Reflecting on this testimonial from about her experience as a Black tourist (2nd frame - “White privilege is not having to google the destination’s treatment of your race beforehand”).

Our Founder can relate...experiences like catching the overnight trains in Europe and watching groups of white travelers pass by the station police with no scrutiny, while she and two African businessmen were the only ones stopped to have their passports checked.

But we must also remember that it wasn’t that long ago that The Negro Motorist Green Book, published during Jim Crow 1936-1966, was an absolute necessity for Black Americans to safely travel within the US. It contained a listing of hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and others that offered Black people respite while on the road.

No longer can our country neglect the work to ensure equal justice and opportunity for Black citizens.

This quote is associated with Lord Mansfield, British Chief Justice of the King’s Bench, who defied the status quo and ruled that chattel slavery was unsupported by common law in England and Wales (Somerset v Stewart). That was in 1772, and yet here we are today, still having not lived up to our highest ideals.

We believe in the power of travel to awaken empathy, foster inclusion, and heal divisions in society. But the journey first starts in your own heart and consciousness. So we encourage our Drifters to reflect and do something, however small or large, to be a part of the solution
