When I told my friends and family that I was considering writing this tutorial, they looked at me like I was crazy. “Why do you want to give away secrets that took you so long to learn?” “Why would you want to help a potential competitor get started in business?”

The answers were easy for me. First, the travel business is so vast that the chance of someone competing directly in my particular niche is pretty remote. Even if they do, there is still plenty of business to go around. Second, I am getting to the point where I intend to slow down a bit as I near retirement. And thirdly, helping others to manage and implement quality tours will only help the group travel business as a whole. Happy passengers will translate to more and more group travelers as they tell others of their experiences. Many of my vendors have mentioned how they appreciate the way we do business and how they wish their other customers were as organized. Helping the group travel business in general by educating new entries into the business is the primary goal.

I began my travel business in 1985. If I wanted to offer a tour to a destination with which I was unfamiliar, I hopped on an airplane and visited for a few days to learn about the area. I could easily spend a few hundred to a thousand dollars or more in expenses at each destination just to learn what is now readily available online. While it is always good to get the first-hand experience, it is not as necessary with all the tools now available on the internet.

There are many books, pamphlets, blogs, etc. about how to travel free. If you are looking for a pamphlet about the travel industry filled with false promises, loaded with pictures, and pages filled by repetition … then you should probably look elsewhere. We are not going to suggest you become a courier, house swapper or anything that is so limited in scope. We offer practical advice on how to get established as a wholesale or retail group travel professional and enjoy all the perks that go along with it.
