Oh, the hours we'd spent inside the

Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see 'em

“Sise de Mòneche”: the typical dessert from . Traditionally prepared with three “mounds” of sponge cake topped with powdered sugar and filled with pastry cream. The name and curious shape are the stuff of many legends…

—the naturalist says it represents the three peaks of nearby Mount Maiella ⛰🏔🗻

—the more modest and chaste dessert-eater recalls the piece of cloth that the town’s cloistered nuns shoved between their breasts in order to create the appearance of a flat chest 🙏🙏🙏

—for the more imaginative connoisseur they represent a fantasy of nuns having three breasts. 👙👙👙

Whichever explanation you want to subscribe to, give this dessert a try… also available in single mountain peak or single breast options 😅

At first glance Castrovalva seems like an unassuming village in the middle of nowhere, but upon further inspection you quickly realize why it inspired master draftsman and printmaker M. C. Escher. His incisions of this charming village were thought to represent the height of his Italian period and made way for the daring sense of perspective in the fantasy worlds he’s most famous for. Can’t get to Italy right now? Check out Escher’s lithograph of Castrovalva, held in the , Washington DC.
