The Palau Giant Gecko (Gehyra sp) is a freakishly large nocturnal lizard which feeds on insects and reptiles. By day they like to hide in the axils of palm leaves emerging at night to terrorize their prey. Locally known as Malaitemudes, they are most unpopular with Palauan women and home owners despite keeping the homes free of cockroaches and spiders. 🦎🌴🫶🏽

Immersed in the moment: During my first week working at Rock Island Kayaking Expedition, I had the opportunity to sail on “Miluu’s pride” canoe alongside my fellow intern, Carmin Blesam, and two of Micronesians’ best sailors, Clyde, and Bj. As I sat on the canoe, I felt a sense of tranquility from the warmth of the sun and the beauty of the vast ocean. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and it was most definitely one for the books. -KIRANG ISAAC

As this opportunity opened to us, we saw our ancestors’ perspective of the ocean from the canoe. From how it works to what it was made of, it felt more special knowing that it was made by our people. -LISA RULUKED

Feeling blessed is all I could feel being out on the moana canoe, a moment where I breathe in a sense of belonging and exhale a sense of clarity.
-NGIRUR BLESAM

The moment I stepped on the canoe, a strong wave of heat from the sun hit my face and the strong gust of wind almost blew me into the water. As I sat down and held the rope to control the sail, it felt like as if I was on a quest to go somewhere beyond the horizon. When I switched to go to the back of the canoe and held the paddle in my hands and felt splashes of water hit my skin, it was like reclaiming a piece of my ancestral soul. -ZACK BLESAM

The euphoric moment I felt during this photoshoot was overwhelming, having the opportunity to be a rookie photographer in addition to shooting the moana canoe increased my excitement and confidence towards future memorable experiences. -KAI ISKAWA

P**p Eaters: The Shark Suckers which follow the dugongs will not only remove ecto-parasites from their host, but they’ll also consume their nutritious p**p! This form of feasting is known as coprophagy. The chlorophyl in the sea grass is carried through the f***s and will ultimately turn the skin of the shark suckers green.

DUGONG ID PROGRAM: Thanks to Kendra Miluu Leidich’s art skills and the telephoto lenses on modern quad copters, we are now able to identify dugongs individually. Each individual dugong has permanent skars, scratches, and nicks on their fins and flukes. We can now assess the stability of each herd, the range of males & females, and their seasonal migrations. Ultimately, this data will assist policy makers in deciding which habitats are most in need of protection.
