Visit Shipston Travel and tourism page for Shipston-on-Stour So what are you going to find when you come to visit us? You might need to keep coming back to fit it all in!

From Shipston-on-Stour you can walk or cycle immediately into the stunning beauty of the North Cotswolds, yet in just 20 minutes you can be in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, the heart of quintessential England. You’re going to find a traditional English market town with teashops, butchers, bakers – and, yes, markets. But you’ll also find a bespoke tailor, a gingerbread maker, wet fish shop (an

d you can’t get much further from the sea than here!), accessories store, a mother-and-daughter barber’s shop where you can get a wet shave and much, much more. We pride ourselves on the variety of our independent shops, for which we are justly famed. There’s also our local museum, our historic alleyways, art gallery and fascinating architecture – look for the fossilised ammonite built into an outside wall near the library. It’s a lively, friendly community here, there’s a lot going on. Come for our live music, our food festival, the Wool Fair, the Victorian evening in winter – the list just goes on and on. Check Events to find out what’s happening and when in and around Shipston. Use our unique accommodation database to find out where to stay. From your Shipston base there are any number of day trips, letting you see what this beautiful area has to offer. There’s everything Shakespeare in Stratford, of course, also there’s Moreton-in-Marsh, Campden and Broadway; there’s the Heritage Motor Centre for cars, Compton Verney for art and artefacts, the unique National Trust gardens at Hidcote, the Batsford Arboretum – all within a half-an-hour’s drive. But then, Oxford, Warwick, Birmingham and Cheltenham each make a good day out, too. What makes Shipston such a convenient, special and independent place to come to? Visit us and find out.

Fancy a crack at an eternal and charmed life? Does it help to persuade you if you know that your actions will count towards stopping the destruction of the harvest at a small Warwickshire village? Then come tonight before 8pm to the Halford Inn, four miles from Shipston, for the annual Rat Feeding festival. It’s a tradition said to date back to 888AD, where a procession of people will leave from the Inn, walk to the Roman bridge and throw cheese down to Ratty. Does it work? Well, the harvest hasn’t been destroyed by rats over the last few centuries, but then, no 1,200-year-old has yet turned up to regale us with tales of yore, either. Still, better safe etc. And you can always reward yourself afterwards with a pint of foaming ale for a job well done!

Turn out and give the girls’ a hand tomorrow Friday – Stage 3 of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour will be hurtling round our streets! The route takes the international cyclists from their start at Atherstone to finish at Royal Leamington Spa. We’re slap bang in the middle. Last year was the first time the major event came to Warwickshire, and they were so impressed with our challenging terrain that they’re back for more punishment. And this time they’ll be facing a strenuous test – the never-ending grind from Shipston up to Brailes! Last year it was downhill all the way… The lead cars are expected down Darlingscote Road shortly after midday, the riders following on thereafter. Picture shows the gallant ladies powering through last year – so be warned, they’re coming from the other direction this year!

A new ‘attraction’ will be opening in the town in late summer – Shipston will be getting its very own Tourist Information Centre. Situated between the George Townhouse Hotel and the White Bear pub, the centre will be manned by knowledgeable, local volunteers who are very keen to explain why Shipston consistently gets voted among the happiest and best places to live in the country. The centre will open as a ‘taster’ on Monday for the Wool Fair. Please drop in and say Hi – you can be assured of a red carpet welcome!

Shipston’s latest culinary sensation is set to open well in time for the Wool Fair on May Bank Holiday 2017. Called the Bower House restaurant, it is formed by converting two shops on High Street and Market Place, and will seat 70+ diners with guest rooms above. The Roux brothers have been very interested in and supportive of the project, and have advised and been consultants throughout, but will not be running the restaurant. Head chef is Michelin one-star chef Darren Brown, pictured in white with restaurant consultant Henry Harris in what will be the large kitchen. The emphasis will be on providing good food consistently using local produce in a friendly and relaxing environment, he said. Yet another reason to come to eat and stay in our lovely, lively market town!

Get ready for le weekend - it's the French market on Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. It's your chance to try something a little different for Sunday lunch other than rosbif, perhaps confit, charcutierie, or even pain et fromage, washed down with good, solid vin rouge. Shipston High Street will be closed to vehicles for the event, free parking at the Old Mill car parks.

Peace and tranquillity beckons in the centre of Shipston. St Edmunds churchyard is open to the public from 9am to 5pm until September 30. The noise of the town and traffic stop almost as soon as you pass through the gate and step into a historic part of our beautiful market town. Drop by for a moment's quiet contemplation to recharge the soul, and check out the burial histories in the handy folders. The churchyard is a wildlife sanctuary. There may be tombs and headstones hidden by long grass - so please take care.

Are you looking for eternal life and good fortune? Then get to Halford on Monday evening and feed the rats! The annual Rat Feeding Festival at Halford, just four miles from Shipston on the road to Stratford, is one of those quirky, quintessentially English events that you tend to only hear about by chance. Traditionally, it takes place at 8pm on the 8th day of the 8th month, when we gather to appease with cheese. This year, the village hall will be open for refreshments from 7pm. The rat-feeding crowd will muster just before 8 to walk to the bridge and feed the rats - bring your own cheese offering! - after which it's back to the village hall for Viking ales. Why do we do it? Well, it's a friendly, unusual event, so why not come down on Monday night and find out?

Keep Sunday free, pack up a family picnic and cross your fingers for good weather down at the river by the Old Mill, Shipston – it’s time for the fourth annual Quacky Races! The great Duck Race will start at 2pm on the Old Mill side of the bridge and feature a number of races through the bridge to the finish line by the fish pool. Sponsor a duck and you could land yourself a cash prize! And with races ranging from a grand free for all through to specialist sprint races, you’re bound to find something that – dare we say it – fits the bill. This year, Shipston Angling Club has teamed up with Totally Locally to make it a bigger and better event than ever. Proceeds will be split between Shipston Home Nursing and the Angling Club’s ever-popular Fish ’n’ Frolics festival, taking place the following weekend.

Shipston’s main hotel is reopening tomorrow after a major, four-month refit – and those who have had a sneak preview say that the effects are stunning, the service amazing and the food to die for. Renamed the George Townhouse through a vox pop of Shipston residents, the hotel is firmly in the centre of the High Street, ideally placed for the Wool Fair, Shipston Proms, Food Festival and the many markets and other events we organise just outside its front door. It’s open for breakfast onwards tomorrow and the rooms are ready in time for the first major event of our calendar – the Wool Fair, on May 30 – so now you have no excuse not to stay on in our friendly market town!
