The first American painter to ever come to India was Edwin Lords Weeks. Born in an affluent family of tea and spice merchants, Weeks' early travels took him to South America, and then Egypt, Persia, and Morocco.
India became his destination in 1882-83. His sketches and paintings during this trip featured in his book, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.
He returned to India in 1887 roaming around the country till 1893.
He made detailed paintings of the architecture and people of India on the basis of the photographs he took.
Pic. Weeks titled it: "Hindu Merchants" The painting was completed in 1885. It shows a market in Rajpootana. Notice the varity of head gear indicating people from different communities. A woman carrying a large vessel stands in the left bottom corner along with a boy. A Seth, with red turban, is at his seat peering through records while a bare chested man goes through some papers. The richly carved doors and parapets made of wood suggest hovels in a bazaar in Marwar.
