🥁And the Best Irish Exit award goes to...🥁
⠀..Summer 2020! I mean she could have said, bye or I’m leaving soon. But nope, it was here today, gone tomorrow.

Anyhow, hello Fall! What are some of y’all’s favorite Fall activities?! Ours is traveling. It’s cheaper, less tourists and we have lots to celebrate. September is LJ’s Bday, October is our Wedding Anniversary and November is my Bday.

Travel will for sure look different this Fall and in many cases nonexistent but we’re going to make the best of it. If you’re in the same boat, check out our blog post on the Getaway. If you already did and know you want to go, book it ASAP! Catskills East is currently booked for the next seven weeks. It may be more or less in your city. (There are currently Getaway houses outside of Atlanta, Austin + San Antonio, Boston, Raleigh + Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh + Cleveland, Portland, and Washington, DC).

SAVE THIS POST if you need a getaway!!

We took a trip!! After being in our apartment for over five months, we safely spent some extended time outside our four walls. Prior to this trip, our time outside had mostly been walks, the park, and joyrides. Thank you, , for the perfect stay.

The Getaway are tiny modern cabins located a short drive from major cities across America. They include everything you need and nothing that you don’t! They were designed to be the perfect retreat from technology and the hustle and bustle of city life. But in times like these, it’s also the perfect retreat from your own four walls!!

We stayed at the Catskills East location. It was lovely! The bed felt like we were sleeping on clouds, and the morning view of nature brought incredible peace. Our favorite part about the Getway House is that each cabin has its own socially distanced outdoor space. So we could take in the fresh crisp air with no worries. We were able to spend time together with fewer distractions and even added, making a campfire to our experiences together.

You can save $25 on your booking at all locations nationwide with our promo code, TRAVELCOUPLE. There are currently Getaway houses outside of Atlanta, Austin/San Antonio, Boston, Raleigh/Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh/Cleveland, Portland, and Washington, DC.

PRO TIP: If you are staying for multiple days and/or would like to getaway often, chose the multi-night packs offering. The pack offering can be used at any cabin or location and average out to be much less per night. The pack is a bundled package purchased in advance and can be used for consecutive nights or mixed and matched. You have two years to use after purchasing.

Let us know what questions you have and if you know someone who lives in a city with a Getaway House nearby, tag them! Also, have you traveled this summer? If so, where did you go?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗜𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗲

𝗛𝗘𝗥: Before LJ and I got engaged, we read “Before You Say I Do Devotional” by H. Norman Wright. “The Phantom In Your Marriage” was one of the most impactful sections for me and probably helped prevent issues in the early days of our marriage.

My takeaway was it’s okay to have and strive to be the best wife that you can be. But don’t let the picture that you have in your head of a perfect wife create unnecessary stress in your marriage or life. Your spouse may not even be aware of this phantom or image that you aren’t living up to. The greater the distance your phantom is from your reality, the more frustrating it will be to you.

What do you expect of yourself as a wife or husband? Does your spouse know about these expectations?

[Date Ideas From Around The World Series]
Highlighting Jamaica 🇯🇲

𝗛𝗘𝗥: While many of us aren’t traveling right now, we can plan!

Jamaica is always a good time. I’ve been for day trips while cruising, girls’ trips, and family/baecations. It’s one of those countries that you can return to over and over again. There are resorts and accommodations to fit every budget. A few short years ago, you had to travel to places like the Maldives, Bora Bora or Fiji to experience the ultimate luxury of an overwater bungalow. But now you can even have that in Jamaica! With just a short flight from many cities in the US, you can be in the tropical paradise of Jamaica; getting kissed by the sun, indulging in the best jerk foods, and chilling out like a carefree teenager.

If you are going for a couple’s trip or even a family trip with time to sneak away with your love, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to create special memories with your spouse. Below are 5 date ideas you should consider when in Jamaica! Click the link in our bio for details and additional ideas. For general trip planning, check out these Caribbean gurus, and

Social Distanced Date Ideas….Save and Share 😊

When the quarantine first started, everyday felt like a date night and even going to the grocery store was an adventure. But at this point, I’m like nah, partner we need some actual dates. Thing is we’re being super cautious about Covid. (We still haven’t eaten out in 124 days).

This picnic was the perfect safe and socially distanced date! Highly recommended if you’re feeling like me! Lol Below are some others that we may try or do again.

💡 Picnics (Obvi)
💡 Geocaching (I know, I know, google it)
💡 The Memory Lane Date (Scrolling back to old pictures on your phone can always spark fun memories...and remind us of when we were able to have fun outside)
💡 Take a Workout Class together
💡 Tennis (Even if you suck it can still be fun)
💡 Hiking (At this point, just walking amongst trees works, haha)
💡 Club at Home aka The Dancing Date (The more spontaneous, the better!)
💡 International Date Night at Home (And you don’t even need a passport)
💡 Game Night (Fellas, make sure it’s something competitive 😉)
💡 Host a Virtual Double Date
💡 Take Virtual Cooking Class
💡 Spa Night at Home
💡 Joy Ride (In a neighborhood with massive homes)

Have you been dating during quarantine? If you have other socially distanced date ideas, share below.

𝗛𝗘𝗥:🍦 🍦 🍦I love ice cream and I have a crazy amount of childhood/teenage memories that involve it. Like all the times my grandmother and I would have ice cream at midnight when she babysat me. (She’s the best!) Or the time in high school when I was heartbroken and only cookies and cream could make me feel better. I could literally go on and on. Lol
Nonetheless, even with my ice cream obsession, I hadn’t had much until recently. When I realized how dedicated they are to social justice and equality, I ran out to buy some! They even have a flavor named “Justice Remix.” To me it's a win/win, the ice cream is delicious and I know the money spent there is being used for good. When equality and fair representation are driving points for where we (Black people), along with our allies, spend our money, America has no choice but to listen.

Drop some of your favorite black-owned and ally owned/operated businesses in the comments.

Happy Juneteenth Y’all!!!

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of Slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX to announce that slavery had been abolished to the remaining 200,000 enslaved people in Texas. This was two years after The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law. We aren’t free until we’re all free hence Juneteenth.

Juneteenth was originally celebrated with prayer meetings, singing spirituals and wearing new clothes to represent newfound freedom. Today some cities have parades, individuals host parties and cookouts, strategize on ways to further the culture etc. There are many ways to celebrate Juneteeth.

Today we are working with the . The mission of Black Travel Alliance is to support Black content creators around the world and increase their representation in the travel industry including, but not limited to, employment, conferences and media. Today, on this very special day, we are focused on holding the travel industry accountable. We have asked that the travel related companies by sharing the KPIs specified in The Black Travel Scorecard. Black Americans spend over 60 billion a year on travel and Black people in Europe spend twice as much. So we should absolutely have better representation in the travel industry.

While we appreciate the support during , action is required to end systemic racism and more specifically the systemic lack of diversity in the travel industry.

So ask all travel companies who have released a statement of support to and—within the next 72 hrs—publicly provide the following information:

✈️ Employment - Number and percentage of Black people in management & on staff

✈️ Conferences & Tradeshows - Black representation on speaker panels, workshops, sessions, etc.

✈️ Paid Advertising/Marketing Campaigns - Black representation in TV, radio, print and digital channels including social media

✈️ Press - Black representation on media/press trips

✈️ Philanthropy - Charitable contributions and support (i.e. mentorship and intern programs, etc.) to Black charities and community groups

You made statements and policies advocating equal opportunity. Show us the proof! If you don't have stats, provide next steps on how you plan to level the playing field.

Thank you, of for starting the work!

...BUT WE’RE HOPEFUL! 🙏🏾
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The past few weeks were HARD. Seeing Black people murdered and harassed by the cops and racist people back to back to back was infuriating, heartbreaking and made existing anxieties about race more intense. It was difficult to work without crying.
But today, we are hopeful and truly believe that this is a turning point in history. People of all colors are unifying to fight against racial inequalities, injustice and police brutality. Real lasting change is going to require action from us all. So we reached out to our friends who are activists, lawyers and business leaders and created this 21 Days of Activism Challenge to get you active. With this challenge you will make an impact, learn a ton and be more equipped to create a world that is better for us all.
There will still be work to do when the challenge is over! This is a marathon not a sprint. But you’ll be ready! Link in the bio to download the challenge.
We’re starting on Saturday, June 13th and would love to have you join us but you can of course start on the day that works best for you!
𝗛𝗘𝗥: SECRET SAUCE - Prayer has always been my secret sauce. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest privileges we have as children of God. Imagine being able to call your favorite celebrity anytime you want. How dope would having that kind of access be?! Most of us can’t call our favorite celebrities yet we have 24/7 access to the Son of God. That’s wild and what’s even wilder is that nothing we can do (or don’t do) can separate us from his love! Nope, not even the worst thing you’ve ever done and still feel guilty about. Anyhow, now more than ever, I am praying. It is helping me stay sane and hopeful. I’m also doing the and being intentional about my mental health. For me that means maintaing my therapy sessions, bubble baths, journaling, and cuddles with the hubs.
What are you doing to stay sane in these crazy times?!
This picture was taken back when we were allowed to go outside. Lol. It's in front of the Western Wall (aka Wailing Wall), a religious site in Jerusalem where thousands of people journey every year to leave their prayers. The prayers are spoken or written down and placed in cracks in the wall. Rumor has it that you are closer to heaven here. It’s such a peaceful place. On both of my trips to Jerusalem, I found myself returning to the Western Wall multiple times. I highly recommend checking it out if you visit!
𝗛𝗜𝗦: I will admit, if you asked me 5 years ago, “what do you know about Cleveland?”, I’m not sure how far I would have gotten without uttering the word “LeBron” somewhere in my response. And yes, MJ, being an Ohio native, would have been highly disappointed in me! But that’s absolutely not the case today. We had a blast during our weekend in CLE. We learned a bit, discovered a lot, and ate a ton. So much that it’s impossible to fit our experience in a little caption (sidenote: blog post coming soon), but here are some good-to-know’s!
Getting There ✈️🚉: When purchased in advance, flights to Cleveland from the East Coast (NYC) and Down South (ATL) can be under $200 and under $300 from the West Coast (LA). If flying isn’t your thing, driving isn’t too bad, depending on where you’re coming from. It’s a two-hour drive from Columbus Ohio, a three-hour drive from Detroit, a four-hour drive from Cincinnati, and a seven-hour drive from NYC.
Getting Around 🚕: We suggest getting a rental car. We Uber’d most of our time in Cleveland and then eventually rented a car because we wanted the convenience of exploring the city freely. It also allowed us to focus on visiting venues based on the timing of the day over proximity from one another. Not to mention, it saved us money, as Uber charges can quickly add up.
Where To Stay 🏠 🛏: We highly recommend staying downtown. You’ll find lots of options for every budget. We stayed at Kimpton Schofield Hotel and enjoyed our time there. It was within walking distance from a lot of things on our list. And let’s not forget, they have a complimentary happy hour every evening. The Apple Cider was delicious!
Freebies 🆓: If you stop by the Cleveland’s Visitors Center, you can pick up a free brewery passport, cost-saving coupons, make reservations and get suggestions for your trip. The Cleveland Museum of Art is free and has so much to see!
$$$ 💵: If you’re coming from the East or West Coast, you will be very pleased with the cost of things! If you come from another Midwest city, the price points are pretty similar.
What To Do 📋: Check out our last post for date ideas and activities!
𝗛𝗘𝗥: Hi Y’all! Happy New Year and Decade! We missed you ❤️🤗 We’ve spent the last three last weeks (mostly) off of social to gain clarity and focus for this new decade.
Have you ever noticed that we talk about life in decades?? For instance...I’m an 80’s baby. I love music from the 90s. 70’s fashion is making a comeback. She grew up in the 60’s.
Since we talk about life in decades and ultimately measure it in decades, it’s probably a good idea that we plan and have a vision for the decade.
Many of you have already written your goals for the year. Some of you have also written your vision for the decade. 👏🏾👏🏾 But if you haven’t, I encourage you to do so. Beyond it being the “adult” thing to do, it’s actually really fun and exciting. When you are thinking long term, it helps you have the right perspective about everything else. A potential step back for a leap in the long term becomes much more bearable.
Anyhow, what’s something you want to accomplish in this decade? I want to create a series of spin (indoor cycling) classes that are distributed on various VOD exercise platforms. (SN: I’ve only told two people so I felt mad vulnerable writing it here😫 but tis the season for getting uncomfortable!)
𝗛𝗘𝗥: Few places do Christmas decorations better than NYC! Many of you have probably heard about or seen the gorgeous tree at The Rockefeller Center. But around the corner at Lotte New York Palace is an equally beautiful tree with less crowds. 😍😍 The kicker is that there a mailbox inside for the kiddos to mail letters to Santa. We thought that was so cute!
Anyhow, we have a confession..we still haven’t decorated our tree! Have you?!
P.S. The Lotte New York Palace () is one of the top 10 hotels in NYC according to . If this hotel is on your bucket list, might want to book soonish as their cyber sale is still going on..Up to 40% off bookings through September 7, 2020! Must book by December 10th for this pricing.
𝗛𝗘𝗥: This pool is gorgeous and we loved it. But what I enjoyed even more were the nine steam rooms/baths! The various steam rooms work together to open your pores, clean your skin, stimulate blood circulation and get rid of toxins. If you love a good skin treatment and can stand the heat, put this on your list! If you aren’t staying at the hotel, you can buy day passes or half day passes. We did a half day for $50 USD pp. (Prices may change depending on the season so check their website for updates)
𝗛𝗜𝗦: My wife loves the sauna and always gets me (and her family and friends) to go with her whenever she can. I don’t know if it’s due to claustrophobia, hypochondria, or simply a lack of focus, but I can barely stand the heat in saunas. But I was actually able to have a nice and relaxing time here at . It definitely helps when you have completely full access to an amazing pool like this!
Do you enjoy saunas?
𝗛𝗜𝗦: Throughout my relationship with MJ there have been a lot of lessons learned. But of them all, two always seem to stand out more than the others. Lesson #1 - “Never stand in the way of a determined woman!” And then there’s Lesson #2 - “When it comes to food, travel, or experiences, re-read Lesson #1 ...and add another exclamation point at the end.” So, a couple of months ago MJ came across an IG post about from a friend of ours (thanks Brandi/!). Now MJ doesn’t even like pizza like that, but when I tell you she didn’t stop bringing up this place every time the topic of food came up... Loooooordt. And to add to my confusion, this pizza place was easily 45 mins away from us once you include NYC traffic. I didn’t get it! But what I did know was that there was no way we were driving over a 1/2 hour for pizza. We’re minutes away from any given bodega and pizza shop in the city so I wasn’t having it.
⠀..Well, IG family, I gave in and she eventually won the battle (hey, “a happy wife, a happy life” 😏). I’ll spare you the play-by-play details, but it was a cool experience. They pretty much had any pizza topping you could think of and more! And I was literally eating pizza for 3 days! Glad we were able to finally cross it off our list!
What lengths have you gone just to satisfy a food craving?
𝟱𝟬 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 - Chefchaouen is a city located in Northern Morocco. It is often called, The Blue City due to its gorgeous blue walls and buildings throughout the city. The city has a really interesting history. In 1920, it was captured by the Spanish, forming part of Spain’s territory in Morocco. So even today, you will see and hear many people speaking Spanish there. The city wasn’t always blue but during the Second World War, many Jews who were fleeing Europe and Hi**er immigrated to Morocco. They painted the walls blue in the Jewish Quarters where they resided to symbolize the sky and heaven. As for the rest of the city, there are a lot of folktales as to why it is also blue. Some say its to repel mosquitoes, others say to keep cool, others say simply because it looks nice and attracts more tourists. Who knows but we do know that it is a sight to see!
Do y’all like history lessons like this or nah? Let us know, please!
02/10/2019
𝗛𝗜𝗦: One of my favorite things about traveling is having the opportunity to walk the same steps previously walked by others. I find it even more fascinating when you put it into perspective depending on the person, time, or place. Those same steps can have different meanings. Take Times Square in NYC, for example. At any given time, you can come across a tourist who is mesmerized by all the lights while across the street there’s a NYC native annoyed by all the tourists. Same steps, different feelings!
So it was no surprise that I was totally blown away by the Old City of Jerusalem. So much rich history as we walked through the different alleys, trying to find our way around. The coolest moment, hands down, was when we walked down the actual street Jesus walked before he was crucified. So, if you ever find yourself in Jerusalem take a walk down the Via Dolorosa. And for dramatic effects, make sure you play the first 25 secs of Kanye’s “Jesus Walks” on repeat. 😉
𝗛𝗘𝗥: Totally agree with LJ about being blown away and this was my second time here. Jesus Walks was my jam back in the day but this old hymn called, “I know it was the blood” was playing in my head while on Via Dolorosa. So grateful ❤️
Have you ever visited a city and left wanting to learn more?
01/10/2019
𝗛𝗘𝗥: I’m a sucker for body treatments and since no one does skin care better than Mother Nature, best believe, I LOVED the Dead Sea experience. At minimum it’s like a soothing hot oil treatment for your body. But for the best experience, first get a Dead Sea Mud Massage, letting the mud soothe your skin, stress and minor body pains. Then let the sun gently caress your skin and dry the mud before going to float around in the Dead Sea so that the oil and minerals can mingle with mud on your skin. Nothing else to say but that Jordan is a ten hour flight from NYC and I’d go back just for this.
𝗛𝗜𝗦: I really liked the Dead Sea, too. But my experience was slightly different. The second I walked into the Dead Sea I felt stings and burns all over my feet and legs. Thanks to my un-pedicured feet and mosquito-abused legs, the salt in the water was no joke and had no mercy on me. Who knows, maybe I’m a lightweight when it comes to natural water. And I can’t swim so that took the experience up a notch. So, unfortunately I didn’t get to test out the buoyancy in the water but I could definitely feel it. All in all, the mud bath was a cool experience, though. When in Jordan, you do what the Jordanians do. So I would definitely do it again...I’ll just make sure I come prepared with freshly pedicured feet, water shoes, and maybe a swimming lesson or two under my belt.
Trust the Timing of Your Life
𝗛𝗘𝗥: Recently, I’ve been studying the importance of trusting God’s timing and plan for your life. It’s so easy to compare yourself to others and feel less than or behind. I’m guilty of doing this sometimes but honestly its just so stupid and completely unproductive. The thing is that we all have different purposes and things to accomplish on earth. And, because we are all so different, we each need a different set of experiences to be our best selves and equipped to complete our mission. So while one season or chapter in your life may seem like it’s never going to end the next will happen like rapid fire.
For instance, LJ and I were both single for five years then we met and the pace of our dating life quickly sped up. We met March 2015, had our first date a month later, got engaged in 2016 and married in 2017. That season of being single wasn’t wasted. We are better partners because of it. The same way that God went BOOM, BOOM, BOOM in our relationship, I believe he can do the same for others, and work the same kind of blessing in other areas of our/your lives that feel stagnant.
Trust the Timing of your Life! All things are working together for your good.
𝗛𝗘𝗥: On this , I must show some love to LJ. I’m finally fully well after being sick off and on for the past two weeks. LJ was the best doctor! He made me homemade chicken noodle soup, multiple tea concoctions, did early morning and late night store runs for meds and lemons, ran perfect bath water and said some prayers that God answered. All while making me feel beautiful despite the 🤢 of being sick and the humongous pimple under my eyebrow. Lol, LJ, thank you! I’m so grateful for you! You are my MVP and I love you so much!! 😘😘
Anyone else, grateful for their spouse?
Tag your spouse below and tell them one thing you’re grateful for! It can be small or big. It’ll make their day☺️
09/09/2019
𝗛𝗜𝗦: I have a confession and I’m willing to admit it on the interwebs. I am a recovering perfectionist. I actually don’t like to call myself a perfectionist, but my wife does. I think my problem is a little different. You see, I’m a Virgo. And with that comes a lot of great things. We’re caring, loving, and all around amazing. And not to mention, we’re modest and humble! Heck, look around you. Your favorite co-worker...most likely is a Virgo. Lol.
Ok, ok, I’m totally kidding. I literally had to look up all the supposed traits of a Virgo. BUT, one thing we are definitely known for is being a perfectionist. We don’t like to half-ass things. So, with that, I often find myself hesitant to get started on projects and tasks because I don’t think I’m actually ready to get on the starting blocks. If I can predict a problem, my thought is “why even start?!” Valid question? Right?? Wrong!
Well, with this new year of life, I vow to change my perspective of things. I’m going to get over that initial hump and simply hit “start,” regardless of my unfounded assumptions and predictions of the situation at hand. Often you can psych yourself out of doing something because you feel like you may already know the eventual outcome. Well, in the illustrious words of Pastor of Transformation Church, “𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱!” Those words couldn’t be more true. So, that is my mantra for the new year. Now, watch me work!
Who else find themselves struggling to start projects because you don’t feel ready for what’s to come?
𝗛𝗜𝗦: This year, for my bday, I had two requirements: I didn’t want to go into work and I didn’t want to be in the NYC area. Of course that left a lot of options opened but didn’t make the choice easy. Nonetheless, eventually we decided on Lisbon, Portugal.
Since today is my birthday, on this trip MJ is letting us experience the city the way I like to experience foreign cities...with absolutely no planning involved. And I’ll have to admit, as much as I can tell it’s killing her that we’re literally going with the flow (no, really, we literally walked towards the water this afternoon because I caught a nice breeze and wondered in that direction) but I love her for it! We’re about 6 hrs into our trip and I can honestly say we haven’t done too much, but sometimes, on days like today, all you care about is not where you are but who you’re with! MJ, thank you for letting me have this day! And tomorrow, the city is all yours! Happy Birthday to me!
𝗛𝗘𝗥: You can whatever you like! Happy Birthday to my homie, lover, friend, husbae and favorite travel souvenir! ❤️ Please show him some bday love, IG Fam❤️🤗
𝗛𝗘𝗥: Do you remember when you first started traveling internationally and what that felt like for you?
My first international trip, outside of the Carribean was to London in 2007. I stayed there for almost six months to study, work and explore a few other countries, including Morocco. It was truly a special and transformative chapter in my life. Even though, I had my share of rough times while abroad, I pretty much lived in a state of happiness. My level of gratitude, vigor for life and amazement by new things and experiences was at an all time high. I wanted to see and experience everything…. Oddly enough, riding a camel in Morocco was high on my list.
So after taking a plane, bus, ferry and very crowded car ride to get to Smir, Morocco that’s exactly what I planned to do. BUT to my disappointment, upon arrival, I was told that it was unsafe to ride camels in that particular city. My schedule didn’t permit me going to another city at that time. So I didn’t get my Moroccan Camel ride experience, then. 😢
Fast Forward to 2019, twelve years later and two camel rides in, I finally got to cross off riding a camel in Morocco. It may not seem like a huge deal but this moment was so special. I felt like that giddy girl again who had just fallen in love with travel, only this time, I was experiencing the world with the love of my life. That moment continues to put things into perspective for me. Even with Instagram and an upgraded travel style and standard, I’m still just a girl who wants to see the world.
