In her book "Women Who Run with the Wolves," Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes suggests that we all need to periodically go cheerfully and enthusiastically out of our minds. Make sure, she says, that at least one part of you always remains untamed, uncategorizable, and unsubjugated by routine. Be adamant in your determination to stay intimately connected to all that's inexplicable and mysterious about your life.

At the same time, though, Estés believes you need to keep your unusual urges clear and ordered. Discipline your wildness, in other words, and don't let it degenerate into careless disorder.

Have you ever considered utilizing an intuitive guide for your business/career? (See end of article for details on the January special). I know it may sound kooky, but a professional intuitive guide can be a great asset if you open your heart wide to the possibility. Nineteen years ago, a very skeptical me utilized a skilled intuitive guide when I was at a major crossroads. At the time I was the Comptroller for a CRO (Clinical Research Organization) and realized that I had grown to hate my job and accounting in general, but was unsure what I wanted to do next. All I knew was that I had a desire to help and serve others, I wanted the freedom and flexibility of a one-woman business, and that I was interested in the alternative health field. My fabulous professional guide helped me strengthen my connection to my authentic self, hone in on my vocational calling, define the action steps needed to succeed in a new career, and held my hand through the scariest stages of cashing in my 401(k) to start my business. Although self-employment has definitely provided its own challenges over the years, I continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude on a daily basis that I am on a completely different path that I love nearly twenty years later.

Perhaps you are wondering about the viability of starting a new business and/or career? There are thousands of intuitives out there. Some prefer the term psychic, others prefer medium, clairvoyant, or guide. Some prefer to work alone and others prefer to work with a group or as an employee of a psychic-services company. Professional guides will never make decisions for you, but instead present choices with the most likely outcomes. As with any business, some have better practices and intentions than others, so shop around and find the right guide for you. A 1-2 hour session is typical for an initial session, with fees of $80-$170/hour. If you had a negative experience with an intuitive guide in the past, try someone new just as you would with a family physician, personal trainer, massage therapist, etc. And if your only experience was with someone who talked with you for 15 minutes and charged $20, all I can say is: as with most things, you get what you pay for. Feel free to ask your potential intuitive guide for testimonials; some will even offer contact info of current/former clients (with said clients’ permission of course).

Ravens are tricksters in the Native American tradition, teaching us both the right way to live through example of what NOT to do as well as bringing many blessings. When you see a Raven, say, “No tricks today, brother/sister Raven – only fruit!” This means you are asking Raven to bring abundance and blessings, as opposed to having you learn things the hard way via the cosmic 2×4 upside the head! If you see a Raven carrying food in its mouth, know this is a positive omen meaning all your needs will be provided for.

In the Pacific Northwest tribes, Raven is known as “the bringer of Light”, a long-distance healer, a master of the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth, and a symbol of the unknown. Numerous stories are told about Raven and his/her adventures and achievements. One of the most common is how Raven stole the light in the form of the moon, sun, and stars. Many versions of this story speak of how Raven transformed into a baby in order to find out where the light was hidden. Raven found it in a large wooden box in the home of an old chief. After escaping through the smoke-hole of the house with the box, Raven placed the moon, sun, and stars in the sky for All My Relations to enjoy. Raven originally had feathers of white, but after flying through the smoke hole with the light his feathers turned black and remained that color.

People who carry Raven medicine carry a heavy responsibility to Spirit. They come into this Earth plane in order to help others break through old paradigms and belief systems into a new expanded awareness of reality. Raven people must confront their own demons in order to allow greater light into themselves. Once they are well on this path of bringing light into our shadows, they usually find themselves being asked to aid those who are in need of their assistance in a variety of ways.

Raven people oftentimes feel their lives are not their own, but instead belong to a greater cause, a higher purpose. Despite not necessarily understanding fully where they are being led, they know they have a special destiny to fulfill. Sometimes this destiny fills them with a sense of loneliness, perhaps even sadness. They know they walk alone, like those with Wolf as totem. This does not mean they don’t have family or friends. It means they are called to be rebels, tricksters, fools, pioneers: to go forth and do that which most others would call crazy or foolish, in order that Earth and all her inhabitants (All My Relations) can continue to expand and evolve into ever high levels of consciousness. And it means they must do this no matter what the consequences!

Raven also carries the medicine of shapeshifting, mysticism, and clairvoyance. A shapeshifter is simply one that knows this Earth “reality” is an illusion. Raven carries messages from Spirit to those who are willing to hear AND follow through on what they are shown. This is why so many Raven people often feel isolated and alone: they know at any moment Spirit may call upon them to leave absolutely everything behind in order to work for the good of the whole.

Raven brings the ability to transcend space and time: in the blink of an eye, he/she can appear in any form that is appropriate to bring help and healing to another. Neptune and/or Pluto often figure prominently in the charts of people with Raven as totem. The Neptune influence means they feel very intensely what others are truly thinking and feeling; the Plutonian influence means they see plainly what most others would prefer to ignore.

Raven people often have powerful, life altering visions at key points in their lives. Those who find themselves at a crossroads and/or seeking a new direction for their lives would be wise to call upon Raven for assistance choosing the highest and best path. This is not to say that the truest path will always be easy, for Raven is often utilized via Spirit to help correct something and bring it back into balance. Raven teaches us how to journey into the void where all possibility resides, for he/she innately knows how to carry us there; but most importantly, Raven shows us the proper path to return safely to our “reality” in order that we may share and manifest what we found in the void. This practice of entering the void and subsequently returning to “reality” brings ever-increasing awareness of how to best deal with the shadows in our lives, as well as the shadow reflected in others.

I remain forever grateful for Raven’s presence in my life, and look forward to continuing to share his/her teachings with All My Relations. As Raven (and John Lennon) say, “May We All Shine On”!
