KwaNgwenya is a rural region, and village in KZN, South Africa. An impoverished community of 20 000 residents lives in this remote area, with poor road infrastructure and limited access. As a result, the community is not well served by public transport. The nearest hospital is Bethseda Hospital, approximately 50 km away, over mountainous terrain. Access to potable water is also challenging for this community, with residents relying on local municipality for delivery of water, by truck, which is random and unreliable. When the trucks do arrive, the rationed water is transported by residents to their homes, in containers, with wheelbarrows.
After consultation with the local community, the Department of Health, and traditional leadership structures, Africa Foundation, https://www.africafoundation.org.za/, with the help of donor funding, set out to build a clinic on a designated site, which was once used as a mobile-clinic stopping point. The selected site, allocated for this project by the Tribal Authority of KwaNgwenya, was chosen due to accessibility, and its proximity to the main road, which is due to be tarred by the municipality.
The first phase of Mange Clinic has now been completed. The clinic is comprised of a two-room building, serving as waiting and consultation rooms, and ablution facilities for patients and staff. Water was the final requirement for the project’s initial success, and funds were required to drill for a reliable water supply, fit an electric-powered borehole / well-point, and install applicable header tanks and plumbing.
Privately Guided Safaris Pty Ltd, together with friends and supporters, is proud to have raised the USD 11 300 for Africa Foundation, https://www.africafoundation.org.za/, to fund the implementation of the required water supply for the clinic. Apart from the clinic now having a permanent water supply, the excess water supply will also be made available to the surrounding community.
Thank you to all involved, and for contributing!
