It’s summer and that means flags! We are so excited to carry on the tradition of flying the flag of the San Silvestro district of Chiusi outside of our new studio in the historic heart of the town. A flag has been raised here for hundreds of years and we are honoured to continue that tradition. All around us the local hilltop towns are flying their flags and the flag rivalry has begun. Some prime examples from our near neighbour Citta della Pieve. Come on Chiusi get your flags out!!This year alongside running our usual in person art retreats from the lovely studio at Siliano Alto, where we have been based for the last 14 years, we have also taken on an exciting side project! We are renovating this beautiful old cantina in the centre of the historic Etruscan city of Chiusi with the intention of turning it into a new studio, workshop and gallery space in the heart of this stunning Tuscan hill town. Some of you who have stayed with us will remember that we are right on the border between Tuscany and Umbria. You might remember two ancient border towers. During the last few days our lovely neighbours at Vivai Margheriti (the plant nursery) have been doing a clear up of the Umbrian Tower that had become very overgrown. They have cleared away lots of the dead trees and undergrowth and the old tower or ‘torre’ is beginning to look amazing! What a wonderful start to the New Year!

Throw back to last Sunday. The first Sunday in every month is reserved for the Arezzo antiques market. A glorious mayhem of tat and tawdry, junk and antiquities. It’s a wonderful day out full of wonder and inspiration and we always try and visit if we can. There’s just so much to see in this classy little town. It was recently voted one of the best places to live in Italy and it’s easy to see why. It’s packed with Renaissance goodies like Vasari’s magnificent loggia where many of the traders pitch their stalls. The Piazza Grande itself is a montage of Renaissance and Romanesque architecture, in mellow hues of old stone and crumbling stucco, which makes the perfect backdrop for the monthly ‘Fiera Antiquaria’ and it’s glorious array of fantastic furniture and coveted curios.

This lovely line drawing is a painting progress. The great thing about one of our 10 day courses in Tuscany is the opportunity to forget about ‘normal life’ and immerse yourself in professional studio/based practice. It’s a time when you can choose to concentrate on refining skills and techniques maybe coming with a project already in mind. Or you can use the time to experiment with different mediums and let inspiration take you where it will. Either way 10 days is a perfect amount of time to really get stuck in and produce a body of art work to be proud of.
