On Waitangi Day we remember, as we do every day, the 18,000 New Zealand service personnel who died in the First World War and almost 12,000 from the Second World War.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial in Belgium commemorates over 800 New Zealand soldiers who died in or near Messines in 1917 and 1918 who have no known grave.

Each year on 11 November, Remembrance Day, we mark the date in 1918 when the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. It was the end of the First World War.

From these beginnings, this day has now become a day to remember those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice in all wars, peacekeeping operations and armed conflicts.

This year Victorians can gather in person again at services at the Shrine of Remembrance and across the state. This year the Shrine of Remembrance will do things a little differently, starting proceedings with an Aboriginal smoking ceremony for the first time, and marking 21 years of service in the 21st century.

If you can’t attend in person, the Shrine will be livestreaming the service via their Facebook and YouTube channels:

You can also mark Remembrance Day by pausing for a minute’s silence at 11.00am, wherever you are.

On this day 100 years ago the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was formed.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates more than 11,000 Second World War RAAF service personnel around the world. All those with grave markers display the RAAF badge – with the design being held in the CWGC archive.
