DUGONG ID PROGRAM: Thanks to Kendra Miluu Leidich’s art skills and the telephoto lenses on modern quad copters, we are now able to identify dugongs individually. Each individual dugong has permanent skars, scratches, and nicks on their fins and flukes. We can now assess the stability of each herd, the range of males & females, and their seasonal migrations. Ultimately, this data will assist policy makers in deciding which habitats are most in need of protection.

Located within the heart of Nikko Bay, Ngerchelngael falls under the protection of Koror State's Rock Island Southern Lagoon. Despite Koror State laws prohibiting development within the RISL and the blanket protection of UNESCO, excavation of the site has begun. Palau's Environmental Quality Patrol Board has issued a permit which allows for a geo-technical survey of the landscape. Fresh water streams are now emitting sediment onto the reefs of Omedes without a single silt barrier. Ultimately The Four Seasons Resort chain wants to convert this site into a hotel, which will eliminate public access to the rich natural heritage of the area. Please voice your concerns to the EQPB, Koror State Government, and the Office of the President.

One of Paddling Palau’s guides, Mac Sasao, has just returned from an epic voyage aboard a luxury private superyacht cruising through Melanesia! He was part of a team of experienced naturalists, veteran guides, skilled zodiac drivers, cultural experts, and excellent leaders—this team was composed of adept professionals. The cruise island-hopped between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

During his travels, Mac made connections between his home and these novel islands. Although the distance from Micronesia to Melanesia is significant, Mac felt a sense of familiarity as he listened to the songs, spoken words, and dance performances. When exploring the flora and fauna of these islands, he discovered many species that were similar, or even the same, as those found in his home of Palau.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience for our guide! He had the opportunity to work and learn alongside accomplished professionals, while also meeting distant brothers and sisters from other islands.

Palauan Coral Defenders: Crown of Thorns Starfish are presently consuming countless acres of Palau’s otherwise pristine reefs. Their population numbers explode when heavy nutrient loading from human sources enter the ocean ecosystem.

Fortunately, young Palauan conservationists like Calvin Idek Leidich and Kai Yars Kiefer have taken a stance. On August 7th, the experienced free divers removed 117 starfish from Leather Coral Arch and Triton’s Reef. With constant vigilance, these reefs can maintain their high biodiversity and physical beauty.
