Malmesbury History: 15

During the Anarchy, the struggle between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda for the throne, Malmesbury was in the border zone between the supporters of the two sides.

King Stephen seized Malmesbury Castle from Bishop Roger of Sarum in 1139.

It is hard to imagine now but in the 1500’s the area around the Cloisters would have been full of buildings supporting the work of the Abbey.

The monks dining room, called the Frater or Refrectory, and the monks dormitories, called the Dorter were probably sited just beyond the Cloister, above the slope.

There would also have been the Chapter House, used for meetings by the Abbot, on the East side of the Cloister. The paved and marked area you can still see indicate where it was sited.
