As a responsible Tour Operator, this issue has been in my mind for a longest time. Since I set up the company in 2017, it was a feeling for adventure of doing business in far away land, challenges of understanding culture and not to forget about the ultimate objective .... making money.

But as times goes by, I kind of notice in certain area changes is pretty dynamic, with many local opt to move out to avoid congestion, noise and disturbance in their daily life. Not to mentioned with tourist, it will also bring in different outlook and perspective that might not to be positive to their existing culture and lifestyle.

As such since 2018, I started to promote boutique type of travel with a compulsory pre-departure briefing for the guests to understand the local people habit and their culture.

Nevertheless, tourism money have contributed a lot to the local economy since 2001 King Mohammed VI started the first tourism initiative. It was reported by Morocco World News in March 2024, 2.1 million tourist had visited Morocco for the first 2 months alone. Minister of tourism of Morocco is aiming a total of 17.5 million visitors by 2026.

As part of the tourism chain, I am happy beyond words as now we can see many new accommodation, transportation and road conditions experienced major changes to give each visitors a great experience. Meantime, we here will still love to go along the idea of preserving the intangible asset of Moroccan culture.

Recently one big travel agency told me to open another tour operation in a specific country. I was surprised by her remark as even though we had known each other for 4 years, she did not buy any Morocco tour from me. She insisted that if I truly go and set it up in this country she indicated she will only sell my tours. This little conversation piqued my curious mind … “is there a good story behind it ?” I decided to dig into her company Morocco tour that she is currently promoting. Imagine to my horror, each day the itinerary looks like visiting many cities but when you read further in actual fact a “super touch & go of one monument” …. Until …. It's as good as having a great bus ride each day instead of a holiday.

Well, the question is ? Why do customers still choose to book this type of tour for their holiday? Lower price ? Big travel agency brand ? Hard sell ? Trust the sales promoter ?

Anyway, today we will discuss a short walking itinerary in the city of Tangier and I hope it will give some benefit to the visitors.

How many days are good for a short visit to Tangier ?

A good full day is preferred as it can let you absorb some of the interesting vibes of Tangier. Tangier has a long history of conflict, ever since it was settled in by the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians.

5th century - occupied by the Vandals.
6th century the Byzantines
7 & 8 century - The Arabs and Berbers
10th century - The Fatimids of Tunis Almoravides
11th century - The Almohades
12th century - The Merinids
15th century - The Portuguese
16th century- The Spanish
17th century - The British
19th century - The French

All of these influences have left their mark. They've created a town with a character quite unlike most other Moroccan cities. What better way than exploring the old kasbah as the fort and looking out to the Mediterranean sea just as the Phoenicians had done before.

What to do and see in Tangier by walking :-

4. St Andrew church - an Anglican church
5. The square - opposite the church is a fresh market.

7. Petit Socco - old part of Tangier including the medina
8. American Legation - holds historical and artistic artifacts and is home to a rich history of diplomatic relations between the United States and Morocco.
9.Cinema Rif - old movie theater where enjoy some artsy retro architecture ambiance.
10. The Gran Teatro Cervantes - the testament of art deco design building,
built by the Spanish in 1913.
11. Grand Cafe De Paris - is one of the oldest cafes in Tangier and is part of Tangier’s bohemian history. The cafe opened in 1927 and was a place of inspiration for many known artists and writers like Jack Kerouac, William Burrough, Paul Bowles and Tennessee Williams.

Usually I kind of notice that many my guests visiting Morocco are very busy with the number one agenda in their travel program ….. Take as many FB,IG,Tik Tok and now Xiaohongshu photos or videos …. Well, social media has conquered the world but at the same time, takes off many sensory experiences from us.

In this new series of articles, let us begin with the original inhabitants of Morocco, The Berber’s. Their story is hard to come by; but studies from the Greek, Roman and ancient Egyptian had shown 3000 years before BCE, their language had spread from the area of the river Nile to the Maghreb ( Libya, Tunisia, Algerie, Morocco, Western Morocco and Mauritania). Berbers refer to themselves as Imazighen (singular Amazigh) in Morocco, as well as in Libya, Egypt (Siwa) and other areas of North Africa, and speak the Berber language Tamazight.There are many theories of how the name of Berber come about but today we understand the meaning as “A Free Man”. Slowly the Berber’s moved into the Sahara region and the centuries to come witness the invades of this land from Phoenicians (who founded Carthage), Greeks (mainly in Libya), Romans, Vandals and Alans, Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans, French and Spain

As Islam came to Moulay Idriss in the 7th century, slowly the Berber’s converted to Islam. There are Jewish Berber and Christian Berber’s too. Most of the Berber are located in mountainous regions such as the Rif, western Atlas and Toubkal with a unique blend of nomadic and sedentary lifestyle. Along our route traveling in Morocco, we will be greeted with a gorgeous backdrop of their modest adobe homes, nestled amidst the mountains. Their livelihoods are diversified from farming, weaving, and dyeing fabrics to skillful crafting of colorful Amazigh carpets.

So how do all these information be a sensory enhancer to the travelers ?

From their craft of carpet weaving, we actually feel the fabric in our hand with each thread being made by another hand and each carpet will tell a new story.

Zerktan .... have you sit at the same chair as me here ? I am sure if you travel from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, almost all the cars stop here. This is where you may enjoy the beautiful view of the valley while having a cup of Morocco Mint Tea. Many will also visit the toilet here too. From the beginning of Morocco2u business back in 2017, this stop have made numerous improvement including now a well built toilet. There is a small fees for the toilet usage. Do be careful when walking down the steps to the toilet area as it is steep and sometimes is wet too.

Cinema Rialto, Casablanca

With the digital world getting traction, cinema around the world will be vanishing soon. Well, you must be wondering why I talk about this cinema today. Actually my daughter Uni-mate, architecture and interior design graduate wanted to visit Morocco to study the influence of history in Moroccan architecture and design. What better way than spending some time in Casablanca. Today Casablanca is full of amazing and artistic value building which by the terms of Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

What is Art Deco style ? And what is Art Nouveau style ?
Art Deco is a styling and fashioning on the the exterior of everything including building which was popularised by the French in 1910.

Art Nouveau is an decorative art which often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.

How all these style started in Morocco and Islamic country ? The story started in 1912, when Morocco was officially under the French Protectorate. The then resident general Hubert Lyautey employed Henri Prost in the urban planning of Casablanca. The city was divided into local area and European dwelling which spread out to the East side.

Architectural Digest's January 2016 issue highlights Casablanca as an emerging destination as Jean-Louis Cohen, co Author of the book Casablanca: Colonial Myths and Architectural Ventures. Cohen sites "Casablanca as being of the most creative cities of all of France's empire laid out according to an imaginative plan, with beautiful parks, striking architecture, from late Art Nouveau and Art Deco to radically modern."

Well, don't wait too long to visit as with the modernisation of the city of Casablanca, many such beautiful buildings is being tear down to make way for luxury hotels and apartments. When you are visiting do ask for Casablanca Art Deco & Architecture tour.

How to spend an amazing summer in Morocco ?

If you love the sun and the sea, then you will have great fun soaking all the great wind, surf and ocean vibes ! If you just want some Morocco summer lazy days, then you may consider this itinerary.

Day 1 - Hello to Essaouira, check out some unique places such as the rampart, meet some fishermen and observed some auction at the fishing port. Relax at the beach for some delicious seafood meals.

Day 2 - Nothing beat the morning roam around this little unique sea port for some fresh air and spend the day enjoying the remarkable village style setting of Essaouira. Evening have some great jazz music with a glass of cool beverages to end your day.

Day 3, 4 & 5 - Check out and take a bus to Imsouane, the legendary beach for great beach activities and surf. Agadir bus ticket about Euro 12 and the journey takes about 2 hours. Check in to the many resort here.

Day 6 - Arriving to Agadir check into the hotel and walk along the boulevard searching for some delicious ice cool Moroccan coffee or delicious gelatos.

Day 7 - Spend the afternoon check out some of the modern art museums such as Municipal Museum of Amazigh Heritage or Agadir Art Museum.

Day 8 - Chill day

How many days is enough for a visit to Casablanca ?

Casablanca is currently a financial and economical city in Morocco. As a traveler many stop here to visit the famous Hassan 2 Mosque, walk around the coastal line from the mosque to Anfa enjoying the cool breeze from the Atlantic ocean. Anfa is a new district with many high office towers and cafes. For those on a package tour, usually the mosque visit is in the morning and the bus will then leave Casablanca for the next city.

For a truly Casablanca experience, a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights will be a good idea. Here are some of the places that I truly like and have visited many times. As you may have observed here, even 2 days is not enough but you may check what is suitable for your interest.
