More photos from our first Wildlife Expedition of the season! There is still a lot of water in the Altagracia nature reserves at this time of year and wildlife is still quite dispersed. We did not get to see anacondas or giant otters (February through March are better months for these). We saw armadillos, a giant anteater with her cub, deer, scarlet macaws, howlers, capybaras, caiman and lots of birds, however, and the wetlands and sunsets are just breathtaking! Always amazing and humbling to visit this spectacular place ❤️ Thanks to the folks at Buenaventura Lodge for their hospitality!

Good evening from Los Llanos!

We have embarked on our first Wildlife Expedition of the season with guests from 🇨🇦

December through March is dry season and allows to access the more remote nature reserves of Altagracia where we look for colorful birds, armadillos, giant otters, caiman, anacondas, and anteaters, as well as enjoy the otherworldy and serene scenery of moriche palm tree dotted lakes and wetlands. 🌴

A minimum of 3 nights but ideally 4-5 nights is recommended for the Expedition tour. Get all the details by emailing us at [email protected]

The eastern plains, "Llanos Orientales", in Colombia are cowboy country and teeming with some of Colombia's most notable wildlife species. A good place to experience the Llanos sunsets through your horse's ears, ride along herds of capybaras, deer, and a multitude of birds. Spot a giant anteater from the elevated vantage point or sight armadillos, foxes, monkeys and tamanduas, or even an anaconda out in the wetlands.

Whether you are a novice rider looking to give it a try on a two-hour ride or a seasoned equestrian looking to ride for several days every day, we have a variety of tour packages that help you explore the area.

Our local horses are calm, responsive and well taken care of. ♡

A rufescent tiger-heron adult with the typical rich chestnut-colored head and neck and slate-colored flanks. The forest heron likes to use the edges of tree-lined streams and other bodies of water to prey on fish, insects, dragonfly larvae, and snakes.

It is usually solitary. It will defend its feeding ground from other herons, including the locally common whistling heron.

Capybara groups consist of a dominant male, several females and over a dozen of pups at a time. The male (pictured) is best distinguished by its scent gland, which it rubs on trees, roots and bushes. He also marks his territory with his a**l glands, similar to dogs.

More references to dogs?

Capybaras make a bark-like sound to warn others when a potential predator approaches.
They are as intelligent as an intelligent dog - and require companionship.
Oh, and you will see them on our tours! Both dogs (some) and capybaras (plenty).

The jabiru stork and the capybara. Two species that represent the Llanos. They will often be seen in paintings of the Llanos, be mentioned in folkloric songs and tales of the region, and are commonly seen just from the road when travelling across Casanare.

For our "new" logo creation in 2019 we had chosen one bird, the emblematic and locally much adored "gaván/gabán", and the most quintessential Llanos animal of all, the capybara, locally known as "chigüiro", to represent "Wildlife Safaris & Birding Tours". They aren't the rarest, they aren't the most spectacular wildlife of los Llanos, arguably (!) not even the prettiest. They are typical, characteristic and adorable, and you are likely to see them on our tours.

In a world of promises, we pride ourselves with honesty. And we wanted to see this reflected in our logo. When booking with us, you will get clear email responses on what you can - and can't - expect on our tours. We tell you exactly which species you are likely to see and provide customized itineraries to help satisfy your wildlife cravings. Our team has outstanding product knowledge and maintains close ties with local wildlife guides, lodges and nature reserves to be able to pull together dream trips.

The jabiru and the capybara are the cover, the flagship, the essentials, but come on in and you will discover so much more. Blossoming trees, beautiful settings, bird song, sunsets, surprise wildlife encounters, serenity in a far savanna landscape or an endless wetland, and a people that take pride in their culture and shower you with hospitality. And at the end of your trip you will feel like you have unlocked a whole different world.

Our clients' feedback and comments are one of the reasons we have been running our tours for nearly 10 years. Thank you!

Another rodent you may spot during our tours, especially at dawn on walks along the Pauto River: the black agouti. The bunny sized mammal enjoys fruits and nuts and houses in burrows on the riberbank. They are solitary or in pairs.

Some facts that show just how cool iguanas are:

🦎 Iguanas communicate with each other nonverbally by bobbing their heads and moving the flap of skin under their necks called a dewlap. This way they greet/acknowledge other iguanas, court females and warn competitors.

🦎 Tail whipping is their language for 'fight'. They can even drop off their tail. This is a survival mechanism allowing iguanas to escape predators. Tails usually break off cleanly at the vertebrae - and grow back.

🦎 Iguanas are able to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes. They will often jump from tree to water using their powerful tail for swimming to escape. They are also able to leap down 40-50 feet without injury, and will often drop from a tree with a thud.

Llanos Tours & Safaris

Vast prairies, wetlands, exotic wildlife, the most beautiful sunsets and Llanero cowboys inspire us to take visitors to experience this serene and pristine part of Colombia. We tailor day tours and multi-day adventures including wildlife observation tours, horse riding trips, birding excursions and tailor-made and cultural expeditions across spectacular nature reserves, farms and haciendas in Yopal and beyond.

Our motivation - besides showing off the unspoiled sceneries and wildlife - is our guests’ overwhelming and exceptionally positive feedback. With every tour, every visitor and every moment spent out there in the Llanos, we feel the pull and fascination for this wonderful destination. The Llanos’ natural treasures simply fascinate and captivate nature loving souls, and being able to offer a trip here and to promote the region for the love of conservation and the pristine countryside, is exactly what keeps us going.

With our work we have been able to support and propel conservation projects and to provide access to a range of off-beat private farms. We were able to connect local communities with visitors from far and near and helped contribute to the region’s growing interest in sustainable nature tourism, fighting on the forefront for conserving both the culture and the ecosystems of Los Llanos.
