in 1942, entertainment legend Wayne Newton was born. "Mr. Las Vegas" began performing at the Fremont Hotel as a teenager, doing six shows per night. His career skyrocketed and he was, at one point, the highest-paid performer in the city. In 1980, NBC News claimed that, as the co-owner of the Aladdin hotel and casino, Newton was a front man for the Mob and possibly even a government informant. Newton admitted to knowing Guido “The Bull” Penosi of the Gambino crime family, but denied knowing he was a mobster. Worried about his reputation and safety, Newton sued the news network for defamation. Although he won the case, an appeals court later overturned it. He has performed more than 50,000 shows in Las Vegas and beyond and now has a residency at Caesars Palace, delighting audiences with his biggest hits and stories from his life.
