I can’t stop this feeling anymore….people with mental illness sure do have a lot of feelings - some good, but often bad. We allow these feelings to morph out of control. We come up with justifications, conclusions for why we’re feeling as we are. These feelings pile up onto each other making us feel more and more discouraged. We have to stop thinking so hard about what, where, when, why and how these feelings come into our mind. Instead, treat them as just another thing that we experience and don't allow it to take over all of us, don't ruminate. Let them hover, let them pass us by. One way to disengage from them is to refocus our attention on other parts of our experience such our senses - sights, sounds, touches, tastes, and smells. This is one way to manage negative thoughts and lighten your load. I'd like to thank Eriq Henri Madsen of our community for this great infographic. Talk about feelings on ForLikeMinds.com

The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding has been designated as the Tuesday of Mental Illness Awareness Week which is first full week in October of each year. Mental illness networks and faith leaders are urged to work together so that they may recognize and prepare for this day in a way that works best for each faith community.⁣

Su***de Prevention Awareness Month ends tomorrow, but we must create prevention awareness every second, every minute of each and every day, because 1 person completes su***de every 40 seconds around the world and 1 person completes su***de every 12.8 minutes in the U.S. and many, many, many more lives are touched by each and every person’s passing, each and every person's attempt. So don’t stop. Be aware, help save the lives of not only others, but maybe yours as well. Talk about Su***de Prevention on ForLikeMinds.com

Do you know the signs?

National Su***de Prevention Week – Su***de often takes people by surprise. It festers, it grows and builds. Those with a past history of suicidal behavioral, suffering from depression and worse, depression and anxiety (especially panic attacks) and addiction, a history of impulsive behavior are at higher risk. If you’re worried about a friend or loved one, don’t be afraid to ask “are you okay,” to say “I hope you’re okay – I’m here for you”, and if you’re really worried to ask “do you feel like harming yourself.” It has been shown that talking about su***de does not increase su***de risk. These are the many signs of possible suicidal risk. Please ask. Loved ones with loved ones experiencing suicidal behavior may connect with others like them on ForLikeMinds.com

This might come in handy for friends and family members. What you say and how you say it can mean the difference between amicable and confrontational exchanges as well intentioned as they may be. Take the time to ask to ask your loved one how you can do better. Those of us with mental illness should try not to always assume stigma, we should to give people the benefit of the doubt, a second chance. It is common for people who are driven to experience depression and suicidal ideation, particularly when they don’t feel they have achieved enough.
