Lake Conroe Crappie - Hooker Harwell's Guide Service Lake Conroe's PREMIER Night Time Guide Service My name is Bill “Ho**er” Harwell, a lifelong fisherman on many venues, I have embraced two irrefutable facts.
(152)

The best time to go fishing is when you can, and safety always comes first. I have been fishing Lake Conroe since 1995, professionally since 2009. It’s a great lake with many excellent angling opportunities for a variety of species. Crappie are always at the top of my list. I am deeply dedicated to my pursuit of them and have put forth countless efforts in the context of brush piles, spawning stru

ctures, timing, also including attracting techniques and bait catching and other tricks. I am the only guide I know of who fishes at night predominantly and I do so often in my pursuit of Crappie. Turn key full service trips . I supply everything and clean the fish. Solid equipment , custom built boats, organized and professional. I offer a variety of trips and services from serious fishing to parties and picnics. Discounts for public service and birthdays.

So I did a thang yesterday . Last time I had Jeff and Amy out he told me he had a bunch of good wood on the ground and I was welcome to whatever I needed. He very graciously even had his guys hold the logs over the trailer with the tractor for me to make it easier for me to buck them and help keep the saw out of the dirt. This is all the really good post oak and almost all heartwood at that . Most any oak is good bbq but post oak is supreme. That's more than enough to fill my rack and then some! Thanks Jeff! You're all aces bud! We'll get together when it cools off some and go get some crappie!

So I just noticed this a little bit ago. It happened last night at the boat ramp while I was out on my trip. Vince at stowe away is doing a little more research looking at the cameras to see if he can get a license plate number. He saw on cameras that it happened around 10 last night. Ya know I know my rig is a really long one and we purposely park way up out of the way to make things convenient for other folks and avoid this kind of thing. I guess to exhibit a little cuth, common sense or accountability is too much to ask out of some people these days. Whoever did it knew they did it because they had to back up significantly to get unhung from my trucks bumper . It obviously stopped them and there's no way they couldn't know. No note . No notifying the marina as far as we know as of yet . Instead of backing out of where they were parked like anyone with any common sense would do they just pulled forward out of laziness because nobody was parked in front of them , didn't swing wide enough and drug their trailer all the way down the side of my rig. I understand accidents happen . I also drove big trucks for a significant part of my life and have probably driven more miles in reverse as many have driven in forward so I know this was a complete bonehead move on their part. I hope we're able to get a license plate for their sake so their insurance can take care of the damages because when people act like a little s**t I'm kinda prone to teach them the lesson their daddy didn't . Maybe I was raised wrong but I was taught that one pays for their mistakes and to admit you've made one and take responsibility for it shows not only integrity but respect for others and their property that is expensive and they've probably worked hard for . If it were me that did this to someone else I wouldn't be able to sleep until this was resolved or at least in the process. I probably wouldn't have left the ramp with just a note either. I would have waited for them to return and face them myself not only to explain and apologize but to give all relevant information necessary to resolve the issue but that's just me . I really hope I can find the feller. All ya'll that really know me know I'm One of the 2% that live and die by the bite and my ability to get folks on one as a fisherman. Every victory I have is awfully hard won and every failure I pay for with blood sweat and tears . I don't play games with folks time or money because I know how hard it's always been to earn mine . Its really hard to make a truly honest living at this but ive been doing it for almost 17 yrs now and there's no quit in my s**t. These aren't hits I can just absorb. Sure I have full coverage ins but ya know that's gonna go up if my insurance covers this . It's already tough enough these days where everyone with a scope and a day off from their regular job is a guide without all this kind of crap . I'm going to stop complaining now but this is just fu**ed up . Please pardon my French folks. I'm seriously considering taking the rest of Aug and part of Sept as a sabbatical. I'm not a rich man by any measures except for I control my own destiny in every sense of the word . My truck is going to need repair. The last couple trips I've lost more bait to acclimating than I care to admit no matter how good it looked in my tanks initially and may have just as well wiped my ass with that money. I need to finish remodeling the bathroom for my wife . She works so hard for us and more than deserves every effort I can make to make her dreams of a beautiful home come true . I'm not really healed up yet . Being diabetic I heal slower than normal people and I have my health to consider. . The last thing I need is to wind up in the hospital again. I can say in the last 5 months I've worked hard to loose a little over 35 lbs mostly because I'd really love nothing more than to meet any grandchildren I may have coming at some point. I am feeling much better overall but this recent injury has set me back and slowed my progress on several fronts . I haven't written anything in stone as of yet and truthfully I'm likely to just play the cards as I get em without prejudice . I don't necessarily feel like I'm the ropes right now but I'm certainly not dominating the center of the ring. I'm taking my licks and giving them back every chance I get . Take this post however you want but take it with at least the reasoning that I respect ya'll enough to deal straight with ya'll like I always have , no beating around the bush or trying to fancifully paint some picture out of complete f***s lol. IMO life is too damn short to be worrying about who you've lied to and how you're going to pull that off . I don't hustle . I fish, I report , I repeat . I'll just leave things at that for now . Thanks for your consideration.

Morning ya'll. I kinda suspected last night might be tough fishing but I didn't let that stop me from trying hard or being thorough in my methods. I had already spoken about that. Rick , Wilford, Maria and Dillon are really nice folks and I'm Sure I'll be seeing them again fairly soon since they indicated as such. I had suggested different hrs than we fished last night but that wasn't in the cards for them this time around so we fished 8 p - midnight. We saw the most action in the first hr around dark . Dillon boated a goo first drop in the first minutes of fishing . They got a handful of tunas on the line but we didn't get any of them in the boat . All of it was a new experience for these guys so the learning curve was a large factor. After that first hr we hardly got a bite except for a few henpecks likely Itty bitty snotty's. We had plenty of fish around and under us . We had a pretty nice baitball conjured up . They just weren't on the bite . That didn't stop us from having some laughs and great conversation , still a great time with some great folks who it turns out we share several common interests besides fishing. I really enjoyed hanging with these cool cats and I'm certainly looking forward to next time. Wilford expressed interest in the open boat trips and said that he'd like to attend a few . Great meeting ya'll! We really enjoyed having ya'll aboard!

Morning ya'll. Haven't been posting because there's not much to report. Just trying to heal which is going pretty good. Trying not to do too much but still be productive. I've been working on various things from 4 or 5 in the morning till 11 maybe noon. By then it's hot and I'll sweat so much my bandage will start coming loose or get wonky. I popped a couple stitches early on and have been more careful since. Mostly been doing maintenance. Changing oil in equipment / vehicles and such . I've also been doing a few minor repairs to the SLABILLAC. I had 2 switches in my main dash panel go out and decided to just swap the entire fixture . I haven't been happy with the way it's been mounted and sealing to the console for awhile so I've fabbed a fl**ge to give it a little better footprint. I'm going to install it this morning , change out a nav light and replace a wire on a dock light that I cut on the last trip out because I couldn't get it to turn off when the switch went out and didn't want to run down the batteries. So basically just piddling the last several days trying not to sit idle to much and go nuts lol. In the hottest part of the day I've just been doing some house chores. Cooking, dishes, laundry etc. Most of the garden is pretty much played out . The cukes and green beans are done for. The tomatoes too. The bell and banana peppers are still really producing though. I got peppers running out of my ears lol. This whole ordeal has really put a damper on some of my plans but I reckon it's just a delay. For instance I've got everything but the cement to build around 100 more crappie condos and I had planned to already have had those built and in the water but I reckon I still have time to get that done before fall . I've got a trip Fri night at 8 . The customer dictated the hrs on this one so we'll just go give it hell and see what we can come up with. The solunar table doesn't reflect a lot going on at that time but I'm not going to let that influence my state of mind and I have a can do attitude. Last trip out finding fish was easy , they were where I'd expected them to be just couldn't get the cooperation from them. I'm sure it was simply a timing thing. I'm supposed to get my stitches removed on Wednesday and I'm feeling pretty good overall but it's still kinda painful at times . Otherwise healing up as good as can be expected I reckon. I hope everyone is getting back to normal by now since the hurricane. We still have a good bit of that season to get through and really haven't reach the peak yet. I've now got both my generators fully operational , fully serviced and I feel quite confident that if we get another storm I'm prepared . Anyway, just a little update on what I've been up to. When I'm not posting often I can't help but feel accountable to ya'll as to my whereabouts, plans and status. I hope this post finds you well and in good spirits. Thanks again for staying tuned. Catch ya'll later................

It's kinda crazy in life that at times you know some things are coming inevitably but no matter how much you try to prepare yourself when they happen it still hits you like a ton of bricks . The last couple days I haven't been able to look to the south from my porch and not get misty because I miss my friend. The way I see it we lost one of the great ones a few days ago. I knew Woody Allen for over 20 yrs . First as neighbors but soon after a friend and later a dear one . I've always respected folk who didn't beat around the bush and dealt with ya straight without sugar coating, hyperbily or hidden agenda. That was Woody to a tee. Woody never left ya wondering how he really felt about something and that's kind of an understatement lol. He wasn't a large man in stature but his heart was bigger than Texas. His love and care of children and animals made that quite evident. In fact some of ya'll may remember some years back there was a FB post from a father about his daughter loving to fish so much and he was looking to get her a boat and was asking about something small not having much money to work with . Woody had just bought himself a little bigger boat . He saw that post and gave that young lady his 18 ft ranger bass rig ! . His career spanned 4 decades of serving our community as a police officer in differing roles and he loved his work. Knowing him has led me to meet many fine people over the years who I have no doubt share my sentiments about the man . If there was a selfish bone in his body I never witnessed it. I knew and fished with Woody well before I pursued my dream of being a full time guide. When I was considering making that transition he told me that he had every confidence in me and I should give it a go because life was too damn short to be miserable at your job . He was one of my biggest supporters throughout the process in that dream becoming a reality and I'm going to miss pulling out of the driveway with the boat and stopping to say hello while he was checking his mail for him to tell me " go get em s**thead" . That was his nickname for me. Yeah I loved him too. I had the pleasure to witness him catching his PB crappie and hybrids and he told me several times he'd never caught so many fish with anyone else . Him being a lifelong and quite accomplished hunter and fisherman I always took those remarks with a sense of accomplishment. The mount in the pic is a mule deer he shot well before I was even born . He said he was tired of looking at it in the livingroom and I caught him in the process of putting it out to the garbage! I was rebuilding my house at the time and asked if i could have it as i thought it was a really great example of fine taxidermy for its age and it would look good above the mantle at my house with our decor . When I see it now it's like he's still hanging out with me having a few laughs. When it got to the point that he couldn't take his boat out any longer I got him on the water as much as I could when he was feeling up to it . I spent many, many a delightful hr on the water with him , we sure did have some great times . I'll never forget how he'd glow when talking about his grandson attending A&M and just how proud he was of that fact. Katy told me he passed in his sleep and had kind of a smirk on his face. That's fitting because I'm sure he was giving someone a hard time on his way to the happy hunting grounds lol. I'm so glad he went peacefully, it's been a rough last year or so for him and I'm glad he's no longer suffering albeit I miss him . Farewell old friend. Tight lines and fair winds. I'm sure ya got a biggun on the ground and are ready for a beer. I'll catch ya on the flipside brother, till then take our love with you wherever you go.

Afternoon ya'll. We rescheduled last nights trip . There was a lot of lightning around and after discussing it myself and the customer agreed to just find another date. This trip is from early sat morning. Mike , Bruce , Tim and David wanted to do some night fishing and thought the tunas would be fun to target . The actual prime time for Fri and sat was 2 in the afternoon and none of them wanted to deal with that being a 100 and screw that outside at that time of day and I don't blame them lol. I suggested that we try the next biggest spike on the graph and they said that sounded good. Full trip 11:30- just before daylight. Finding fish was easy, Finding fish that wanted to cooperate was a whole nutha m***a . We landed 4 tunas. 1 was big enough to keep . Lost one at the boat . I got a good enough look at it to know it wouldn't have kept either. We threw back a good handful of yeller fellers, several snotty's that were plenty long enough just sorry looking and skinny , some baby sharks and a goo or two. Overall a really slow bite . They just weren't giving us much love at all. Super nice guys though . We had some great conversation. They're all pretty avid fisherman and had tons of questions which I'm always happy to answer in detail when it comes to methods and my madness behind it . If you're going to spend a slow night fishing these are the guys to do it with for sure and we had a great time . Since I made the calls on this one in regards to timing and such we'll be doing this one over . I don't make stupid guarantees like don't catch don't pay . When our target species is being hard to catch I fish harder , not take you catfishing and I always hold true to everything I say and explain to folks on the phone on initial contact for private charters . " If you show up when I suggest and follow instructions and I can't get you on the action I'll do the trip over" . These guys were very appreciative of that and I appreciate just how much effort they put in themselves. Sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail. We came in just before daylight after hitting many spots seeing plenty of fish that just wouldn't cooperate and at that point it just seemed we were whipping a dead horse . Mike said it would be a couple weeks before everyone could start thinking about choosing a different date so we'll just be in touch and get after it again once everyone could get together . Great meeting ya'll! Looking forward to wiping this one off the books lol! Catch ya'll soon!

Made my bait run yesterday. Got the SLABILLAC cleaned up , changed oil and spark plug in my portable gen and got it and a few things put away in the SLABORATORY this morning. Avoiding the hottest part of the day I came inside and got a few house chores done . This evening when it cools down the Buzzard and I will restring a handful of rods , restock tackleboxes, check tires and grease hubs . Looking forward to fishing . To be on the safe side I've got a little extra help this weekend. They've got me on 2 different antibiotics which have some side effects so I'll just be manning the helm the next couple trips.

That ain't no lie.

Got my to do list done today. Got generator picked up. Got the steering on the SLABILLAC fixed. Spent the hottest part of the day just resting and trying to heal. Mr Richardson fixed me up real nice with the generator and Chuck came over for a little while and helped me bleed the hydraulics on the steering this evening. Thank you so much guys ! My plans for tomorrow are to get the boat cleaned up and do a little maintenance then make a bait run . I have trips scheduled now for early Saturday and early Sunday mornings. I'm trying to pace myself so I don't go backwards but still get things done. Have a great evening ya'll.

Morning ya'll. Man it's good to be home. I actually got some sleep last night and that felt good . Idk why but i just didn't sleep much at all or get any real rest in the hospital. I've got a bunch of things to get done this week but I'm going to pace myself. My next trip scheduled is early am Sat for the tunas . I had to reschedule a couple due to being in the hospital and we'll get together soon. I was feeling so bad that I didn't get the steering cylinder put back on the boat before I went to the hospital so that's on the agenda for today at some point. I need to get a few things from the grocery and a few things in terms of wound care. I need to go fetch my portable Gen from Mr Richardson's shop today just to get that out of the way . I seen there's a possibility of having another storm in the gulf within a week so having that off the to do list and having peace of mind in that area will be a good thing. I'll make a bait run tomorrow and if I can swing it I'll get a few guys together to do a little pre fishing before my next scheduled trip. I certainly could use a little time on the water after this recent series of events. This little girly sure was happy to see her popi. I missed her too. I hope this post finds you well and in good spirits. Thanks again for staying tuned.

WISE ADVICE FROM A FARMER'S WIFE
Whenever you return a borrowed pie pan, make sure it's got a warm pie in it.
Invite lots of folks to supper. You can always add more water to the soup.
There's no such thing as a woman's work on a farm. There's just work.
Make home a happy place for the children. Everybody returns to their happy place.
Always keep a small light on in the kitchen window at night.
If your man gets his truck stuck in the field, don't go in after him. Throw him a rope and pull him out with the tractor.
Keep the kerosene lamp away from the the milk cow's leg.
It's a whole lot easier to get breakfast from a chicken than a pig.
Always pat the chickens when you take their eggs.
It's easy to clean an empty house, but hard to live in one.
All children spill milk. Learn to smile and wipe it up.
Homemade's always better'n store bought.
A tongue's like a knife. The sharper it is the deeper it cuts.
A good neighbor always knows when to visit and when to leave.
A city dog wants to run out the door, but a country dog stays on the porch 'cause he's not fenced-in.
Always light birthday candles from the middle outward.
Nothin' gets the frustrations out better'n splittn' wood.
The longer dress hem, the more trusting the husband.
Enjoy doing your children's laundry. Some day they'll be gone.
You'll never catch a runnin' chicken but if you throw seed around the back door you'll have a skillet full by supper.
Biscuits brown better with a little butter brushed on 'em.
Check your shoelaces before runnin' to help somebody.
Visit old people who can't get out. Some day you'll be one.
The softer you talk, the closer folks'll listen.
The colder the outhouse, the warmer the bed.

Afternoon ya'll. I'm feeling much much better and am on the mend. All my most recent blood work has come back good . Got my incision closed up today and the surgeon didn't put any real restrictions on me except to be careful not to plop down and rip my stitching. Supposed to see the I D doc today to discuss what antibiotics I'll be getting from here on out and more or less figure out my discharge plan. This is the first time in my life ever being admitted to a hospital since I was very ,very young and I've gotta say that the care I've received at Memorial Herman in the woodlands has been absolutely stellar. Everyone has been very helpful and very nice. I should be outta here Mon at the latest. I would like to take the chance here to say thank you to everyone for their well wishes. An overwhelming number of ya'll have reached out privately offering help and support and have sent me boatloads of love which really means a lot to me truly ❤️. I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Catch ya'll soon because I'll be ready to hit the ground running.

Looks like I'm going to be here at least a few days they're saying. My appointment with my regular doc was short he sent me immediately to ER. Dammit. This was the last thing I needed but I reckon I gotta get better.

Guys I just wanted to update ya'll from my last post. I didn't have heat stroke. I had a staph infection/ cellulitis in my leg . I've been totally down even pretty much bed ridden since I posted last. This is the first time I've gone more than a couple hrs without a bad fever and could think straight. A few have tried to contact me about upcoming trips and I promise to get back to everyone in a timely manner. I dare not say I'm on the mend as of yet but I'm trying to get better and back at it .

22/07/2024

Morning ya'll. Sorry I haven't been more communicative but I've been busy. I haven't been pushing fishing on anyone lately because I'd just feel like a real prick saying " hey let's go fishing " or "you need to go fishing " especially when I still see so many people in the area struggling since the storm . Some still don't have power from what I understand. I have had some calls for some near future nighttime tunas .

I reckon I'm going to have to be more careful and pay a little better attention. Evidently yesterday I had heat stroke. Fri afternoon still not having received my steering cylinder I decided to address the back door in which the bottom of the frame was rotted out . As I pulled some trim off I found much more rotted wood than I would ever expect and it was going to be a much bigger job than I had thought to not only repair the damage but to make a cure so it doesn't happen again . Getting up and down from the ground is just murder on my hip . Something I'm trying to address but am in some limbo with the ole sawbones about but that a different story. Bob came over and Chuck stopped by for awhile to help me get phase one done in replacing all the rotten wood . We replaced it all with treated. I was in a lot of pain and if they'd not been there to help I'd be in a major bind to get it done . Once again you guys are lifesavers! I know being my friend has been a pain in the ass lately but things will get back to normal soon. I really appreciate you guys! BTW the steering cylinder came in late sat afternoon. Yesterday Chris came over to help me with phase 2 to make a cure which is a small shed roof to get the water and splash back as far away from the door as possible. I also plan to pour a little concrete from the threshold and surrounding to slope away so water can't just stand there ever again . Anyway , yesterday me and Chris got the siding back up most of the shed roof complete . Around lunchtime I started feeling poorly. I had a 48 in fan blowing on us , we were taking a few breaks and drinking water but I was going downhill and I kept telling him I didn't feel right but kept trying to push to get this done knowing we're in for more rain most of the week. Around 2 I had a splitting headache, was getting dizzy at times and at the time I didn't realize that I had stopped sweating . I honestly don't know when that occurred. Around 3 I knew we wouldn't get finished because i was feeling really rough so I had Buzzard come out and help Chris put some of the cut pieces of leftover r panel from the shed on it for a temporary roof. I think Chris left around 4 p. Thanks again for all your help Chris! Man I'm sorry i fell out on ya thank you for sticking it out for me . I went into the house to cool off and just couldn't stop shivering. When Mrs Ho**er got home she checked my tempature . It was 101.3 and I was miserable. I'm feeling better this morning but still kinda feeling run down . While it's cooler out this morning I'm going to get the steering cylinder put back on. And hopefully get bled and finished up so the SLABILLAC will be back in operation. I'd like to start offering some more open boat trips for nighttime tunas again soon. Possibly this weekend. I haven't been fishing in so long I've lost vision in my left ear lol. I hope everyone is starting to get back to normal after the storm and I hope this post finds you well and in good spirits. Thanks again for staying tuned.

18/07/2024

Well my plan for this morning was to replace the faulty coil on the Draggin Wagon but it's raining here with some thunder storms just to the north . Guess I'll have to wait till it stops . I've been up since 2 cleaning up the SLABORATORY and putting tools away from the last several projects and repairs and are ready for the next round. I've spent more time with a wrench in my hand than a fishing pole lately but I reckon it's a necessary evil. I suppose I can try and figure out why the portable Gen is only putting out 110 this morning because that indoor work and will help me be better prepared for the next storm if we get one . When I hit roadblocks lately I try to concentrate on what I can do vs can't . A good ole redneck proverb has always been " can't never got anything done" and I believe that's true. Kinda crazy , an early hurricane and now a July cool front? Is what it is I reckon.......

Evening folks. My trip for tonight fell through Roy was in town and wanted to go and bring a fellow driver but ended up having to leave again so it is what it is . Just been working on the house and fixing things one at a time . The motor came in for my porch fan so I fixed that today. Worked on the SLABINATOR yesterday getting it back up to par. Still waiting on steering cylinder for the SLABILLAC. I got an email from them , I believe the part has shipped. Here's a couple pics from 8 yrs ago . During the memorial day floods a big pine fell through the house and I'm still working on it ! Lol.

Lol
16/07/2024

Lol

15/07/2024

So the part I believed was bad isn't in the rebuild kit after I disassembled. After some searching I found the manufacturer phone number , called and talked to a tech . He confirmed that the test I performed indicates the cylinder and told me to email some info to him so they could send me a new cylinder on warranty. Evidently the cylinder isn't ever supposed to bypass and they just replace it if it ever does. That info isn't on any of the blogs I read nor in any of the the places I've searched. So now I guess I'm still waiting since ive se t them the information they've requested so to be continued..........

Morning ya'll. I hope everyone is starting to get back to normal or at least close to it. Since I hadn't posted anything in some days several people have reached out to check on me which I really appreciate. We're OK here . No major damage. I lost some shingles on the garage but no leaks . It is an older roof and it's time to fix that anyway. Getting that shot in my elbow fixed it and that is feeling much, much better thank goodness. I virtually have no pain in it at all. Since the storm everything has been about cleanup , repairs and maintenance which has had me busy. I'm still waiting on my steering parts which I'm told will arrive today. My trip for last night I got notice days ago would need rescheduled and my trip for tonight is rescheduled because I don't think I'll have the steering fixed in time especially if my parts don't arrive today. I had reported before that during the storm my generac went down and my portable has a problem now only running at half it's power capacity but I was able to keep one room cool to be able to sleep, all my fridges and freezers running and kept the bait alive so overall I reckon I scraped by without any major losses for which I'm quite thankful . This post is going to be a bit lengthy . I've got a story to tell which I believe is relevant seeing how I'm always preaching about doing your homework when it comes to a hiring guide to make sure you will have a quality experience. This time I didn't do mine when hiring a service and it almost cost me .

I'll start with as I reported before when the generac went down I scrambled to get my portable going . Once I had that situation at least stable I called generac to talk to customer service. It was still during the storm there was a lot going on , that leaning tree was on my mind and frankly I was a little stressed out. I've got to say my experience Generac customer service was outstanding. The guy on the phone did everything he could do to try and help me remotely and in the end on that call he said a technician was necessary to proceed further being a few possible causes for the code it was throwing and he gave me a few local numbers from his list to call. I called the first with no answer . The second answered and I understood that during the storm they were of course swamped with calls. The lady took my number and told me she would call me back in the morning and try to get someone out but couldn't make me any guarantee because their customers under contracts were first priority which I of course understand and it was what it was atm. I decided to wait and hear back from her in the morning. A call which never came. She said it'd be around 8 and around 10:30 or so I decided to call the next number on the list where I left a message . Never got a response from them either but again I'm sure they were swamped as well. I got my portable refilled with fuel and decided to go in and cool off , grab a bite and chill out for a few. I browsed on FB for a few min to see what all was going on around Conroe saw some storm damage pics and ran across a post offering Generac service. Here's my first mistake. I didn't go to their page, I just called the number. If I had gone to their page I would have seen a 3.7 rating for 6 reviews and I would have just scrolled on . He answered the phone . We briefly talked about the issues I was having. He asked me to text him my information and said he'd get back to me ASAP to see if he could come out that day. I texted him the information and within the hr he texted me back to say he'd be there within the hr. I have to admit I was happy that I had someone coming out so quickly but in retrospect that might have been a red flag being the situation what it was overall. He came out . There were 2 of them. The owner , a young feller well under 30 and an employee evidently. The employee was carrying a battery for the Gen which I told him you " won't be needing that because that's not the problem at all." He just kept walking and said " oh we'll see" . After seeing that it would crank right up and run like I told them over the phone.....lol . I found it odd right off the bat the employee was googling the symptoms and the code while the owner proceeded to tell me how above board, transparent and honest they were going to be dealing with me . They were there a total of maybe 30 minutes. The one was on Google the whole time , the other had a meter out and tested a few things. I watched, asked a few questions and gave them some feedback about some things I had already checked with my simple tester and all they did was confirmed what I already knew , that it wasn't making any power. The owner told me that it was either the voltage regulator or the brushes. I said " well, I guess we just test for that and we'll know what's up then right?" . He responded " there's no test for that . "We swap one and if it's not that then it's the other ". I responded " in my experience there's a test for everything, don't take this the wrong way but I've been around the block a few times and I know the difference between a mechanic and a parts changer" . He said" well , not on these models this is how we do it ". I let that kinda go by the wayside while we discussed the age of the unit and possibly being covered by warranty. It struck me funny that he said he doesn't do much warranty work so he couldn't speak to that . So I asked him what the parts would cost and he said he didn't know for sure but the brushes were at least 200 and the voltage regulator was 1200. That was just for the parts labor was separate. He couldn't tell me how many brushes were in the unit. He said could be 2 could be 4 depending on the model. I asked how much the labor was going to be to change the parts and fig it out . He said" I don't really know could be 20 min could be up to a few hrs depending on which part " . I asked well , how much is the labor per hr ?" . 120 he replied. My response to that was " again, don't take this the wrong way but for 120 bucks an hr one would figure you'd have some kind of idea on how long this should take ". When he told me that it's hard to say because all models are different ... I just stopped him there and said " OK let me figure out my financial situation, those are expensive parts and I'll have to just get back to you on how quickly I'll be able to move on this . How much do I owe you for coming out ?" . He charged me 318 bucks , asked me twice for a 5 star review and said he'd be in touch about parts availability. He texted me a link to leave a review right before he left . I sat around thinking a bit. For someone who has certified Generac technician written on the side of his truck he sure left me with more questions than answers. I got right back on the phone to Generac customer service. I was on hold for awhile but when I got to talk to someone again their customer service was outstanding. I told them about my experience with this so called " tech" and he confirmed what I thought I already knew. There's a test for everything. He was very helpful in giving me all the part numbers for my specific model. Informed me that the 2 most common causes for my issues were the voltage regulator or the brushes and even gave me the MSRP on those parts so I could shop them around and know whether I was getting a good deal or not. BTW. The brushes are between 17 and 25 dollars. The voltage regulator is between 400 and 600 depending on where you are looking. That's for OEM parts too. The voltage regulator is part of the controller and is less likely than the brushes but isn't uncommon. He gave me lots of information over the phone and told me that that so called " tech" from what it sounded like was quite likely price gouging . Something that didn't occur to me at the time and is illegal. I shopped the parts for a good deal on both from a place called generator magic . They even had extremely reasonable overnight delivery! Being that both are fairly common problems I bought 4 sets of brushes, a control board and got it overnight delivery and spent less than 600 bucks. I have spare parts on hand if or when needed next time. I got my parts in. Changed the controller first because it only takes a few minutes. That wasn't the problem. Since disassembled it and found what's in the pics . I replaced the brushes , cleaned up the slip rings and she's back up and running perfectly again. Chuck came over and helped me a bit to get done before any rain came. He also talked to a friend of his who had some suggestions on how to clean the slip rings . Thanks Chuck! . Coincidentally a few hrs after we finished and tested the unit that young feller texted me asking if I had left a review, was ready to get the parts and let me know that the prices he had given me on the parts were good. Of course he didn't know what I had already done . I went ahead and called him. I let him know how dissatisfied and disappointed I was and I wasn't ugly with him at all . I told him that I had already fixed the unit myself and no longer needed nor wanted anything from him and I wouldn't be leaving a review. He blew up! And I mean really blew up! He cussed me out and hung up. Then he started texting me. Over text I let him know that I believed that he was price gouging me and I wasn't happy about that. He texted me that he was coming over right now to " handle it" I let him know that wasn't necessary. There wasn't anything to " handle " I was just done with him and there wasn't any reason to contact me further. We'll, he showed up in my yard about 10 minutes later with the other guy.....
screaming ,cussing ,insulting me. lol making a real scene ! I told him he was acting a fool. He was just pi**ed that he got caught nothing more , nothing less. He and they other guy started to act intimidating and started going in the direction that they wanted to get physical. I told him" if you're feeling froggy jump son ! " I let him know that he was on 24 hr video and audio recorded surveillance and pointed up at the camera lol. The other guy immediately went back to the truck without incident lmao. The young feller continued to insult me . Threw the money I'd paid him on the ground talking smack the whole time. That was kind of a bonus lol! I didn't ask for a refund. He did show up after all initially. Some people's children I'm telling ya. The first mistake stupid people make Is they assume everyone else is stupid too. I'm sure he threw that money on the ground because he knew he got cold busted price gouging and by refunding me I couldn't seek litigation against him . My entire property is under 24 hr audio and video recorded surveillance and our entire dealing is on the DVR or on text . There's a camera right above the Gen, right above the electrical panel as well as placed around the entire property lol. If anyone wants to know who it was so they can avoid him feel free to pm me . I'm not going to put the name public because I'm unsure of the law about that and don't need the little peckerwood trying to come after me lol. I will say that it's an electrician company that supposedly does HVAC as well as Gen services local to Conroe. 3.7 for 6 reviews. I should have done my homework! I could have probably had my Gen running the same day if I'd had called a real professional and could have avoided all the silliness that came along. I guess there's a silver lining . I now know how to fix the 2 most common issues with it and have the parts on hand to do so . After all hurricane season is just starting and they're saying it'll be an active one.

On a side note. If any of ya'll are in roofing or know someone you trust I'll be interested in some quotes to put a layer of shingles on my garage. It's only got one layer . I'll get the material. I'm unsure of the sq footage since I've added on to it some yrs ago and just don't remember so itll need measurements. I don't get on roofs anymore. Sorry for the book but I thought it was a story worth telling. I hope this post finds you well and in good spirits. Thanks again for staying tuned.
