Malmesbury has had more than fifty licensed premises over the last 800 years ranging from the hospitality provided by the monks to coaching inns, hotels, pubs, beer houses and breweries!

There was a brewery on the the site of the Town Hall and the left hand part of the current Town Hall used to be a malting hall. Drinking beer has always been an important Malmesbury pastime!

Back at the start of the 19th century, the brewery based at the Town Hall was owned by Daniel Smith. In 1821, two ambitious fellows, Thomas Luce and John Brooke, decided to lease the place. Fast forward to 1835, and Thomas was feeling bold—he bought the brewery outright, renaming it the Postern Mill Brewery on the spot that’s now called the Maltings.

But Thomas wasn’t done yet. After expanding and upgrading the brewery, he sold a slice of the land to the Market House Company, who went on to build the Town Hall there. Meanwhile, Esau Duck took over the remaining part and turned it into a bustling malthouse in 1886. Brewing eventually fizzled out when Stroud Brewery Company sold the building to Malmesbury Borough Council in 1926, officially ending its long connection to beer!

Malmesbury Bonfire Night Went Off with a Bang!! 🔥🎆
A massive thank you to everyone who helped organise Malmesbury’s annual bonfire night and fireworks display! With over 2,000 people turning up to watch the 2024 display, it was truly a night to remember!

Wow what an incredible day yesterday as the first ever eat:Malmesbury Festival took place! The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the town was buzzing with stalls offering a range of delicious foods and drinks attracting people from far and wide!

A huge thank you to the team, Malmesbury’s amazing businesses and traders, Malmesbury Town Council, all the market stall holders and everyone else who was involved in organising such a great day!

Malmesbury gets tasty at new food and drink festival 🍻🌯🥟🧁
Malmesbury is set to host its first major food and drink festival, with more than 60 stalls in the town showcasing producers across the region as well as local traders.

The day-long event, eat:Malmesbury takes place on Saturday 19 October, organised by eat: Festivals, an award-winning, not-for-profit West Country social enterprise that aims to connect communities with producers.

This is the first eat: Festival for Malmesbury and Wiltshire as a whole and comes as a result of the organisers approaching Malmesbury Town Council last year.

Misty Autumn Mornings in Malmesbury ✨
It’s no surprise that Malmesbury has been inspirational for artists throughout the years.

The artist simply known the world over as ‘Turner’ needs no introduction. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented artists this country has produced. His connection to Malmesbury is not so widely known but in fact he visited the town three times, first in 1791 aged just 16, and made several sketches of the Abbey and its setting above the Avon.

Tony Mcaleavy will tell the astonishing story of William Stumpe who rescued the Abbey and gave it to the town as a Parish church in the 1540's. He has uncovered a tale of tudor ambition -'rags to 'riches'. He has also discovered that King Charles lll is a direct descendant of William Stump!
