Last Myoko Snow Report
28 March 2025

With a number resorts getting close to packing it in for this season (a few from this weekend) this will be the last conditions/forecast report for 24/25. I'll wander back with a season wrap sometime early in April.

It's been warm here, like really warm - in the 20s. Down in Takada they hit 30 this week which apparently was the warmest spot in Japan at that time.Nonetheless temps have dropped quite quickly and we have quite heavy rain. So might see the last gasp of winter from later tonight with the rain turning into snow, off and on through till Sunday sometime. It won't be much, but at least it will be something.

The base is still great with fun runs on the corduroy in the money and crusty on the side, softening in the afternoon. Plenty of people taking the opportunity to get out into the BC. From here can't see too many decent falls before last lifts close in early May but, hey, stranger things have happened.

Also have some pics or video from this season that you’d like to share? We love receiving contributions, so make sure to tag/message or on your socials.

Please drop us a donation for this nonsense if so inclined at https://buymeacoffe.com/myoko/ From next season we're considering moving to a subscription model to help pay the rent my mother is insisting upon (capitalism sucks brothers and sisters) but we'll let you more about that during the off season.

You can also help us out by booking your accommodation for next season here - https://myoko.jp/stay/

Myoko Snow Report
20 March 2025

It was a couple of good days in the area with 20-30cm being added over the last couple of days.

Things are getting quite warm over the next week or so. Could even likely be hitting temps in the teens very soon. However, we’ve got possibly one last gasp of winter coming around 30 March and we’ll be watching that closely. We’ll maybe duck in with another report before then and later on a season wrap.

Just remember that, whilst a number of resorts close their lifts at the end of March or start of April, Akakan, Seki Onsen, Arai and Charmant all generally keep some lifts going until 'Golden Week' at the start of May. Given the depth we've got it shouldn't be a problem going all the way to that this season, plus the backcountry will be awesome!

Myoko Snow Report
10 March 2025

We're down now to weekly observations as we gallop towards the end of the season. This week looks like it's going to be warm, but the westerly winds will snake up again later as we get to the weekend, and a new front starts to intensify.

Around 15-16 March a valley of deep pressure will pass over the area. Unfortunately, as I forecast the other day, it looks like it's going to rain on Saturday and/or Sunday. Whether that's just around the base or higher up I'm not sure at this stage. However, we should see some decent falls around 17-18 March. And, fingers crossed, maybe one last gasp of winter around 20-21 March.

26 February 2025

Greetings all. I have finished up my Korea sojourn* but since that point I've been suffering from what I would term "writer's block". My therapist would more likely label it "ADHD", whilst friends (and I use that term lightly) would probably call it "apathy". But here I am, putting on my big boy pants and giving it a go.

Been through an incredible week or so of dumps but the last couple of days have been brilliant bluebird. Seki Onsen (6.1m) Arai (6.5m) and Charmant (6.8m) are all reporting base of over 6 metres! Cupid Valley has a base of 6.3m at their mid-station but they don't know at the top station because the measuring stick has been consumed!

The general local consensus however seems to be that the REALLY big falls are behind us for this season. Over the next few days it will generally be sun and cloud, maybe a spot of rain on Sunday and some light falls on Monday. The next cold front seems likely to move in around 6 March with 'moderate falls' and then another half decent front around mid-March. That might be the end but who knows in this crazy year?

*In case you are interested, the answer from the TV execs was "아니요"

Myoko Snow Report
16 Feb 2025

Starting today with a big shout out to old mate Shannon who gave me a serve last report (now blocked and deleted). He obviously mistook me for someone who cares. I bet he's fun at dinner parties. If you don't like my reports, don't read them, hey? It's very simple.

Moving on, the report will be off air for a few days whilst I take a mid-season break to Seoul (seriously). My German buddy Gerhard will possibly step into the breach if I can get him motivated enough to labor away at a keyboard for an hour in the morning rather than heading out for some first tracks freshies. I'm pitching a new series to Korean network execs to be based in Myoko Kogen. Basically, there will be a blue team driving 2WD cars without snow tires and a red team skiing down the road. Last person standing wins. Working title is "Squish Game".

And, finally, getting to that pesky actual actual snow report stuff, yesterday was a gobsmackingly gorgeous day here, as this video from Arai shows. It started today well too. There's a bit of high cloud coming over now, but visibility is still great. This trajectory will continue with snow starting to ease in tomorrow morning before getting more serious in the afternoon and on Tuesday. The JMA are providing warnings about severe road conditions, so be careful out there. Locals taking the opportunity to oil the snowblowers and clear roofs before then. Should continue through to Wednesday before slowing down on Thursday. After that snow will continue off and on until at least early next week.

Myoko Snow Report [*R]
14 February 2025

Happy "Claudius II didn't want young men to marry and have s*x so he banned it and then cut the head off some dude called Valentine when he kept performing marriages" Day! We've had some beautiful sunny weather, and we've had some absolutely extreme weather that closed quite a few lifts. This video was taken yesterday up in Togakushi (https://togakushivillage.com) by .sasaki. That's some kind of wild blow job* happening, hey?

Things are going to be reasonably warm between now and Monday morning. We might even see a few spots of rain. Then we get smashed again for a couple of days. I can see this pattern repeating now and I expect the warmer periods are going to start stretching out more as we head into Spring, which I think will be quite mild. Will be an excellent time for BC I think.

Speaking of which, before heading out, always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first, be careful out there and make sure your insurance is valid. Probably best to stay out of the BC from Mon PM to Wed AM. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org.

Myoko Snow Report
10 Feb 2025

It was a great day yesterday with regular light snow. Plenty of fresh to be found by the early risers.

Really weird front coming up on Wed/Thu. Rain is being predicted for much of Japan. On the morning of the 12th (Wednesday), a front is expected to move near the Korean Peninsula and become active as it passes through the Japanese archipelago. Warm and humid air will flow in from the south toward the front BUT it could also mean a lot of snow in mountainous areas above 1500m which, according to the map, includes Myoko Kogen. However, a small change of wind direction could make a big difference and, by default, make things VERY tricky in the BC. So I will watch this one carefully for the next couple of days. Always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first, be careful out there and make sure your insurance is valid. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org.

I just wanted to say a big arigato gozaimasu to Chris and Nicci who jumped in with substantial donations to my sake collection (https://buymeacoffee.com/myoko) yesterday. I will bear your children for you if needed. x

If you don't follow on Insta or FB, make sure to do so. There were some interesting observations made that would be good for people to pay attention to.

Myoko Snow Report
8 February 2025

Okay, just a really, really quick update. Some messages have gone kerthunk in my inbox regarding reports not being seen and also, quite nicely thank you very much, a couple of worried enquiries about my wellbeing. I am well indeed BUT, unfortunately like most residents in this fine borough, absolutely overwhelmed with snow clearing. Just check out the size of my driveway. Taking a huge chunk out of my already busy lifestyle (hey, those cat videos are not going to watch themselves) means I have had to temporarily suspend superfluous activities such as personal hygiene and snow reports.

Having endured a relatively quiet 36-48 hours, it looks like we are going to get smashed again for at least a couple of days. The snow is also playing havoc with transport. Went down for a quiet tipple with friends in Joetsu last night and the train wasn't coming back to pick me up. If you're coming or going from the area please make a Plan B or Plan C early. Also plan not to act like complete dicks such as the three North Americans I sadly encountered on the train yesterday, loudly swearing quite explicitly, swigging from a sake bottle and generally being an embarrassment to Western 'civilisation'.

recommends extra care in the BC due to instability. In fact, I'd just recommend sticking a fork in those plans for 2-3 days. Always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first, be careful out there and make sure your insurance is valid. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org.

I know I'm not providing the content you crave and desire but you can still hit me up at https://buymeacoffee.com/myoko. I'm happy to provide insights for supporters. For those others who message asking for personal forecasts? As the Aussies say, yeah nah, not gonna happen.

Myoko Snow Report
2 February 2025

It's been some very fun days on the slopes, pretty much whatever resort you've been at. A little bit of snow overnight to top up but not too much. Today will be cloudy and tomorrow there might even be a spot of rain around the base of some resorts. But from the 4th through 9th is going to be it's going to be pillow funbags time again. My perpetually optimistic local confidant is running with his regular 'possible catastrophe' and '100-200cm' lines as usual. Although, if talking over that 5 days day period, the latter is quite within the realms of possibility. He also said, and I quote, "...the weather will improve after the heavy snow around 2/10-11 and it might be the best day ever." No hyperbole there!

As always, be careful in the BC after the recent warm/snowy conditions. Always check conditions at https://nadare.jp/ first, be careful out there and make sure your insurance is valid. Local guides can be found and bookings made at https://myokokogen.org. And please stop pi***ng off the locals by going places you shouldn't be going. One incident recently led to a breaking of some onsen pipes from the source up on the mountain going down the hill. Which meant a couple of locals had to tramp out into deep snow to fix. Not happy Jan.

And, while I'm on a rant, if you have a 2WD and/or no snow tyres, please report immediately to MSR Global HQ so I can slap you around the head. Reports of some chaos from such ill prepared vehicles and/or maybe their over-confident drivers.

Now that I've brought you all into line and solved some first world problems, please hit me up at https://buymeacoffee.com/myoko
