Despite being winter, walking through the mountains in Austria is an incredible experience. The spectacular views of the mountains and trails covered with white snow with the contrast of the blue sky and the green of the trees is a breathtaking sight

The "Grenzparnoramaweg" takes you along the border between Austria (Styria) and Slovenia. During the 10 km, I crossed the border 13 times!! Simply because the trail follows the best views and not the border. Nonetheless, the ridgeline (up to 773 masl.) offers stunning 360-degree views in several places. Photo: Arnold Weisz ©

The beautiful late summer weather with 20 °C / 68 °F during the last week offered a perfect opportunity for an autumn hike in the Wienerwald, starting from Hafnerberg. The 8.9 km / 5.5 mi hike through the forest and cultural landscape was a wonderful experience with a great view. The starting point is only about 30 min. by car south of Vienna. Austria has lots of picturesque castles. However, one stands out - the fairytale castle Burg Liechtenstein in Maria Enzersdorf, not far from Vienna. The castle was built in the 12th century, but was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1529 and 1683, and lay in ruins until it was rebuilt in 1884. Burg Liechtenstein is the ancestral castle of the House of Liechtenstein that rules the ministate Liechtenstein. All photos: Arnold Weisz / traveltoaustria.info ©

Although the first snow has arrived in the Alps, there are still fantastic conditions for mountain tours. I hiked up up to Grosser Speikkogel 2140 masl. from the west side (Carinthia). This is the highest peak in Koralpe, which means you get a phenomenal 360-degree view. On the way down I took a break at Koralpenahaus for Süsser Reindling, a sweet speciality from Carinthia with cinnamon.

There are many interesting Roman sites in Austria, but Carnuntum is by far the best experience. Travel through time back to the Roman Empire and get an insight into life by the Danube for about 2,000 years ago. The Carnuntum Archaeological Park is no ordinary museum, but showcases reconstructed houses in an open-air museum.

When we are not hiking in the Austrian Alps, we also take the time to explore a bit of the country's long history. We can certainly recommend a visit to the excavations of the Roman city of Carnuntum (not far from Vienna). Incredible reconstructions give a good insight into life on the Danube 2,000 years ago. We will come up with a detailed article in due course.
