Travel Mauritius A record of our visits to the beautiful island of Mauritius - and maybe some Ideas for TTD. It is very steep sided and has many caves and overhangs.

TRAVEL MAURITIUS
About Mauritius
Mauritius, a tropical island paradise is arguably one of the world's top luxury tourism destinations. You’ll find a wide range of
attractions, natural and man-made, and enjoy a tropical climate with clear warm sea waters, attractive beaches and a multi-
ethnic and cultural population that is both friendly and welcoming. Hotels in Mauritius
Although the only hotel

we’ve stayed in is The paradise Cove Boutique, the range of hotels are extensive. Check out any
popular travel operator and you will find something for your taste and not only dependent on price. There are some amazing
deals if you’re prepared to do a bit of research. You will find a wealth of natural beauty and activities to suit every traveller. They range from the natural features of the Black
river Gorges, the 7 colours of the Earth at Chamerel along with its impressive falls and 2 UNESCO world
heritage sites. The list of tourist, historical and places of unique beauty is far more than I can advise you of at this time. There
are many guide books available that will help you discover the beauty that is Mauritius. UNESCO World Heritage Sites
La Mourne Brabant is a peninsula in the south west of the island. It’s more than 1800 ft above sea level and is a huge
basalt monolith. La Mourne and the lagoon at its base has become
a well known tourist attraction. La Boucle d'Oreille (Creole for ear ring I think) is the national flower of Mauritius and can
be found here alone. The peninsula was used by runaway slaves in the 18th and early 19th century, protected by the wooded
areas and steep cliffs. There, they formed small settlements in the numerous caves and the 30 or so acres on the summit. With
the abolition of slavery in 1835, a party of officials accompanied by local police were despatched to advise the ‘maroons’ of
their freedom. Thinking it was a ruse to capture them, they jumped to their deaths rather than return to a life of slavery. This
day, the 1st of February has been the date Mauritians have celebrated as the Annual Commemoration of the Abolition of
Slavery. The second site is Aapravasi Ghat, Here you will find the remains of the immigration depot the saw 500,000 indentured
labourers flooding in to be transported to areas within the British Empire between 1849 and 1923. Aapravasi Ghat has become
an important reference point for Mauritians, important to their cultural history. Aapravasi Ghat was declared a World Heritage
sir by UNESCO in 2006, and is a present being restored to how it looked in 1860. Finally, I must end with a quote from Mark Twain. “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and
Heaven was copied after Mauritius”
