If you’d like to be part of the light parade in Canterbury there are craft workshops this weekend at The Beaney. See the OP for all the details…
🏮✨ * NEW WORKSHOP SPACES ADDED! * Create your own lantern and be part of Canterbury’s Christmas Light Parade this year! Join artist Becky Vincer at one of two free, family-friendly workshops on Saturday 9 November at The Beaney in the High Street.
✂️ At the workshop you’ll create a festive lantern using withy (flexible bamboo), tissue paper, and PVA glue. The sessions are suitable for families with children aged 7 and above, and you can create one or more lanterns together during the 1.5-hour session.
🌟 The following week it’s your time to shine! Bring your lanterns to Tower House, Westgate Gardens, CT1 2DB on Friday 15 November, 5.30pm, to collect an LED light and join the parade as a family alongside local schools and giant lanterns made by the college.
🎄 The parade will leave Tower House at 6pm, travel up along the High St, and enter Canterbury Cathedral Precincts for the special moment the city lights are switched on. After this, you can enjoy the festive market and take your lantern home! 💖
Spaces for these workshops are limited and must be booked in advance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

A big Thank you and well done to City Wall Wine Bar Rochester for an amazing Halloween party. I didn’t get any pictures as there were lots of people. But it was great to see all the staff get dressed up and look after all the younger guests. My youngest has asked if she can come back next time.
After lots of boogying and candy floss we headed for Rochester Cathedral to complete the Cathedral Mouse trail (free). I love wandering around the Cathedral and just taking it all in. My daughter raced around trying to find all the mice, then settled down in the crypt to play with the large Noah’s Ark, while I had a drink and slice of cake.
Off to the library afterwards to find some new books to enjoy, and more hot chocolate and cake at the kids kitchen (imaginary of course).
Just to top it off when we got home the eldest had made cherry and cranberry scones! Yum!

With the weather being so wet, we were reminded of our visit to Victoria Park and the deluge we got caught in!
It was a beautiful park with lots of great equipment. There’s a cafe and public toilets right next to the play area. There’s also a changing places here for those who might need it. The park is extensive and has some formal gardens, meadows, a large ornamental fountain and a pump track and road layout for cycling/scooting practice. Paved paths throughout for easy access.
Parking here is free and dogs are welcome. The park has no fencing around it, so please ensure dogs are on a lead when moving around the play area, for the comfort of everyone.
Lots of picnic tables and some with metal stands for BBQs!

Our Story
Just Add A Picnic was conceived from two places. Firstly, we as parents were getting bored of visiting the same parks again and again. Finding new places to visit was tricky, we didn’t know that many people or the area we lived in very well. The websites we tried only promoted pay-to-enter attractions or gave very little information about free places to visit. Secondly, we had a horrendous day out at an expensive attraction. It was so disappointing and we just felt robbed and trapped the whole day.
We felt there must be a better way of enjoying time with our growing family. Why wasn’t there information on places where you can go and just add a picnic? Having fun with your family shouldn’t cost a small fortune.
Encouraged by my husband I began to learn how to write websites and in 2015 the first iteration of justaddapicnic.com was tentatively put out onto the internet. It wasn’t great, and was awkward to navigate, but it was a start. In January 2018 after some training and a confidence boost with Mum’s in Tech we relaunched the website, it had about 20 locations and a new search facility. Throughout the Spring of 2018 I continued to add content and eventually got to a point where I felt the website was useful to other families. @JustAddAPicnic joined Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, in Summer 2018, to help promote the website and engage more people. Social media then gave us another avenue to promote, free events! This summer we have promoted activities in local country parks, council run festivals and museum family events. All of them free to enter and enjoy with your family and picnic.
In September 2018, after some work with a graphic designer, we changed the logo and look of the website and social media platforms, bringing them all together with our new brand. T-shirts were printed and we were now visible at the events we attended.
We have lots of ideas for the future and ways to help JustAddAPicnic grow. If you’d like to be a part of that, share Just Add A Picnic with your family, friends and colleagues. Share places you’ve visited and just added a picnic with us on social media using #justaddapicnic or @justaddapicnic. We love learning about new free places to explore.
