Pride Canterbury this weekend, make use of the Park and Ride facilities around Canterbury or catch a train in to one of the 2 stations which are both within walking distance of the city centre.

Only one more day until Pride Canterbury 🌈

A few tips to make sure you have the best Pride possible:

🚘 Park and Pride

The city is bound to be busy with people travelling in for the celebrations, but you can save money and help reduce congestion by parking at one of our three Park and Ride sites for just ÂŁ4 for the entire day. Plus, residents signed up to the resident rate permit can park for just ÂŁ3.20!

🎊 Head to the high street for a peek at the parade

Line the city's high street for the best views of the parade. You'll find us waving our flags as part of the procession, which will start at 11am at Westgate Gardens and end at Dane John Gardens where you'll be able to queue to enter the event.

☀ Prepare for fun in the sun

It looks like the sun will be making an appearance again this year, so remember to bring plenty of sun protection and an empty water bottle to fill up at one of the water stations in Dane John Gardens.

Visit the link in the comments to find out more about what to expect at the event.

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about windmills, it’s National windmill Weekend this weekend. See below details of two Kent windmills which will be opening their doors for you to enjoy.

It's a fabulous weekend for windmill lovers: many are opening their doors for National Windmill Weekend.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings highlight two in Kent, well worth a visit:

🌟Willesborough Windmill, Kent

Visit this working windmill for a guided tour to learn how the mill works and see the millers’ kitchen and parlour, as well as a collection of milling and agricultural artifacts. Children can have a go at making some flour using quern stones and there’s a tearoom, too.

Open Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, 2-5pm with the last tour at 4pm. Adults ÂŁ5, children ÂŁ2.50.

🌟White Mill, Sandwich, Kent

This is a great time to explore White Mill as it’s undergoing extensive renovation to return the mill to working order. Visit to see the progress, talk to the skilled volunteers, and explore the fascinating Rural Heritage Museum. The gardens and barn will host craft stalls, food stalls and entertainment over the whole weekend, making this a fun family day out.

Open Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, 10am - 4pm. Free entry.

Don't forget to post your windmill weekend pics below! 👇

Lovely visit to the Conservatory at Barbican Centre in London on Saturday. This little gem is free to enter and enjoy, you just need to book a time slot using their website (we booked on the day).

The conservatory takes about 30 minutes to walk around, longer if you’ve got people with you who are interested in the botany, fish or terrapins, or those who like to sit and draw or photograph these beautiful plants in their concrete and glass surroundings.

There are a couple of art galleries at the Barbican center which are free to visit too, some you have to pay to enjoy (check out their listings before you visit). The terrace and outdoor space is beautiful in a 1960s brutalist way, and a lovely spot to enjoy a treat from one of the many kiosks or restaurants. Ibrahim Mahama’s Purple Hibiscus was quite something to see too!

Our Story

Just Add A Picnic was conceived from two places. Firstly, we as parents were getting bored of visiting the same parks again and again. Finding new places to visit was tricky, we didn’t know that many people or the area we lived in very well. The websites we tried only promoted pay-to-enter attractions or gave very little information about free places to visit. Secondly, we had a horrendous day out at an expensive attraction. It was so disappointing and we just felt robbed and trapped the whole day.

We felt there must be a better way of enjoying time with our growing family. Why wasn’t there information on places where you can go and just add a picnic? Having fun with your family shouldn’t cost a small fortune.

Encouraged by my husband I began to learn how to write websites and in 2015 the first iteration of justaddapicnic.com was tentatively put out onto the internet. It wasn’t great, and was awkward to navigate, but it was a start. In January 2018 after some training and a confidence boost with Mum’s in Tech we relaunched the website, it had about 20 locations and a new search facility. Throughout the Spring of 2018 I continued to add content and eventually got to a point where I felt the website was useful to other families. @JustAddAPicnic joined Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, in Summer 2018, to help promote the website and engage more people. Social media then gave us another avenue to promote, free events! This summer we have promoted activities in local country parks, council run festivals and museum family events. All of them free to enter and enjoy with your family and picnic.

In September 2018, after some work with a graphic designer, we changed the logo and look of the website and social media platforms, bringing them all together with our new brand. T-shirts were printed and we were now visible at the events we attended.
