of more than 40 mm per hour is expected in some areas from today, accompanied by thunder, and the amount of rain is expected to increase as we head into tomorrow. Watch out for road conditions and possible landslides.

At this time of year Japanese people hang "Teruteru bouzu" - a small doll that looks like a ghost and is supposed to bring nice weather.

Early call for next season. There’s a 60% chance that La Niña will develop by June–August. Overall, the forecast this month is very similar to last month, and we continue to expect La Niña for the Northern Hemisphere fall and early winter (around 85% chance).

That said, on a broader scale, could a developing La Niña return the global average surface temperature closer to normal? Not very likely. We are just a few months in, and NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Outlook already predicts “a 45% chance that 2024 will rank as the warmest year on record and a 99% chance that it will rank in the top five.”

Stay tuned and fingers crossed!

Flinders Street Train Station Report

After the slow sad decline of season 23/24* we thought, for a laugh, we'd introduce Laurence Hewson doing his thing in Melbourne.

Next season will be better. There are never two poor seasons in a row in Myoko. Not even during the rice famine of 1863-1865 that forced the closure of all local combinis.

We'll hopefully have a season forecast in September or October from the JMA, but are already hearing rumours of a La Nina event. Snow updates should resume sometime in early to mid November.

Myoko Snow Report
23/24 Season Wrap (April 2024)

Lifts are still turning at Arai, Charmant and Seki Onsen, although not all of them. At this stage they are planned to close between May 5-12 but check each resort’s website for updates.

Here’s the short season wrap. Head to https://myokosnowreport.com for the full blurb.

December
Snow conditions: Not great.* The season started a bit late with no great dumps before the clock ticked over into 2024.

January
Snow conditions: Conditions were, for the most part, less than ideal.*

February
Snow conditions: Conditions continued to be, for the most part, less than ideal.*

March
Snow conditions: Insane first two weeks were insane. Like the weather gods had been fooling with us all along. Then it went to crap again.* That said when most resorts shut their lifts at the end of April bases were still mostly in excess of 200cm.

All in all, not the best season we’ve had. We had some decent dumps but too often they were followed by warm spells. Nonetheless we hoped everyone still had a good visit. Look forward to seeing you all back soon and hope you enjoyed the reports!

*Code for still much better than back home but not the usual endless days of expected Japow.

Myoko Snow Report
21st March 2024

Not a bad morning here. Up front, I was wrong with my prediction from yesterday. There’s been 37cm snowfall since yesterday below Akakan. Not sure about the resorts yet as they don’t usually post for another 30-90 minutes. Or, in the case of Ikenotaira Alpenblick, for a few days. 🙄

The snow should keep going all day before easing up tonight. So it should be good for another 20-30cm on top of what we already have. Going to be a great day on the slopes and I think a few places might be putting up their ‘closed’ shingle to sneak out for what will likely be the last decent dump of the season.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at !

As for the backcountry, just stay out of there today. Conditions should be better tomorrow. As always, check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ before heading out. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org.

Myoko Snow Report
20th March 2024

In a little known fact, Nostradamus once reported that the small Japanese village of Миоко, then unknown to the outside world, would receive an eclectic season of snow in the year MMXXIV.

And he was right! Take that disbelievers. And today proves that truth ongoing. We’ve had some weird days with warmth, high winds, sun and even some snow. It’s like Melbourne in Myoko. Overnight there was a dusting on some resorts and 10cm on both Suginohara and Madarao. As I write this at 9.30am there’s a bit of moving cloud and blue skies but there’s more high winds on the way after lunch. This could lead to some lift closures depending on how bad.

I worry when people post screenshots of Snow Forecast with comments like “Wednesday forecast for Nagano.....over 1m around the place!”. That IS NOT happening. Tomorrow and Friday (starting late today) ARE looking quite promising though. Temps will stay cold tomorrow and into Friday with a nice top up. How much? There’s a lot of varied forecasts between 10-40cm over the 48 hours or so. My gut feeling, and I could be proven wrong, is that it will be at the lower end - somewhere between 15-25cm. After that things get a bit nasty again as we lurch towards the closing weekends

Myoko Snow Report | Madarao Snow Report
15th March 2024

Gave myself a sabbatical for a couple of days from the earnest toil of snow reporting. Slathered myself in baby oil and lay on the deck to get a sun tan. It’s been that warm.

However the winds turned around late yesterday and the snows came back in overnight. It’s not going to be a huge amount, but enough to keep things fun. I imagine we’ll see somewhere between 10-15cm between now and early tomorrow morning. Although, given how March has gone this year, I would not be surprised if it ends up a bit more than that.

Temps will stay cold tomorrow and then we’ll get a further nice top up between Tuesday night and Friday morning. Thursday is looking quite promising ATM.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at ! Late season shout out to .Myoko and (whose 📸 we are featuring today) for their regular tags this season. 😁

Myoko Snow Report
13 March 2024

March is the time in Myoko where the locals finally start to get a bit of breathing space after a long slog of snow clearing times. Well, Mother Nature is being a bit cruel this year as we face yet another huge dump. One of my lodge contacts has reported 43cm!

I’m just waiting for all the resorts to update and they’re taking their sweet time. has reported 40cm+, 20cm at Arai and 30cm. So if you’re waxing up and still deciding, then those places are a decent bet today. I should hopefully have depths and temps up by around 9.30am JST at our web page listed below.

As for the next few days forecast, let me say, let’s just live in the moment for today...

As for conditions in the bc, as I said yesterday, the warmer temperatures are causing some instability, especially on the higher slopes - which have a HIGH avi risk as of this morning. Myoko Snow Report
12th March 2024

Was a beautiful bluebird day here yesterday. A cold night had kept the piste in good condition but it did get a bit claggy in the afternoon as the day warmed up.

Overnight it’s been quite warm although it looks like it’s still stayed below zero degrees on the mid to upper slopes. With no fresh snow yesterday and warmer temps conditions won’t be quite as nice - but good for some relaxed cruisey runs nonetheless.

Things will cool down tonight and we’ll be looking at another small dump going into Wednesday - maybe 15-20cm. SF is saying 40cm. I hope they're right and I'm wrong! After that it’s getting quite warm until at least Sunday.

Myoko Snow Report
9th March 2024

Once again, not a whole lot of snow yesterday until late in the afternoon when a change rolled in and we got some nice falls.

However, some conflicting news.

The charts I am looking at show the winds have turned around and the expected heavy dump is not now expected, at least up at the Myoko/Madarao end of the valley. But yesterday afternoon one of the local news outlets forecast heavy snow over the weekend.

Either way, there will still be a decent amount of snow between now and tomorrow night. My gut feeling (which has been pretty reliable 90% of this season), is that there will be maybe 15-20cm total up the top of the valley, whilst Arai, Charmant, Cupid Valley, and likely Seki Onsen, could get up to twice that amount. However, if the local paper is correct, we could be talking 60cm+ on the top of the alps. Will be interesting to see what numbers the resorts report this morning. Let’s say that, either way, the pistes will be in pretty good shape with a nice fresh top up.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at !

Myoko Snow Report
7th March 2024

We’ve had a pretty good few days and there’s still some light snow coming in this morning. Not a whole lot fell yesterday. The most was 10cm at Seki Onsen who have maintained a base of 280cm and temperature of -3° for several weeks now. Talk about consistency!

We’re into the last 2-3 weeks for some resorts already. You can find all the dates via . Conditions should be great out on the hill today. Most lifts will likely be operating today but Mitahara course is still closed at Suginohara.

It’s pretty much going to keep snowing on and off up until Sunday. Nothing exceptional but certainly enough to keep things interesting. Monday/Tuesday gets a little bit warm, nothing too drastic, before the northerlies should kick back in again on Wednesday.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at !

Conditions are easing in the back country but great care is still needed. Thanks to Casper and Beth for sending vision yesterday of small avis above the tunnel and in Arai. Myoko Snow Report
4th March 2024

It was a great day on the hill yesterday. We started with a bluebird day before some cloud cover came in later, and then last night, the snow started coming in again.

I haven’t seen the resort levels yet this morning but my gut feeling is that Arai, Charmant, Cupid Valley and likely Seki Onsen (where the snow was absolutely pounding down at 7pm last night) probably have done a bit better than resorts further up the valley. I'll be updating depths about 9.30am (JST) after all the resorts have updated (some can be tardy).

Most lifts will likely be operating but some courses are still closed at Suginohara..

It’s pretty much going to keep snowing on and off between here and Friday. Nothing like we saw on Friday but certainly enough to keep things interesting.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at !

Myoko Snow Report
29 February 2024

Going to jump right in on a sombre note this morning.

Yesterday we wrote “It's a bit dicey out in the backcountry and we recommend waiting a day or two before heading up there as a bit of extra snow will increase the chance of avalanches.”.

Sadly, yesterday one person lost their life in an avalanche on Mitahara, whilst another had to be rescued in the Highlands after suffering a badly broken femur.

Please consider everything very carefully before venturing out into the BC. 🙏 As conditions are still quite dangerous, it can literally be a life and death decision.

Moving on, anecdotally some good falls were reported by punters, whereas many of the resorts this morning reported 0cm. Overnight temps have remained pretty cold so the on-piste skiing will be good. It’s quite sunny with a little bit of high cloud, but there might even be some snow flurries around later in the day. Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Most lifts appear to be operating but some courses are still closed at Suginohara, plus Champion B course at Akakan will be closed due to a ski tournament happening.

As I said yesterday, it’s pretty much going to keep snowing on and off between here and Monday morning. Some forecasters are calling a snowmageddon on Saturday but I’m still not convinced TBH. I hope I’m wrong. I reckon we’ll get maybe 25-35cm between Friday and Saturday mornings though.

If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at !

Just stay out of the backcountry today. Always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first, be careful out there and make sure your insurance is valid. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org or hit up

It snowed hard all morning at Akakura Onsen, albeit wet and heavy, but then turned light and fluffy in the afternoon. Others in Madarao reported 30cm at least at the base and knee deep in the trees.

The snow has kept up overnight so will be interesting and there's been disparate snow recordings at the resorts. For example 10cm at Akakura but 30cm at Akakura Kanko. Whilst just below those resorts a friend recorded 48cm at their lodge! The further good news is that the snow forecast window has been extended out to early tomorrow morning. So we should get at least another 20cm or so by then. The winds are still heading in the right direction until tomorrow evening, so just need to keep getting enough moisture picked up over the Sea of Japan for some bonus freshies.

It's still a bit dicey out in the backcountry. A bit of extra snow will increase the chance of avalanches. Always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org.

Myoko Snow Reports run from the start of the first snow around mid-November and continue after until the last lifts close in early May (at Seki Onsen, Akakura Kanko and Lotte Arai).
