Did you know that oil extracted from Bog Myrtle repels the Highland Biting Midge and is used as an ingredient in commercial repellents?
It is a common plant in boggy areas of the Highlands and is known to support nearly 70 species of insect, and fixes nitrogen in the soil through its relationship with specific bacteria. Crushed Bog Myrtle leaves have a very distinctive scent, similar to Eucalyptus oil.

Our medicinal leeches at Highland Wildlife Park have started to produce egg cocoons... out of their own slime!

Working in partnership with Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust as part of the Species on the Edge Initiative, we aim to breed enough leeches to start new populations in suitable lochs around the country. This is incredibly exciting news for our first breeding season 🩸💚

Did you know that the Speyside Way runs through Drumguish, just a short distance away from Aonach? Running for 85 miles between Newtonmore and Buckie on the Moray coast, this long-distance path connects communities and provides some lovely walking and biking routes, passing numerous distilleries on the way to the coast. From Drumguish you can easily reach Kingussie, or head through Kincraig towards Aviemore and further afield.

Found a few miles from Aonach, this False Morel is a toxic Spring mushroom. If ingested, the toxin (gyromitrin) is metabolised to Monomethylhydrazine, a chemical better known as a rocket propellant used in applications such as the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn! Definitely one to avoid touching☠️

As dawn breaks, wander through the ancient Caledonian pine forest on the shores of Loch an Eilein (Loch of the Island) and marvel at the 13th-century ruined castle, secure on its own island. It's a peaceful and serene beauty spot now with the sound of siskin, crested t**s and chaffinches in the trees. How different it would have been in the 14th century, when it's believed that the Wolf of Badenoch, a bloodthirsty and brutal character, used here as one of his many lairs. Today as you pack a picnic and walk or cycle round the loch, it's hard to believe it has ever been anything other than the tranquil corner of the Cairngorms it is now.
