were delighted to host John Carrig of the last night. John gave an insightful talk on the conservation of the Barn Owl to a large attendance. This voluntary ran project has done tremendous work in rescuing, educating and advising the public on the Barn Owl. Here in our Parish,of Lorrha and Dorrha we have a population of Barn Owls which looks good for its future.

Thanks to James Heenan for organising this talk.

We are lucky to see the Barn Owl population increase in this area of North Tipperary but there are further measures to enhance and protect this population. Many difficulties include the use of pesticides; habitat destruction; road casualties; and proper nesting sites.

The Barn Owl Project was set up in January 2019 to help with conservation of Barn Owls in Ireland. The founder of the project, John Carrig, is a published wildlife photographer and has been involved in wildlife conservation and rescue for many years. John now holds the position of Director of The Barn Owl Project.

Abstract: This talk is part of the 800 year celebration of the Dominican Order in Ireland. Portumna Priory initially started as a Cistercian Abbey in the 13th century, later utilized by the Dominicans in the 15th century and received priory status in the 17th century. Christy will discuss the various stages of its development with reference to archaeology, architecture and history.

Bio: Christy Cunniffe recently retired from his role as community archaeologist with the Heritage Office of Galway County Council. His main areas of interest are in the topics of medieval church archaeology, landscape archaeology and community archaeology.
He is the voluntary museum curator at the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna and is a regular contributor to seminars and conferences.
He is completing a survey of medieval Baptismal Fonts in Clonfert Diocese and is also undertaking a survey of Dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) in County Galway in which he has identified evidence for 36 Dovecotes dating in range from the medieval period to the nineteenth-century so far.
He plans to publish the results of both studies in the near future.
