Have a Kochi-style New Year🍱🎉

With the year-end holidays approaching fast, the people of Kochi are starting to plan their New Year festivities. Rather than big parties and fireworks displays, New Year Japan is a time for hanging out with family and close friends.

As you might expect, food is an essential part of New Year celebrations, and Kochi has its own unique dining style that is not only lavish but also reinforces community bonds at the start of the new year.

In addition to painstakingly prepared traditional “osechi” dishes consisting of auspicious ingredients, celebrations in Kochi always feature “Sawachi.” Large plates piled high with all kinds of beautifully presented seasonal dishes prepared with locally produced dishes sourced from the sea and the mountains and local dishes shared by family, friends, and neighbors.

It can take a couple of days to prepare this sumptuous feast ahead of the holidays, but the reward for all this hard work is time, and once everything is done, the whole family can focus on spending quality time with family and friends.

Sawachi is generally a family affair, reserved for special occasions, but you can experience this unique part of Kochi’s culture in a few restaurants at any time of the year. Reservations are usually required, but at Tosa no Kuni Nijuyonmangoku in Kochi City, groups can enjoy authentic Sawachi dishes, and individuals can sample typical dishes without reservation. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate Kochi-style whenever you visit!

Camelia tunnels and natural footbaths at Cape Ashizuri in winter🌺♨️

Dramatic Cape Ashizuri is beautiful at any time of the year, but winter offers a unique scene that cannot be enjoyed at any other time. In February, camellia trees start to come into bloom across Japan, but at Cape Ashizuri, you can walk through a 2-km-long “camellia tunnel.”

Surrounded by red, pink, and white flowers that look gorgeous against the trees’ dark green leaves, these lovely flowers bring a dash of color and a taste of spring to winter days.

Soothe your feet after your walk at the Ashizuri Manjiro Footbath. Here, you can warm up by soaking your feet in a footbath filled with hot water from natural hot springs. The footbaths are inside, so you can shelter from the wind while enjoying the spectacular view of the enormous natural stone arch below and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. What is more, the footbaths are free to use!!

Revived and refreshed, head down to the beach to look at the arch up close. At 16 meters high, Hakusan Cave is said to be Japan's biggest natural granite cave and has long been considered a spiritual power spot. The heart-shaped arch is also visited by many people looking for success on love❤️

Cape Ashizuri is packed with breathtaking scenic spots that can be enjoyed on foot, by car, by bicycle, and even on sightseeing boat tours. Find out more here: https://visitkochijapan.com/en/see-and-do/10033

A Heartwarming Night at the Kochi City Christmas Market!

Kochi City’s third annual Christmas Market started on December 13. This year, the popular event is bigger, with even more stalls to check out while enjoying the Christmas dance, music performances, and other events.

The market centerpiece is a 10-meter-high tower of Christmas lights with about 50 illuminated cords radiating out to cover the entire venue. Interestingly, the cute wooden huts are faithful reproductions of cozy and warm huts found in Stuttgart, Germany. Of course, they will be filled with food and sundries that are uniquely Kochi but appropriate for the season.

Warm up with special mulled wine made with Kochi ginger produced by Yosakoi Winery or with the always popular cocoa or café lattes. In a nod to the market's inspiration, tasty German sausages and pretzels will be on offer, as well as foods made with Kochi’s abundant fresh produce. Also, be sure to look out for Kurunji, crunchy flat Korean croissants—they should be easy to spot, as there is sure to be a long line!

The market runs until Christmas Day, so we hope you will drop by for some Christmas spirit, Kochi style!

Nothing's better on a cold winter's day than a hot Kochi ginger drink☺️

Kochi is the largest producer of ginger in Japan, with about 40% of the national market share. It is known for its red color, punchy aroma, and flavor.

Ginger may not be the prettiest cooking ingredient and is often relegated to a supporting but indispensable role in dishes like Kochi’s soul food, seared bonito. However, ginger comes to the fore in the winter, warming up people across the prefecture on cold winter mornings in the form of piping hot ginger drinks.

Hot Ginger Ale is a favorite of the season at the popular Sunday market held every week in central Kochi City. You will see it at many stores selling the warming drink, made with locally harvested ginger as you walk through the bustling market. Look out for the world’s hottest hot ginger drink - as in spicy hot! Don't worry, there is also a sweet version made with syrup, if you don’t feel up to the challenge🥵

Whichever you choose, ginger is said to promote good circulation, have anti-inflammatory effects, and even boost immunity. Beat the winter chill this year with hot ginger ale!

Geiseimura Takeakarinoyoi Winter Illuminations✨

Geisei Village, on the Pacific coast just east of Kochi City, has hosted a lovely illumination event every autumn for the past 10 years. The event features lanterns crafted from bamboo harvested from abandoned bamboo groves. If you missed this year's festival, don’t worry; they have added a winter edition, starting from December 1 at the Mercure Kochi Tosa Resort and Spa.

Around 200 bamboo lanterns designed by Kumamoto Prefecture’s “CHIKAKEN,” the world's first bamboo lighting production outfit, will create a magical atmosphere in the hotel courtyard and around the pool.

The warm glow and glowing patterns projected through the bamboo lanterns against the pitch-dark night, creating the illusion of a dream world, will surely warm your heart despite the cold.

Geisei Village also has a scenic golf club!

Welcome to the wonderful world of roadside stations 🌰✨

Roadside stations, or Michi no Eki as they are known in Japanese, can be found around Japan, but Kochi has some awesome ones that are loved by tourists and locals alike.

They not only provide clean bathrooms and souvenirs for visitors on long car journeys but also have markets with freshly harvested produce and local specialties, cafes and restaurants where you can sample the local cuisine.

It’s always worth stopping by a Roadside Station to see what is on offer, but some are particularly worth seeking out for their unique offerings.

One of my all-time favorites is Roadside Station Shimanto Towa. Located in the Towa district of Shimanto Town, this roadside station overlooks a gorgeous section of the Shimanto River. It is the perfect place to take a break on a long drive.

In addition to fresh produce, the market and shops serve delicious sweets made from local chestnuts, tea, and ice cream made from ingredients like yuzu and ginger, for which Shimanto and Kochi are famous. If you drop by on Thursday, check out the buffet of homemade dishes created with love by local ladies—don’t miss the "Tataki" deep-fried shiitake mushrooms served with a sweet and tangy sauce!

Perhaps the most unique thing about Roadside Station Shimanto Towa, however, is that it has a zipline!

Sail across the beautiful Shimanto River, 20 meters in the air above it and 220 meters long. It’s a thrill and gives you a view of the river that you can't get from your car window! People of all ages can try the zipline as long as you are at least 120 cm tall and weigh less than 110 kg. (Participation by those under 18 years of age requires parental consent.)

Have you stopped at any memorable Roadside Stations in Japan?

Cooking with Yuzu, Kochi’s star autumn ingredient🍋

Rice vinegar is a staple of Japanese cooking, but did you know that, here in Kochi, we often substitute freshly squeezed yuzu juice (called “yu-no-su”)? If you visit Kochi during the autumn yuzu harvest season, you will see bottles on store shelves and kitchens throughout Kochi Prefecture. You will also, of course, find it in all kinds of local dishes.

One of these dishes is sushi, but perhaps not as you know it. Have you ever heard of “inaka” or countryside sushi? This is sushi without fish, which developed in the forested mountain regions of Kochi, which had limited access to seafood. Inaka-zushi replaces fish with seasonal vegetables such as shiitake mushrooms, konnyaku, myoga, and yam stalks, known as ryukyu. Liberally seasoned with yu-no-su, inaka-zushi has a refreshing, zesty citrus flavor that sparks joy in the mouth✨

Be sure to look out for it at Kochi’s weekly Sunday Market. https://visitkochijapan.com/en/highlights/sundaymarket

While inaka-zushi looks similar to nigiri sushi, with the vegetable toppings placed on top of rice, kokera-zushi is made up of layers pressed in wooden boxes. Made with rice seasoned with yu-no-su, mackerel, egg, and vegetables, kokera-zushi is a colorful local dish representative of Toyo Town in the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture.

Traditionally eaten on special occasions to be shared in large groups, making kokera-zushi with locals on an overnight stay in Toyo is an unforgettable experience.

Look out for yu-no-su flavored dishes when you are in Kochi, and perhaps buy some to take home. We’d love to see what you do with it.

Enjoy the “Kengo Kuma Architecture Experience” in Yusuhara✨

Kengo Kuma is a prolific Japanese architect, perhaps best known for designing the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, and one of the world’s most highly regarded architects.

While there is no official Kengo Kuma theme park, the small mountain town of Yusuhara comes close.

This charming “town in the clouds” of just over 3,000 people is home to the world's largest concentration of Kengo Kuma's architecture. Why, you may well ask?

Kengo Kuma himself describes Yusuhara as his “starting point.” His first encounter with the town was back in 1987 when a group of residents invited him to ask him to help preserve and rebuild the Yusuhara-za, a rustic theater built in 1948.

On agreeing to participate, he was much impressed by the magnificent woodwork of the playhouse. Since then, the architect has been at the helm of creating public buildings that greatly utilize local timber as part of the town’s ongoing revitalization project.

Kengo Kuma projects in Yusuhara include

・Yusuhara Town Office
・Kumo-no-Ue-no Gallery
(The Gallery Above the Clouds)
・Machi-no-Eki Yusuhara
・YURURI Yusuhara (Welfare Facility)
・Kumo-no-Ue-no Library
(The Libary Above the Clouds)
・Kumo-no-Ue-no Hotel
(The Hotel Above the Clouds)
*currently under reconstruction

Kengo Kuma fell in love with Yusuhara, which influenced his move towards natural and warm materials such as wood and cloth that are comforting compared to cold metal or hard concrete. The use of wood also reflects his passion for harmony between people and nature.

Kuma Kengo fans or, indeed, anyone with even a passing interest in architecture should put a visit to Yusuhara on their Japan to-do list✅

🚘 Yusuhara is about 1 hr 15 min drive from Susaki-chuo IC on the Kochi Expressway

Happy birthday to Kochi's samurai hero🎉

Have you ever heard of Ryoma Sakamoto? This heroic samurai is one of Japan’s favorite historical figures and is particularly well-loved here in Kochi, where he was born on November 15th, 189 years ago.

Born into a samurai family, he was a master of the sword and a charismatic leader who helped usher in Japan's modernization era in the late 19th century. Unfortunately, he was assassinated at the young age of 33, but respect and admiration for him live on to this day. You will find statues and images of the handsome Ryoma Sakamoto, dressed in traditional dress and, famously, Western-style boots, all around Kochi.

A festival celebrating Ryoma's birthday is held in his hometown of Kochi City. You can watch vibrant Yosakoi Naruko dance performances and a birthday cake lighting ceremony in the shopping district. On November 17, a Ryoma Festival is held at pretty Katsurahama Beach, 40 minutes by bus from Kochi Station. A favorite place of Ryoma Sakamoto, you will also find a 13.5-meter-high statue of him overlooking the Pacific Ocean here. Note the statue’s determined expression, and you enjoy the magnificent view as Ryoma did (and still does).

Learn more about Ryoma Sakamoto's life and times at the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum, near the statue and featuring multilingual displays.

Enjoy Monet's Garden illuminated by colorful lights🌈✨

Every weekend and national holiday between November 2 and December 8, Monet's Garden Marmottan opens after dark and is bathed in beautiful colored lights. The theme of this year’s Night Canvas of Monet event is “Twilight Resonance,” and the transition from fall to winter will be expressed through light art.

As a bonus, the autumn leaves usually reach their peak around the end of November, so visitors will be able to experience the garden’s fall foliage🍁

If you can make it on November 9 or 23, you can also catch a pretty fireworks display. On these days, bus tours from Kochi City are available through Tosaden Travel and the cafe and restaurant will stay open after dark. It should be a lovely way to spend an evening✨

Monet's Garden Marmottan closes for maintenance from December (except the first two weekends) until late February, so “Twilight Resonance” will likely be your last opportunity to visit this gorgeous garden in 2024.

Fragrant Yuzu and retro railways in the mountain village of Umaji🍋🚂

Although it is less than two hours by car from Kochi City, arriving in Umaji Village is like stepping back in time. 30 km from the nearest city, you won’t find any convenience stores and few streetlights in this little community of around 800 people who live in the 4% of the village that isn’t covered in forest🌿

The village once thrived through forestry, supplying lumber far and wide, but today, it is best known for its delicious and fragrant organic Yuzu citrus fruit🍋🍋

November is harvest time, and one of the best ways to enjoy nature and Yuzu-scented air is to ride the forestry railroad. It is a wonderfully retro experience and provides a glimpse of life in days gone by when the trains carried their nationally acclaimed Yanase cedar wood rather than tourists🚂

Be sure not to miss the view from the top of the 92.3-meter Umaji Incline funicular railway, powered purely by water and gravity!

Sunflowers in Autumn? Yes, Please!🌻

Tosa City is one of Japan’s sunniest spots, and from late October to early November, you can witness the rare sight of sunflowers blooming in autumn☀️

A residents' association has been delighting locals and visiting flower lovers by planting local fields with sunflowers every year for the past 20 years. It is no small production, with around 300,000 flowers this year🌻🌻

These later-blooming sunflowers are shorter than the summer sunflowers you might be familiar with, giving them an extra touch of cuteness. The flowers start to appear at the end of October, making now a perfect time to visit😊

Welcome to the fragrant world of yuzu (and no, it's not a lemon!)

Yuzu is often mistaken for a lemon, but the taste, aroma, and even the environment in which it grows are completely different. While most citrus fruits thrive in warm coastal areas, yuzu flourishes in the chilly mountains of Japan.

Did you know that Kochi Prefecture is Japan’s number one producer of yuzu?

The Chugei region in eastern Kochi is especially famous for its yuzu production, and when you visit its small rural villages, you'll be greeted by the delightful scent of yuzu wafting through the air.

In May, the trees bloom with adorable white flowers (yes, even the flowers have a refreshing citrus scent!), and by November, it's finally harvest season. Farmers are hard at work gathering the bumpy, yellow fruit, which they then turn into delicious jams or toss into a relaxing yuzu bath.

That’s right! In Japan, it's a long-standing tradition to soak in yuzu baths. The oils in yuzu, including one called nomilin, are said to promote relaxation and improve circulation—perfect for warming up on those chilly winter days.

If you find yourself in Kochi in November, why not swing by the Chugei area? One of its hidden gems is Umaji Village. With a population of just 800, this small village harvests an impressive 800 tons of yuzu each year!

You can enjoy yuzu-inspired dishes, and shop for unique souvenirs like yuzu-infused jams, jellies, and even cosmetics like hand creams made with yuzu oil.

Come explore, indulge in the flavors, and take a piece of this charming village home with you!

🚌
Umaji Village is about 2 hours from Kochi City by public transport

🍋
Yuzu is also, of course, a favorite ingredient of chefs around the world, and we will be posting about a local yuzu dish in November, but in the meantime, learn more about Yuzu here😊

Autumn, the perfect season for the Shikoku Pilgrimage🍁

The Shikoku Pilgrimage, a 1,400-km journey that takes in 88 Buddhist temples, is one of the world’s great pilgrimages, attracting people from around the world. The foliage along the route is beautiful, and comfortable temperatures make it an ideal time to walk🍁

Walking the entire pilgrimage takes at least a month, but many people cover the route in sections, sometimes taking months or even years to complete. Sixteen of the pilgrimage’s temples are in Kochi, known as the “ascetic training” section of the route. It can be challenging, but it is a great way to see some of Kochi’s most spectacular scenery⛰

Even if you only have a day or two, a great way to get a flavor of the pilgrimage is to visit Chikurin-ji Temple, which is easily accessible using the My-Yu Bus from Kochi City and is particularly pretty in autumn.

The path up to the temple takes you past moss-covered rocks, bringing you to the breathtaking sight of the temple’s vermilion five-story pagoda framed by the gorgeous red leaves of magnificent maple trees. Be sure also to take the opportunity to spend some time in quiet appreciation of the majestic view from the veranda that overlooks the 14th-century Japanese garden. Enhance your experience further by joining one of the meditation or sutra-copying sessions offered by the temple🧘‍♂️

A visit to Chikurin-ji Temple is excellent for the soul at any time of the year, but seeing it fringed with red, yellow, and gold leaves in the fresh autumn breeze cannot fail to fill you with gratitude and is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences during your time in Japan😊

🍁The autumn colors at Chikurin-ji Temple are at their best in November.

Take a stroll above the clouds on a 1,400m high plateau⛰

One of Japan’s three most extensive karst lands is in Shikoku's center on the northern edge of Kochi Prefecture. Located at over 1,400m above sea level, the Tengu Highlands is one of the best places in the prefecture to view autumn colors; its abundant tree species resplendent in the bright colors of fall.

The “Therapy Road” walking trail is a well-maintained path surrounded by forest. The soft cypress wood chips with which it is paved are not only easy on the legs, they also give the air a refreshing aroma. Walking between the trees, listening to the sound of birds chirping and insects singing, is, as the name suggests, wonderfully therapeutic and serves to revive both body and spirit!

With several courses of varying lengths and difficulty to choose from, people of all fitness levels can enjoy this lovely walking area👍

The high elevation does mean that the air can get chilly even in the fall, so remember to bring a warm jacket!
