If you’re in the Netherlands this time of year, make it a point to try pepernoten. 🍪 These small, spiced cookies are a holiday favorite, traditionally enjoyed during Sinterklaas (the Dutch celebration of St. Nicholas), and throughout the holiday season.

Pepernoten are made with warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger, and are the quintessential Dutch holiday cookie.

You’ll often see them handed out by Piet aka, St. Nicholas’ helper, or sold in festive bags at bakeries and supermarkets.

Pro tip: Pair them with a warm cup of coffee, tea or Dutch hot chocolate.

Ever tried pepernoten or spent the holidays in the Netherlands?

You can find Christmas markets all over Europe, and a particularly excellent one is in Bordeaux, France. The market is a foodie heaven showcasing the traditional festive foods from eastern France while also delivering on the best of local terroir.

Our local guide Joshua took us around the market to show us mouthwatering local bites like goats cheese from the Pyrenees, spiced hot wine made from biodynamic Bordeaux wine, and Accra made with duck confit!

Where’s your favorite Christmas market in Europe?

That’s why we’ve launched dedicated pages where you can enjoy all things Italy 24/7. Follow along for incredible Italy content, and help us spread the word!

If you could only pick one Spanish holiday sweet, what would it be?

🍫 Turrón: The ultimate Christmas classic. These days you can find pretty much any flavor like chocolate, coffee, or even strawberry cheesecake (🍓!). The biggest question of all comes down to choosing hard Alicante turrón or the soft Jijona turrón.

🍰 Roscón de Reyes: You can’t celebrate the holidays in Spain without a Kings’ Cake. This ring-shaped cake is a delicious and symbolic way to kick off the new year and celebrate Epiphany.

🍬 Polvorones: The crumbly, powdery, melt-in-your-mouth Spanish Christmas cookies that come from Southern Spain (in Estepa, to be exact). Just like turrón, they come in many flavors and varieties.

In your opinion, what’s the best Spanish Christmas treat?

10/12/2024

The term “polvorón" comes from polvo, the Spanish word for dust, from the action of crumbling into powder when eating them.

In the Estepa region of Andalusia, oaks abounded in its forests. Because of this, it is very common to raise pigs in the area. To take advantage of the leftover lard, it was common, already in the sixteenth century, to make pastries with it.

The Clarisan nuns of Estepa were the guardians of this ancestral recipe, keeping alive the tradition of making polvorones for centuries. These nuns, with their experience in pastry and their devotion to quality, contributed significantly to the evolution and diffusion of this delicacy.

Polvorones are popular holiday delicacies in all of Spain, Hispanic America, the Philippines, and other Spanish-influenced countries around the world. There is a version in the USA Sometimes called Pan de Polvo, that is made with anise in the south Texas region.

You can find the best artisanal polvorones in Barcelona in La Campana 1890. They are in the 4th generation of the family doing artisanal nougat and polvorones and have sold them out of season from the start.

Their polvorones have also won the Brussels Superior Taste Award for the years 2022 and 2023.

One of Spain’s most beloved Christmas treats? Turrón! 🍬

Today, our culinary chef Andrea show you just how easy it is to make this holiday classic.

While turrón comes in many flavors and varieties, today we’re making turrón de Jijona—a soft, melt-in-your-mouth nougat made with ground almonds, honey, and egg white.

Fun fact: it’s named after the town of Jijona in Alicante, where it all started. Now, it’s a staple on holiday tables across Spain.

Have you ever tried turrón?

Fun fact: Did you know persimmon seeds have been used to predict winter weather? 🌱 According to folklore, cutting open a seed reveals a kernel shaped like a spoon, fork, or knife—each symbolizing a different forecast.

🥄 A spoon means heavy snow is on the way,
🍴 A fork predicts a mild winter with light snow
🔪 A knife means icy winds are coming—and they'll "cut" right through you

Persimmons, (aka kaki or caqui), are a winter favorite in Mediterranean countries like Italy and Spain. There are over 2,000 (!) varieties. Some are soft, juicy, and easy to eat, like a peach, while others are firmer, resembling an apple. They're packed with vitamins and the perfect winter fruit. Have you ever tried one? 🍊

A spritz is the quintessential drink to have when you’re in Italy. Here are some keys things to know about the country’s famous drink:

🔸The spritz dates back to the late 1800s. The story goes that Austrian soldiers stationed in northern Italy found the local wine too strong, so they’d add a splash, or ‘spritz,’ of water to lighten it. Italians soon adopted the idea, adding bitters to create the beloved spritz people enjoy today.

🔸The perfect spritz is all about balance. For a classic recipe, mix 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol or Campari, and 1 part soda water. Pour it over ice, garnish with an orange slice, and enjoy!

🔸While the Aperol and Campari spritzes are timeless, there are plenty of other variations now a day (especially depending on the region you’re in Keep an eye out for Select in Rome and Cynar in Venice). Locals usually prefer the classic flavors, but these days people are buzzing about Hugo spritz with elderflower liqueur or even a Limoncello spritz.

🔸Take note that most of the classic variations are not sweet, but are quite bitter! (Despite their deceiving appearance)

🔸In Italy, aperitivo is more than just a moment to eat and drink—it’s like a ritual. Aperitivo time is usually around 5 to 8 PM, and is the perfect way to wind down the day and enjoy the early evening with friends.

🔸No aperitivo is complete without snacks. Italians pair their spritz with things like cicchetti (little sandwiches from Venice), focaccia, olives, cheese, or even a slice of pizza. Sky’s the limit, though!

🔸 One of the joys of Italy is strolling with a drink in hand. Thanks to relaxed open container laws, you can enjoy a spritz (or beer, or other cocktail) as you explore.

🔸These days there are plenty of places to pick up a spritz in a can or bottle. You’ll find different brands at most supermarkets, convince stores or bottle shops. A little taste of Italy on the go!

🔸 Bringing home a bottle of Aperol or Campari is a perfect little gift for yourself or others.

Are you a fan of the ? Cheers!

In Greenwich Village, locals still shop at mom-and-pop food artisan shops like Raffetto's.

Our local guide Brian introduces us to the fourth-generation owner Sarah as she shows off their fancy guillotine machine that cuts the fresh pasta to order based on your cooking needs.

He also enjoys their classic ravioli, one of the tastes on our Greenwich Village food tour ➡️ https://devourtours.com/tours/new-york-city-greenwich-village/

Since the beginning, our mission was simple: to connect curious travelers with local food and people in a way that helps culture thrive.

Why? Because our cities are changing at an alarming rate. We’re seeing them blend together as family-run businesses and iconic places continue to disappear. And with them we lose the stories, recipes and soul that makes each place unique.

Travel is about immersing yourself in local culture. And there’s no better way to do that than through food! Food brings people together, no matter where you’re from or what language you speak.

We crave food and travel experiences with a true sense of place. We fear a world where you can’t tell the difference between Paris and Barcelona. Our hearts jump at the adventure of a tapas crawl in historic Madrid, and at our first taste of a Parisian baguette. These are the moments we feel truly connected to the soul of a destination, and not a watered-down version of it. You can find all of our food tours and destinations at https://devourtours.com/ Come and join us!
