Over the years GTL’s development of their helical Pile technology has significantly advanced. We have recently designed and are performing static axial compression testing ( ASTM D1143-07) on single piles with a capacity of 550Mt (70 ksi), whilst using additional helical piles as reaction.

To achieve such pile capacities GTL deploy large hydraulic equipment capable of producing installation torque in excess of 350kNm.

The Karachaganak gas condensate field, situated in the north-west region of Kazakhstan, covers an area of more than 280km². The field's reserves comprise over 1,200 million tons of oil and condensate, and more than 1.35 trillion cubic metres of gas.

GTL care about extending the utility of materials through reuse, repurpose and recycling to minimise waste, pollution, water and the consumption of finite resources, reduce environmental impacts and cut Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (CO2e) and acknowledge that they are key elements of a Circular Economy.
As a commitment we have prepared a report to present the environmental impacts and benefits of repurposing products/materials used for the fabrication of our helical piles.
The report compares the benefits of repurposed produces made from prime steel throughout its lifecycle.

Our report shows how GTL can save 2163.95kg CO2e per tonne of steel pile products, which is 97.21% of the carbon emissions of a prime steel equivalent.

SABAH- SARAWAK GAS PIPELINE

Project Description
The Sabah–Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) is a 512km Malaysian natural gas pipeline that links Kimanis, Sabah to Bintulu, Sarawak (90km in Sabah and 422km in Sarawak)
The pipeline is part of the Petronas development project of "Sabah–Sarawak Integrated Oil and Gas Project".

This case regards GTL’s involvement with BP and their exploration of Northstar Island, an oil-drilling and refinement facility in the Beaufort sea – six miles offshore from Alaska’s North Slope. Being the very first offshore oil production facility situated in an arctic region of the United States, this manmade 4.5 acre gravel island presented a specific set of challenges.

GTL monitor the installation torque for the following reasons:

- To provide a qualitative assessment of the soils being penetrated at various depths. The recorded installation torque and depth will be interpreted against the existing soil data, by way of a graph. By interpreting the soil data against the installation torque, a correlation can be obtained that enables a simple verification strategy to be determined.

- To maintain the integrity of the Helical (screw) pile during installation and to mitigate damage through exceeding torsional strength to any of the pile’s components. Each Helical (screw) pile has a maximum stress level and this must not be exceeded.

GARRAF OIL FIELD DEVELOPMENT, IRAQ

Over 1000 piles were designed at various depths to accommodate a modular type construction. Piles were designed to The foundation pile design was undertaken as a limit state design, whereby a distinction was made in ultimate limit states (ULS) and serviceability limit states (SLS). Limit states are related to design situations, which was classified in persistent, transient, accidental and seismic design situations. In accordance with the superstructure operation states, accidental design situations are mentioned and classified in the foundation pile design.

GTL was appointed during FEED as Geotechnical Consultants and later included Engineering Design for piled foundations. GTL also undertook preliminary pile testing and CAT 2 checking for structures. Piles were eventually supplied and installed by the EPC Contractor.

We take professional obligation to provide the best solution for each specific project. It is therefore important to understand that GTL will not push a particular pile type as it is essential to systematically consider various foundation types and to select the optimum
alternative based on the superstructure requirements, the subsurface conditions, and foundation cost. Foundation types may include shallow foundations consisting of spread footing or mat foundations with or without ground improvement; or deep foundations consisting of driven piles, drilled shafts, or micro-piles.

In many occasions the helical is not the correct pile type in which case we do not promote its use. However, as a solutions provider we provide viable alternatives. The inclusion of the micro-pile within GTL’s portfolio was established due to the professional stance.

It became evident that in stiffer soils the installation of a helical pile became challenging, many would see fit to pre-bore however this is fraught with uncertainties, reduces alpha values and mitigates the benefits of the helical pile.

Helical pile foundations are an environmentally conscientious and a sustainable construction practice. The construction of a helical pile foundation consumes less raw material and requires fewer deliveries compared to other types of deep and shallow foundations.
Substitution of helical piles for other foundations almost always reduces the carbon footprint.

The use of helical piles is unlimited. There are so many applications that helical piles can be used for that will provide a stable foundation for any project you are working on. This includes Alternative Energy such as solar or wind energy.
