Just as the great American road trip has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, train travel is finally getting the attention and adoration it deserves. Here, the journey itself is a draw. Rail travel in the US isn’t exactly bullet speed as in Asia, but the point of choosing to journey by train is exactly the opposite. Sure, you'll end up in spectacular destinations like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, but the true highlights are the the towns and parks you'll (slowly) chug through along the way. Not to mention, it's eco-friendly.

All aboard!

"With vastly fewer late-night shifts at fewer manufacturing plants across the industrial Midwest, many once-busy early-morning bar owners face the same predicament. Places like the Temple Bar and the Bronx Bar in Detroit, as well as Kelly’s and New Dodge Lounge in nearby Hamtramck, have long since shifted their hours to late afternoons. The third-shift bar might be a dying breed, but the ones holding on provide a valuable service to many late-night workers, including first responders and healthcare workers..."

Designed to serve late-night factory workers, the city’s early-morning bars may be in steady decline, but the ones that remain are vital.

A GREAT article about the history of baseball in New York City: "The Giants decided they had a problem on their hands. With Sunday baseball newly legal in New York, they begrudged handing over half of their Sabbath dates — always the biggest attendance days, especially before night baseball — to their tenants. Before the Babe was two months into his first season in New York, the Giants canceled their lease. After the 1920 season, the Yankees would have to go — preferably out of town..."

"While we rely on food to sustain us physically, we also depend on it for its comforting properties — sometimes a dish just knows how to convey so much more than words ever could. From fried fish and chips in the UK to the lasagna-like moussaka in Greece, certain dishes just make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside."

From French onion soup to a hearty helping of chilaquiles in Mexico, here are feel-good foods from around the world.

Commercial moon lander continues journey to the moon, will attempt landing February 22.

A pioneering moon lander has beamed home its first photos from the final frontier. Intuitive Machines' robotic Odysseus spacecraft snapped a few selfies with Earth in the background shortly after its Feb. 15 launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket — and we can all check them out.

"Intuitive Machines successfully transmitted its first IM-1 mission images to Earth on February 16, 2024. The images were captured shortly after separation from 's second stage on Intuitive Machines' first journey to the moon under 's CLPS initiative," the Houston-based company wrote Saturday (Feb. 17) in a post on X that shared four of the photos.

The robotic lander also recently aced a crucial engine checkout.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, one early definition of “shiver” is “to break or split into small fragments or splinters.” And “timber” is “wood used for the building of houses, ships, etc.” In the context of ships specifically, the “timbers” were the wooden support frames of the vessel. When the phrase is put together, “shiver me timbers” suggests a ship breaking into pieces, perhaps due to the force of a strong wave or a cannonball. But aside from the dictionary definition, the expression has several less literal interpretations.

"Shiver me timbers" may have been used as an expression of shock or surprise.

"There are old buildings, and then there’s the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan. When guests step into this ornate hotel near Mount Fuji in Japan, they’re continuing a tradition that dates back to 705 CE—making the Keiunkan the oldest continuously operated hotel in history.

Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, the inn’s main attraction is its hot springs, which are said to have run without interruption since the business opened 1300 years ago. For 52,000 yen (about $355), guests can enjoy a mountain view and bathing privileges in the springs. There are both indoor and outdoor baths available, and guests are welcome to drink from the springs. (Though you’ll want to avoid sipping the bathwater.)"

Want a real feeling for history? Go to Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan, a hotel that’s played host to shoguns and emperors.

He then added a second shop, Ghostlight Midtown on Patterson in 2019. In 2021 Ghostlight Centerville Coffee Bar & Bagel Shop opened inside Dot’s Market. May of 2022 brought on Dough, located in the 2nd Street Market. In June of 2023 he opened a new production facility in the former space of Belmont Bakery. With the International Space Station (ISS) scheduled to retire in 2030, NASA is placing a huge emphasis on a seamless shift to future private space stations in low-Earth orbit. Many details of that transition are still being worked out, agency officials say.

"The reason this is so important is because we do believe that the impact of a gap will be disruptive," said ISS director, Robyn Gatens, during a panel discussion at the International Space Station Research and Development Conference earlier this month.

A few key players who could be impacted by that "gap" include scientists looking to send research experiments to space as well as crew and cargo transportation providers. Given NASA's expected two-year transition period, a commercial successor must be operating by 2028 to prevent any such complications.

Microgravity research and technology development on the ISS will continue "full throttle" through the end of 2030, the agency says.

Those larger-than-life sculptures, art cars, installations and temples that remain as “Burners” pack up the makeshift city can present a pressing logistical issue for their creators. "No, it did not involve dropping an atomic bomb. Christopher Nolan piqued audiences' interest in his twelfth feature film, Oppenheimer, when he told Total Film that he had achieved the effect of detonating an atomic bomb without the use of CGI. This led to many fans jokingly saying that the British auteur with his eye on realism had somehow convinced Universal Pictures, the studio he worked with on Oppenheimer rather than Warner Bros., to purchase and blow up a real nuclear device in the middle of the desert to replicate the Trinity Test, the world's first atomic bomb explosion..."

How did Oppenheimer pull off the Atom bomb without CGI? ScreenCraft takes a deep dive into the creative mind of Christopher Nolan.
