Happy Chinese New Year of the Dragon! Having done my research, I touched on all the elements of prosperity, health, happiness, longevity, unity with the following homemade dishes: Pearl Balls, Shrimp Spring Rolls and Lunar New Year Dumplings as appetizers followed by Three Cup Chicken served over Longevity Noodles. Chinese steamed fish with Ginger Shallot sauce and Prosperity Salad. The feast capped by Steamed Chinese New Year Cake. So much work but so yummy!

Honouring Nonna with her Spaghetti Bolognese sauce and Margherita Pizza Mushrooms. Eggplant Parmesan and Kale Ceasar for a special birthday and Grizzled Za’atar flatbread and spinach ricotta rolls, Loaded Jacket Potatoes ( not shown) as part of Guy Fawkes Day. 🍷

Celebrating Bastille Day (July 14) with my son and daughter-in-law and the regular Sunday dinner friends. Appetizers Pate de Campagne, White Bean Tapenade, Classic Gougeres, followed by Tomatoes a la Provençal’s on a bed of Haricots Verts Lyonnaise and Julia Child’s Coq au Vin. A Classic Chocolate Mousse and chocolate fudge birthday cake for dessert. Especially yummy with Moët et Chandon Champagne!! 🇫🇷

Argentina’s Day if Independence on July 9. Perfect for foodies and carnivores in particular. Salsa Criolla and Provoleta on crostini, authentic Chimichurri with the national dish of Argentina, Asado, and roasted potatoes. A simple green salad was an excellent side dish. And what Argentinian dinner would it be without Alfajor Cupcakes, a sweet tooth delight. Argentinian wines were of course featured, starting with Susan Balbo’s Torrentes with the appetizers.
Canada Day celebrations. Food diversity across the country. Appetizers representing Ontario, Saskatchewan and BC. Steelhead trout yum. Colcannon from Nfld and Pork Medallions with Blueberry Sauce from Manitoba. And of course a sugar pie not quite authentic but close enough from Quebec. So many good canadian wines such as 2020 Pink Slip rose VQA Niagara and 2021 Strewn barrel aged Chardonnay. Note that I posted indigenous food last week. 🇨🇦
I’m honour of Indigenous month, the summer solstice and a visit with my bff from Montreal, an eclectic meal of: traditional 2 ingredient Corn Patties, ( Turtle Island) served with unique spicy Guacamole. Tahblik (marsanne grape) white wine, Corn, Blueberry and Wild Rice Salad with Carl’s Jerk Chicken served with Original G 2020 German Riesling and Wojapi (Dakota Berry Sauce) over strawberries with Whipping Cream, made more enjoyable with Susana Balbo 2022 Crios, a Rose (pronounced rosay ) of Malbec.
June 11 was the Hawaiian celebration of King Kamehameha who in 1810 united the Islands into one royal kingdom after years of conflict. So we had to mark the occasion with the right menu. Pineapple, coconut, apple cider vinegar and macademia nuts are a common thread. Simple to prepare and simply delicious. Not shown Hawaiian-style Meatballs as an appetizer, followed by skewers of Hawaiian Shrimp (allrecipes.com) served with Sweet and Sour Sauce ( Serious Eats) and coconut rice dressed with avocado and a side of Hawaiian Coleslaw (Janice-Salads for Lunch). I found a luau dessert also on Allrecipes, Hawaiian coconut pudding but was not that happy with the final consistency. Not “pudding” like enough. For wine pairings, check out .

Chinese New Year dinner. Potstickers and Egg-rolls from Costco. Shown home made Kung Pao shrimp, dried green beans and Chinese rice. A special Prosecco was perfect to offset the spices and umami of these Szechuan dishes. Not shown but amazing is Szechuan Soup. 🍜 🍤
