🎁 TRAVEL THE WORLD FOR FREE 🎁
I used to wonder how backpackers were able to travel for so long? I asked myself how much did they save? And assumed they had remote jobs or loads of savings.
The truth was, the secret to travelling the world for free is by volunteering in hostels!
I’m Alex, I’ve been a backpacker for over 7+ years. It started with a 1month sabbatical. Then 2-4 weeks here and there until I finally quit my 9-5. Throughout that time I looked for ways to travel longer and cheaper.
I discovered thousands of backpackers were trading their skills for free stays in hostels. They would help run activities. Spend time with guests and make sure they are having a great time during the day. And using their evenings to explore and party. Pretty special right?
I had to get involved and created a brand called Laulima Travels. It helps backpackers travel for longer by finding them volunteer exchanges in hostels.
If you go to laulimatravels.com you’ll find hostels around the world that are looking for volunteers to help with things like running activities, party repping, and social media. In exchange, you’ll get free stays which will help you save money. The best thing is, you’ll make so many new friends and actually get to experience a place for longer and like a local.
If you’ve just graduated, taking a gap year. Or just left your job and looking for a new challenge and up for a unique travel experience, I’d recommend doing a volunteer exchange with one of our hostel partners.
Head over to the link in our bio and see what volunteering opportunities there are available in a country you’d like to travel.
Give it a go and let me know how it goes.

Reintroducing Laulima Travels. Laulima means many hands working together. In this light, I created a company that helps backpackers find volunteer exchanges in hostels around the world so they can trade their skills for free stays.
This will help you travel for less, it’s a cultural exchange where you get to learn new skills, work and live with locals, meet backpackers from all over the world and create lifelong memories together. That’s it.
It's a company for backpackers created by me, a fellow backpacker for 5+ years. And I have so many new things planned that’ll help you travel longer and cheaper.

After volunteering for a month in the mountains I’m pretty glad to be moving on. From Kandy we head back to Colombo for a night before flying over to Kuala Lumpur. We treated ourselves to a fancy hotel and just chilled for the rest of the day. We managed to catch this beautiful sunset to end our time in Sri Lanka.
The next day we made our way to KL. At this point, tiredness started to kick in. The good thing is we know KL pretty well and have done a lot of the touristy things. So we just used the time to walk around the city, see what’s changed and take it easy ready to go hostel hunting again.

This is my daily routine as a volunteer. I get up at 7am, either get some Laulima work done, join the morning yoga session or do a bit of filming around the grounds. At 9am we catch up with guests over breakfast and organise their activities for the day. Between 10am to 4pm, we either join the activity or do our own thing. Which in my case, is to do more work, which I don’t mind, as it has perfect remote working conditions.
At 5.30pm I film and join Kelsey’s sunset yoga class before heading back for a lovely dinner and catch up. And just before bed, we work between 9pm to 11pm. And that’s it. I hope this gives you an insight into how exchanges are.
Even with our remote work, it’s nothing difficult, especially if you’ve agreed to volunteer in something you enjoy and are used to doing. My only bit of advice is to volunteer for the experience over the free stay, you’ll get so much more out of it. Let the free stuff be the bonus that helps you travel for less.

Volunteering at a Yoga Retreat in Sri Lanka
We volunteered in a yoga retreat for 1 month and this is why. Kelsey’s a yoga teacher and wanted to build her experience. She found an exchange online with a retreat in Sri Lanka. The deal was Kelsey teaches yoga and I help with social media and business growth in exchange for free stay, food and activities. Pretty standard volunteer set-up.
Whilst we were there, I thought why not show you what volunteering is like. It’s not a hostel, but the system’s exactly the same. Even the responsibilities and tasks are similar. So here’s how it went.
Let’s start with a tour of the grounds because it’s a beautiful place. Here’s the estate itself where we spend most of our time and where the kitchen, living, dining and our room is. Then you have this veranda bit where everyone gets together to eat and chill.
There’s a pool area 3 yoga shalas and an art room. This area’s my favourite because of the views.

Today we leave Colombo for Kandy and take the local train. I’ve done these trains in third class before but we’ll travel second class this time. Getting tickets is straightforward, I booked on 12go.asia and printed them at Colombo Fort Station.
The seats were decent but we were going backwards. Just to show you how quickly things can change, the train decided to stop 45mins before Kandy with no explanation. We got kicked off and told to take a local bus.
I really couldn’t be bothered to fight for the bus so we ended up sharing a tuk-tuk with an Australian guy to Kandy town centre. After that, it was another 2hrs to our next base.
I’m sure you’re wondering why we’re staying so far out from town. I’ll share everything in the next video but here’s us getting to the property.

Another two hostels this morning. So Colombo has different zones like London. It actually reminds me of the Stations in Boracay, too.
Island Hostels Mount Lavinia is the first. We found it but was completely shut. I’m still able to book a stay there so I’m guessing they literally just open it when they receive bookings in low season. Another fail!
Okay the next is Colombo Beach Hostel. I have high hopes. Good news is it’s open and we see a few backpacks. The owner was not in of course but we met the chef called Rodney. He was so nice and gave us a tour of the hostel and spoke to us about their plans of expansion. He couldn’t make any decisions so we got the contact of the owner.
And that’s done for hostel visits in Colombo. All in all, not a great success but nothing we haven’t experienced before. What I’ll do is reach out again to all the contacts I gathered and hope to get a response.
We spend the rest of the day walking around, chilling by the pool and resetting for the next part of our travels.

Finding hostels to speak to in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I select a bunch of hostels to visit in each city we’re in and physically go to speak with them.
My aim is to meet all my hostel partners. If there’s any hostel owners out there who want to connect hit me up.

Just one week ago we left london for a 7 month trip to Asia. No it’s not a travel trip. It’s all business with travel thrown in. For any new followers, I’m build my dream of creating one brand for everything backpacking. And I’m travelling to as many hostels as I can to tell them about it.
So anyway. From london we had three flights, two stopovers. Yeah, not fun at all! We didn’t really care until we got hit with a £100 transit fee in Saudi Arabia for a 2 hour layover. F**king piss take!
Nonetheless, we touched down in Colombo Sri Lanka. And made our way to a pretty fancy hotel for a few days. A massive treat, as we’re always on a tight budget. But I’m not complaining. Check out this view. For me, the biggest benefit of working remotely is having a view like this as your backdrop.
I spend half a day researching hostels in Colombo to speak to, plot them on my map, ready for a full day of hostel visits and pitches the next day.

Why I created the world’s first platform to help backpackers find volunteer exchanges in hostels around the world. 45million people go travelling every year! 80% of backpackers say they want to continue travelling if it wasn’t for the money. I was felt the same.
I found hostel volunteer exchanges was exactly what I was looking for. But I couldn’t find a company that solely worked with hostel. Yes ONLY worked with hostels. So I built my own focussing on 5 things:
1: a platform that only worked with hostels
2: a company that looked after the volunteers
3: a brand that was dedicated to helping backpackers travel for less
4: a funding free business driven by a sharing economy
5: the biggest community for backpackers
If you’re new here, this is my story for creating Laulima. Stay tuned for part 2 to see how I’ve been building it in the past year.
