Lake Kariba is the world's largest artificial lake and reservoir by volume, constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s by building Kariba Dam across the Zambezi River. The primary objective was to provide hydroelectric power for industry on both sides of the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, formerly an internal border of the British Empire between Northern and Southern Rhodesia. With an area of almost 6,000 square kilometres, the dam is 128 metres tall and 579 metres long. The dam created Lake Kariba, which stretches for 280 kilometres and holds 185 cubic kilometres of water at its peak. The 2023/24 El Niño season brought extreme dry conditions to the southern region, resulting in a record-breaking dry rain season and historically low water levels. Fortunately, water levels are now slowly recovering due to sustained rainfall though still very low compared to the same period last year.

The Kalambo Falls site, a prominent archaeological site in Southern Africa, features an extensive record of human occupation spanning over 447,000 years. Recently, archaeologists have unearthed wooden structures dated to approximately 476,000 years ago, which may have functioned as shelters constructed by Stone Age people. Furthermore, Kalambo Falls has yielded evidence of the earliest human utilization of fire in Zambia, situated approximately 35 kilometres north of Mbala District in northern Zambia. Archaeologists have discovered a range of artifacts indicating early human utilization of fire, including charred logs, charcoal, carbonized grass stems and plants, and wooden implements that may have been hardened by fire. Did you know? The Zambian pound served as the official currency of Zambia from its independence in 1964 until decimalization occurred on January 16, 1968. It was subdivided into 20 shillings, with each shilling consisting of 12 pence. The introduction of the Zambian Kwacha followed a government policy decision to decimalize the national currency. The Currency Act of 1967 led to the establishment of the Zambian Kwacha and ngwee, which replaced the Zambian pound, shilling, and pence in 1968. The term kwacha originates from the Nyanja, Bemba, and Tonga languages, meaning "dawn", which alludes to the Zambian nationalist slogan of a "new dawn of freedom". In the Nyanja language, the term ngwee translates to "bright".
