has been in operation since 2006. That year, on Whidbey Island, Washington, a group of children dancers, the Young Scandia Dancers, were heading to Norway to display their dancing skills and learn more about the country whose dances they had learnt. The company was formed to offer this trip so that the talented dancers had an affordable and unique cultural heritage experience. Many adult volunteer

s commented on how much they had enjoyed the trip and would like another one the next year. This lead to adult tours being offered every summer. The company hopes to expand each year it's unique offerings to the Nordic countries.

Why Norway is the greatest place on Earth

The Huffington Post just published an article/photo series headlined "25 Reasons why Norway is the Greatest Place on Earth", stating that Norway is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places one can visit.

- It's home to more natural wonders than we can count and it has stunning cities, fascinating history and really happy people. Norway's not cheap. But it's worth it, the Post states.

It then goes on to present 25 top destinations, illustrated with photos. Among them:

Hornindalsvatnet - the deepest lake in Europe.

The Norwegian Fjords.

The Midnight Sun.

The Northern Lights.

Skiing in summer.

The Huffington Post also mentions the special Norwegian law called "allemannsrett":

- Allemannsrett literally translates to "all men's rights." It's a "freedom to roam" public rights law that allows the right of access to and passage through all uncultivated land. This means you can pitch a tent or hike through any land that is "utmark" (non-cultivated). Also, wild-berrying is permitted everywhere. This little rule is extra awesome because there tons of jaw-droppingly beautiful places to see in Norway and few barriers stopping you.

Now that winter is here with the snow mainly in the Trondelag area and northward, I am reminded of how we as Norwegians bring the colors of the outside indoors. Rosemaling was a way to bring in the warmth of the colors from the spring, summer and fall indoors during the white winter cold. I am not gifted in this are, but i know there are so many of you that are and what you create is breathtakingly beautiful. Please share with us what you are working on. Are any of you teaching classes in the new Year? Where do you get your supplies? Anyone done a touring of Norway just focused on Rosemaling?

The folk art, rosemaling – or flower painting – was popular in agrarian southern Norway during the 1700’s to the late 1800’s. Inspired by painted church interiors and influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles, local self-taught farmers decorated farmhouse interiors and functional items such as trunks, bowls, and cabinets.

The art displays many stylized flowers and scroll forms, combining blended colors and fine outlines on a plain background color. Traditional paint colors were derived from local raw materials, for example, rust red came from red iron oxide in the ground. Brushes were made of hairs from a squirrel’s tail or a cow’s ear.

Rosmaling artists often worked as farmers during the summer, subsidizing their living in the winter months painting rooms and furniture for more successful farmers, receiving little more than room and board for their compensation.

Originally, each isolated mountain valley developed unique stylistic traditions. The northern coastal areas of Norway being dependent on fishing did not have the time to develop a decorative art tradition. The Industrial Revolution made this art obsolete.

How did Rosemaling come to America?
Per Lysne, a Norwegian immigrant from Stoughton, Wisconsin rekindled an interest in Scandinavian folk art when his “Smørgaasbord” plates were sold in Chicago’s Marshall Fields department store in the late 1930’s. European folk art was rediscovered through home decorating magazine articles in the 1930’s and 1940’s.

The Vesterheim, Norwegian American Museum in Decorah, IA sponsored the first national rosemaling competition in 1967, bringing extensive awareness of the art’s direction and popularity. The competition continues to attract talented artists around the world.

Many say that Norwegians eat more chocolate than any other country in the world. I don’t know if that’s so, but we do eat a lot of chocolate. There are two chocolate companies in Norway. Freia is in Oslo and Nidar is in Trondheim. Our chocolate comes in long bars wrapped in colorful plastic wrappers.

The example for this week’s craft with trash is using these chocolate wrappers, but you could also use coffee bags or anything else that has a bit of weight to it. Even brown paper would work! Play. Experiment. That’s what making art is all about.

You can see the process of weaving strips together.
Instructions:
1. Find some chocolate.

2. Eat it.

3. Save the wrapper.

4. Cut the wrapper into strips. You can use either side when you weave. Divide the strips into two piles.

5. Lay one set of strips in rows, close together. Tape both the upper and lower ends to the table.

6. Weave, in and out, with the second set of strips.

7. Tape the other two sides to the table to keep the newly woven strips together, then carefully peel the newly woven piece off the table.

8. Fold under all four sides and tape.

9. FINISHED! Now you can use your newly woven candy fabric for a purse, a mat for a picture, a coffee coaster. Any other ideas? You can also laminate or cover the entire thing in contact paper if you wish.

Have fun!

Did you know that part of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was filmed close to the Oslo-Bergen railway? What is known as “Hoth” in Star Wars – the snow and ice planet, a long time ago in a galaxy far away – is actually the Finse area, circa March 1979. May the Force be with you on this fabulous and fun Friday!
