Suzhou Pingtan

Pingtan is best described as the traditional Chinese folk equivalent of contemporary soap operas such as Days of Our Lives or General Hospital. This art form first emerged in the Ming and early Qing Dynasties, and performances make use of both speech and song to narrate a historical epic. Pingtan is performed in Suzhou dialect, but just like Kunqu Opera, it doesn’t really matter if you barely understand a word. The body language and fluid vocal singing is captivating, and despite our language deficiencies, we managed to catch the gist of the story.

Suzhou Pingtan is known for its story telling, joke cracking, music playing and aria singing. It is performed solo, in duet or as a trio, and involves singing and storytelling. The small three-stringed plucked instrument andPipa(lute) are used as accompaniments. The Ban, or wooden clappers, produces various styles of tone and melody.

Pingtan has absorbed popular folk tunes. Due to this development, Suzhou Pingtan has a great diversity of styles in singing and storytelling.

Zhouzhuang Suzhou

Zhouzhuang, an ancient water town, is situated in the Yangtz River Delta Area, the most dynamic region of China, one-hour drive from Shanghai. Zhouzhuang walked into the eyes of the world with the introduction of Chen Yifei’s masterpiece, “Hometown in Memory”. Zhouzhuang aims to develop into a world-class holiday resort with pleasant environment. Tradition is well-preserved here. Every household is decorated with flowers; small flags wave outside the windows; and fantastic toys are hung outside the doors. White walls, gray roofs, and green plants can be seen everywhere。Future Zhouzhuang will be featured “tour of water town”, serving people with exquisite natural environment and various resources, such as ancient houses, lakes and orchards. Both beautiful scenery and fresh air make Zhouzhuang a great health resort.. In the ancient town, all kinds of stores, restaurants, and tea houses can be found everywhere. The main commodities here are tiny handicrafts.

Colorful cultural programs can be enjoyed at Zhouzhuang. The graceful sound of Kunqu opera flows with the aroma of the tea. At night, “Four Seasons of Zhouzhuang”, a large stage drama depicting daily life in the water town, was put on the stage.

Tiger Leaping Gorge Hiking

Tiger Leaping Gorge is the longest, deepest, and narrowest gorge in the world. The Gorge acquired its name because, according to local legend, a tiger once leaped over its rapids to escape from hunters who had chased it into the Gorge. You can trek through the mountains of southwestern China.

Here, about 60km (37mi) north of the famous city of Lijiang, lies Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest river canyon in the world (though, by some metrics, it’s only one of the deepest in the world). It rests gracefully in between the glorious Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain.

The trail varies greatly, and it ends very differently than it begins. The first view is of the villages and terraces that lie directly beside the gorge.

As you cover more and more ground and delved deeper into the uninhabited wilderness, the terrain becomes more difficult and more wild, and mountain goats began to make regular appearances. The most difficult part of the trail is known as “28 Bends,” aptly named for its arduous hatchback trail of 28 bends, that takes a about 3 hours to complete.

Chinese Paper Cut Art is a critical cultural piece in China. It is used in all kinds of celebrations including wedding, promotion and moving to a new house. The paper art will be glued on the door or window to symbolize happiness and good luck. "囍“ is an ancient Chinese word for happiness. It is also the most popular pattern used in the Chinese paper cut art. This instructable will open the door of Chinese popular art craft for you.

Paper cuts often depict birds, dragons, and other animals. It is also common to see Chinese characters meaning such things as "prosperity" on paper cuts. Whatever the design, the meaning is usually symbolic, and they are as such considered auspicious. Red paper is commonly used, since red is the most auspicious color in China.

Chinese paper cuts are not supposed to be produced by machine, but by hand using scissors or knives. In the countryside, they are usually made by women and girls. This used to be one of the crafts that every girl had to master in order to be considered a worthy bride. Professional paper-cutting artists are almost always men, who work together in shops and earn their living from the craft.

Cycling in Beijing

Bicycling is the best way to know better about Beijing City. Going through thousands of Hutongs will be an specail and memorable experience.

Hutong represents an important culture element of Beijing city. Thanks to Beijing's long history and status as capital for six dynasties, almost every hutong has its anecdotes, and some are even associated with historic events. In contrast to the court life and elite culture represented by the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven, the hutongs reflect the culture of grassroots Beijingers. The hutongs are residential neighborhoods which still form the heart of Old Beijing.

Starting from your hotel and go along Houhai Scenic area to Yandaixiejie, Drum Tower and Bell Tower, Jinshan Park, Nanchizi Street, Tiananmen Squre and Beichizi Street, finally back to hotel. This is the most classic cycling route in Beijing and you will go through hutongs and pass through Drum Tower, Houhai Area,Tiananmen Square and experience every corner of Beijig City where the locals stay.

Chinese Kung Fu

Chinese Kung Fu is now an integral element of Chinese culture, and it also has global appeal. It is an ancient Chinese hand-to-hand martial art that was developed to serve primarily as a defense against a one-on-one, hand-to-hand attack from an opponent, originally in the context of military combat, where the opponent may or may not be armed.

The mental dimension of Kung Fu of course involves self-control, both on the level of the practitioner's physical movements and on on the level of the practitioner's feelings, temperament, attitude or psyche, leading, when practiced by a master, to the pinnacle of humility combined with utter self-control and self-confidence; like the black belt practitioner of karate, the Kung Fu master who knows his strength and skill need not behave aggressively in order to burnish his self-confidence; his self-confidence is anchored solidly in his humble knowledge that when called upon to defend himself, his training ensures that he will acquit himself admirably, whether he is victorious or not.

Chinese kung fu is often an attraction to people who have never visited China before. The most famous style is Shaolin kung fu, which teaches people how to have an unbreakable body, tough fists and a hard head. This provides unbeatable memories for visitors.

The Lingering Garden was listed from the first as cultural relics of national importance in 1961. The meaning of the name is "long lasting between heaven and earth"; construction of this garden started in the Ming dynasty; it has changed owner many times, and has seen both splendour and decay. After the Government funded its restoration in 1953, its original grandeur was restored. The eastern, northern and western parts are the extensions of the Sheng's Garden. Jinshanling Great Wall lies in the mountainous area of Luanping County, Hebei Province, and has a total length of 10.5 kilometers. It is typical in structure and is famous for its broad field of vision, dense guard towers, unique landscape, elegant architecture, complete military defense system and excellent state of preservation. It is an exemplary section of the Great Wall and hence comes the saying that Jinshan section is the most quintessential of the 10,000-li Great Wall. Photographers know that the best place to take pictures of the Great Wall is not Badaling or Shanghaiguan, but Jinshanling. The Great Wall from Simatai in Beijing to Jinshanling in Hebei is the best preserved stretch, so many overseas visitors choose it. It is said that there are more overseas Great Wall climbers in Jinshanling than Chinese. People also say that anyone who has climbed Jinshanling is not interested in seeing any other part of the Great Wall, as it retains its original Ming Dynasty outlook, and so vividly reflects the full ethos of that epoch.

Jinshanling is on the other end of the Simatai-Jinshanling trek. It's one of the only sections of wall where it's legal to camp overnight.

How to go there
Take the 970 bus out of Beijing to Miyun and hire a taxi from there. Or just join a group tour from Beijing

22/01/2017

The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month and in the ancient times people called night Xiao. The 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China.

According to the Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate. At this time, people will try to solve the puzzles on the lanterns and eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) and get all their families united in the joyful atmosphere.

Today, the displaying of lanterns is still a big event on the 15th day of the first lunar month throughout China. People enjoy the brightly lit night.

Besides entertainment and beautiful lanterns, another important part of the Lantern Festival,or Yuanxiao Festival is eating small dumpling balls made of glutinous rice flour. We call these balls Yuanxiao or Tangyuan. Obviously, they get the name from the festival itself.
