Even if you don’t have a big expense coming up, signup bonuses for rewards travel credit cards can be a lot easier to reach than you might think. The card that we use again and again at hotels around the world only requires you to spend $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months to start earning points towards your first free night. In our household of four, groceries, gas, ours kids’ paid preschool, and other normal expenses easily get us there. It’s all about being strategic and moving your normal household spend to a single card to strategically earn yourself valuable points that you can exchange for free hotel stays. ✨
Welcome to points and miles (rewards travel) for beginners—the series where I give you the exact strategy I started using 2 years ago to start taking free vacations a few times a year with my family. Follow me @marionthemap to learn more 💫

Your first @ is who you should take this drive with 👯♀️👯
This is Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, and it’s another on our must-see list in Oahu. 🏝️ Ho’omaluhia means “to make a place of peace and tranquility,” and wow, is this place relaxing. It was the perfect drive-through (yes, you can drive, bike, hike, or walk through the grounds) after a busy morning.
Along the paved driving path, there were multiple opportunities to park and get out and explore individual hikes, each featuring plantings from major tropical regions around the world grouped geographically, including: Philippines, Malaysia, Tropical America, India & Sri Lanka, Melanesia, Hawaii, Polynesia, and Africa. 🌺
As you move through these lush 400 acres, you will truly agree that Hoʻomaluhia is rightfully named “a peaceful refuge.” We observed picnics, birthday parties, live jam sessions, and lots of sitting and relaxing to enjoy the view. So grab some local food and get ready for an afternoon of relaxing in paradise 🌴

Did you know that most libraries in the United States allow you to check out passes to local museums and attractions for free? We took advantage of the free membership pass to @elmwoodparkzoo from our local Upper Merion Township Library @umtlibrary last week. Not only did we get to attend the zoo for free, but the membership pass also gave us discounts at the gift shop, on experiences like feeding the giraffes, and on food. Our library allowed us to check the pass out for three days, and reserve it for 24 hours before pick up. 🙌
To find out what attraction passes your local library offers, search “museum and attraction library program” plus your ZIP Code. Scroll through the options, then give the library a call to reserve the pass. You need a free library card in order to take advantage of this program, so head into your local library with your state ID containing your home address if you don’t already have one. Let me know in the comments where you’re going to use this free library benefit. Happy exploring!

🐴 We had such a fun time at children’s day at the Country Fair at the Devon Horse show this weekend!
🎡 The Country Fair raises money for Bryn Mawr Hospital, while providing the community with fun-filled family activities. Our kids and their cousins especially loved the carnival rides and games and watching the horses in the warmup ring.
🎶 If you missed this year’s event, no worries! The Devon Fall Classic is coming up in September and offers four days of live music, food, shopping, rides, and games for the entire family. Follow @devon1896 to stay up to date on upcoming events.

If I only had time to do one thing in Oahu, I think it would have to be @waimeavalleyoahu. Where else can you get Hawaiian history and culture, stunning natural beauty, and adventure all in one spot? And it’s kid- + stroller-friendly. Let’s dive in.
We started our tour of Waimea Valley on the paved walking trail that takes you to the botanical gardens and hiking trails. On the walk, you’ll pass educational and cultural demonstrations, where you can learn about traditional Hawaiian practices such as hula dance and lei making.
The botanical gardens are home native Hawaiian plants, like palms, ferns, orchids, and gingers. Try to spot the ulu or breadfruit plant, which was brought to Hawaii by Polynesian voyagers and became a staple food source for the indigenous Hawaiian people.
Your walk ends at the incredible Waimea Falls, where you can take a dip if you’re feeling adventurous. The site provides lifejackets, and we recommend wearing waterproof shoes and taking your time to avoid hitting any rocks in the pool. Whether you decide to swim or not, the falls are a stunning natural oasis in the middle of the valley.
On the walk back, you can learn about Waimea Valley’s conservation efforts to preserve the unique ecosystem of the area and protect endangered species of plants and animals.
To get there, a car is your best bet, but some guided tour companies also offer transportation. Don’t forget to pack: comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, snacks, and water, and a bathing suit, waterproof shoes, and towels for the swim in the falls.
For all visitors, remember that Waimea Valley was once a residence for Hawaiian chiefs and has numerous archaeological sites, including ancient temples, so be sure to respect the land and help our Hawaiian friends preserve their culture.

Don’t sleep on Albuquerque. Who knew this city was such a gem? 💎
Last fall, I visited #ABQ with two friends to celebrate a milestone birthday, and this city did not disappoint! We did it all, and then some, and let me tell you that #albuquerquenewmexico literally has something for everyone.
If you want to…
✅ Relax - Check out the spa at @isletaresortandcasino. We did the day pass after our flights arrived, with access to all of the amenities including the impressive jar spa hot tub. Spa immediately after a flight is definitely the forever plan now
✅ Get outdoors - We loved our trail ride with @thestablesattamaya. We got so lucky and saw a herd of elk cross our path—very National Geographic
✅ Take in those mountain views - A hot air balloon ride with @rainbowryders is a must. If you’re afraid of heights, but still want the views, book a meal at LEVEL 5 at @hotelchaco
✅ Shop - Old Town has everything from souvenirs to authentic Native American crafts to local artisan goods to luxury jewelry. I took home a Christmas ornament and dream catchers for the boys, and my bestie bought a gorgeous Native American turquoise cuff for her mom
✅ Get your brunch on - @damacios_abq has the best DJ brunch every weekend. We caught the 90’s brunch, and the tunes, food, and drinks did not disappoint
Would you visit Albuquerque? ⛰️

🌋 Diamond Head Crater—one of Hawaii’s most recognized landmarks—is known for its historic hiking trail and stunning coastal views. We took our 3 and 5 year olds on the hike to the summit and down, and here’s how it went…
😍 Overall, my 5 year old and I both loved this hike! The views are spectacular, and we really enjoyed the varying terrain and the challenge of it. My husband, who is afraid of heights, was not as fond of it, and our 3 year old wasn’t able to make the hike without being carried for a large portion of it.
🥾 For gear, all 4 of us wore hiking boots that we had used before on other trails. While we did see some people hiking in flip flops, sandals, and other types of non-athletic shoes, I don’t recommend it for this hike. The terrain varies greatly, and a twisted ankle can definitely ruin your vacation. The total time for our family, who is used to hiking, was about 1.5 hours round trip.
🪨 About that terrain… The trail to the summit was built in 1908 as part of Oahu’s coastal defense system, so it’s definitely not as smooth as some dirt hikes you may be used to. There are bumpy concrete walkways, lots of switchbacks, dark tunnels, and steep staircases. The safety rails are also for adult height, so you need to keep a close eye on any child that’s a flight risk. 😆
👍 All in all, we all agreed that it was worth it, and I would absolutely do it again! But I’d hold off on this one with very little kids, anyone too wobbly on their feet, or anyone who isn’t fond of heights. What do you think—would your family enjoy this hike?
