Knick Natts

Knick Natts Handmade Ceramics and Other Crafts Made in Monrovia, CA I make a variety of pieces, just for the joy and fun of it. I dabble in many forms of arts and crafts.

Apologies for leaving my Etsy shop empty — I’m mainly selling pieces in-person at the occasional art show. But if you see something you like that I didn’t explicitly mark as a commission, feel free to message me to see if we can work something out

My path to pottery:
While taking a too-short semester of sculpting in college, I fell in love with ceramics. In 2013, I was lucky enough to discover

a local studio (in Monrovia, CA) where I could play with clay all day (clearly, I am not a poet.) I like to combine wheel-throwing with hand-building. I have a love for whimsy and animals that shows through my work. I get inspiration from "Teh Internets", from friends and family, and occasionally from my own random brain. My hobbies of SCUBA diving and rock-climbing also influence my work.

Class is cancelled tonight due to a power outage… womp womp. 😞 I guess we have to wait to see what I got out of the kiln, so here’s a timelapse of me throwing a medium-sized bowl from a couple of weekends ago ✌️

I threw a French butter keeper! Or maybe just a regular butter keeper, not sure what makes it French. 😅 It’s a two-parter: a cylindrical base and a lid with an upside-down cup that has to fit inside, so there was a lot of measuring and tweaking (most of which I cut out). I trimmed a gallery in the lid, later, so it fits precisely(ish) — thanks to helpful videos by 🙏

The butter goes in the cup, and water in the base keeps it from going rancid, so you can have room-temperature (spreadable) butter at all times 🙌

Added a k**b to this lid in the jankiest possible way while trying to avoid an errant beam of sunlight coming in through the garage door windows 😂 … then I trimmed it to refine the profile a little. Hope this fits in gallery of my fermentation crock v.2!

Trying different styles of sake bottles… not sure I like any of these 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

It makes me happy when my friends’ kids also enjoy using ! This sea turtle mug is OG, before I had a logo, maybe from 2014 or 2015? Glad to see it still in use! (Shared with permission)

Forgot to post this set of pieces that was commissioned by a friend as a housewarming gift. Matching soap dispenser, utensil holder, berry bowl, and large fruit bowl. Pretty stoked with how they all came out — I used underglaze transfers, wax resist, and LB blue + G2B glazes. 🙌

What a load of crock! My lid experienced a mishap -- parts of it stuck to the kiln shelf, causing a few broken hearts -- err, pieces. 😭 Luckily, Kae saved the wayward pieces and I was able to repair the lid with E6000 glue. It's not flawless, but it should serve the function of sitting in the "moat" (gallery filled with water) and allowing CO2 to bubble out of the fermenting veggies while keeping mold and flies and other nasties from getting inside. That's the hope, anyway! 🤞
Enough yammering, here are a ton of pics, because I'm still quite proud of this piece. Once I'm feeling 💯 again, I plan to make more — it’s very good practice. Just gotta remember to put alumina hydrate on the bottom of all of my pieces moving forward. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I made hand-poured soy candles with some smaller vessels and they smell pretty good — lavender for a few and spiced vanilla for the rest. The surfaces aren’t perfect because I got impatient and probably poured too quickly and at the wrong temperature, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Snowflake ❄️ mug success! I used vinyl resist and water-etching techniques and glazed it with Santa Fe Blue with a touch of Sun Valley on the rim. A bit of glaze seems to have crawled (jumped, really) at the top of the pointy snowflake, but that’s part of the handmade charm, right? 😜 Now I just need some hot chocolate and marshmallows. 🎉

“Making-of” video of the salt cellars (also called salt pigs) I posted yesterday, as promised! Instead of trimming a foot like I would normally, I made these babies as round as possible. Then I had to smack them around, to create a flattened bottom. You’ll notice I have 5 of them in this video, but only posted 4… that’s because I got too aggressive with the smacking and broke one… 🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Salt cellars, fresh from the kiln! These are meant to be kept next to the stove, so you can easily grab a pinch of salt while you’re cooking. I left the interiors unglazed to help keep the salt from clumping (the bare clay should absorb moisture). They sit at an angle to prevent dust from getting inside, and were fun to make — “making of” video to follow!
These and most of the pieces in my previous post are still available for local pickup in east LA — send me a DM if you’re interested in procuring holiday gifts that are NOT stuck on a shipping container! 😜🛳

Here's a much longer video of (some of) the process of making a fermentation crock. This was my second attempt, and it went well! I used reclaimed clay because it is softer and therefore easier to center, as I'm used to working with smaller chunks of clay. I had to wedge the heck out of it -- free workout? 😜 Once I successfully threw the body of the crock, I measured the size of the gallery and threw a lid to fit. I added a handle to that after I trimmed it (not shown). I also made a weight to fit inside the jar (also not shown).
Fingers crossed that the rest of the process (firing, glazing, second firing) goes well! The idea is to fill the gallery with water, which theoretically provides an airtight seal when the lid is on. 🤞

A friend commissioned me to make a fermentation crock for making kimchi. I told her I was up for the challenge 😅 and my first attempt went well… until it didn’t. 😂😩 I slowed down the bit where I effed up after 25 minutes of work, so you can watch my heart break, just a little. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I cut it in half at the end, to check for uniform wall thickness, since it wasn’t salvageable, anyway. 🤙

I think this was the largest chunk of clay I’ve centered in forever (or ever??) and I am grateful for the practice. That rim is tricky! Oh well, off to re-watch instructional videos by before I try again!
