No prizes for guessing where I was this weekend ❄️☠️🚲

STRATHPUFFER 24 2025 was an absolute blast and I think I had a smile on my face for 24hours solid (excluding the couple of very brief head on encounters with a gorse bush!) 😖

The weather was utterly Baltic. When we arrived the van said -13C on the dash! The snow was thee most glorious dry powder which made for really tough riding and the bike didn’t always stay rubber side down but I lucked out getting both the sunset and sunrise laps. The sunrise made for what was possibly the most incredible vista I’ve seen on any adventure ever. Absolutely perfect weekend social with the awesome women who made up ‘the Puffragettes.’

Have you ever been tempted by an event as mad as the Puffer?

Josiah was out yesterday with Scott and Laura for our ‘Winter Warmer’ day. This was a day for those who already have some winter skills and want a refresh before the upcoming winter season. The conditions provided! Snow, ice and frozen turf to practice using all the hardwear and a trip to the summit of Meall Nan Tarmachan for good measure.

🧭Attending the last Bronze Navigator course of 2024? 🥉

As relieved as us that it’s next weekend and not this weekend? It’s always good to have a bit of weather for a navigation course but yesterday would have been brutal! Thankfully next weekend is looking a lot calmer.

Why not join us next weekend and learn the fundamentals of map reading and navigation?

Learn or refresh all the basics of navigating using a map. This course follows the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) bronze syllabus and upon successful completion, you will receive a Bronze NNAS Award.

Not a photo from a recent adventure but this is my amazing friend Rachael and she needs our help. Rachael recently found out she is in bone marrow failure due to a rare form of blood cancer called Myelofibrosis. The cure is a stem cell transplant and this will only be possible if Rachael finds a donor.

It’s that time of year again 🔦

The nights are as long as the days and it’s only a couple of weeks until the clocks change. Why not do something productive and join a night navigation workshop?

Night nav is often talked about as if it is some kind of magic but it’s really just a way of practicing navigating in poor visibility.

Although most people probably won’t plan to be out in the dark, I make a point of running and mountain biking in the dark evenings through winter. It really makes me feel like I’ve gamed the system and I love it.

These photos were taken earlier this year when our good friend Vicky was practising for the Mountain Leader Assessment (which she passed) 👏

Big shout out to Julie at Yoga-on-Tay for adapting her class for all the injuries in the room tonight - including the dafty with a burst rib 🙋‍♀️

Yoga compliments hillwalking, cycling and climbing really well. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my strength and resilience to injury since starting regular practice a few years ago. Julie is also a great climber and sometimes calls climbing ‘yoga in action’. Check it out!

Our new 2025 dates go live in one week! 🗓️

This weekend was a great time in the Cairngorms scouting out new ideas for 2025! As well as the traditional hiking trips we offer, we’ll be adding in some swimming next year!

On Saturday, I hiked to Loch Avon with my amazing friend Claire and my slightly bonkers spaniel Jura to explore suitable water entry points for our Swim + Hike weekends in 2025! The water wasn’t even that cold.

The weather was incredible for any time of year but to get blue skies and HEAT at the end of September is quite a special treat.

On Sunday a group of friends had the use of the sauna at Loch Insh. It’s a definite yes for the events next year! We’ll also be teaming up with our friend Imogen at for this trip.

Carn Ghluasaid, Sgurr Nan Conbhairean and Sail Chaorainn ⛰️⛰️⛰️

After yesterday we were looking forward to the forecast of fog and 8c…. Forecast was wrong 🤣 another scorcher, this time with an inversion. There was a breeze today and much fewer keds making the conditions perfect.

A’Ghlas Bheinn and Beinn Fhada ⛰️⛰️

A big day in the heat. Easily the hottest day we’ve had in the hills this year 🥵 so much for autumn?

Eagles and ptarmigans today and lots and lots of deer keds! I’m going to be feeling phantom crawling all night!

Well done everyone. That was NOT easy in the heat ☀️

Our Story

Murray Wilson has over 30 years experience of hill walking, Munro bagging, hiking, trekking, scrambling, backpacking and mountaineering in the United Kingdom. Bitten by the outdoors bug as a Boy Scout, I have a real passion for the wild lands of Scotland. A member of the Mountain Training Association, qualified Mountain Leader, outdoor emergency First Aid instructor, holder of a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, NNAS accredited navigation instructor, Mountain Safety Advisor to the BBC, Duke of Edinburgh Award accredited Supervisor and Assessor, and fully insured to give you peace of mind. I specialise in long distance, self sufficient backpacking trips through remote wilderness areas of Scotland. These can be multi-day trips on recognised trails, such as the West Highland Way, the Skye Trail or a more random collection of drove roads, deerstalker tracks, coffin routes or old rights of way. I'm here to help you learn to navigate, tackle that challenging route, develop your camp craft, teach you new skills and above all, to have fun and a great day in the hills.

Over the years as the business grew, Murray couldn’t cope on his own and now relies on equally passionate and qualified friends and colleagues to support him through the year. Allan, Ron, Neil and Cat might be your guide for the day but be assured, you’ll get the same quality, passion, drive and fun as if Murray had been there himself.
