Alcohol Free. Sober. Sober-curious. Zebra-striping.

With all the terminology floating around the Mindful Drinking Movement, what is the definition of these phrases and which category do you fall under in terms of your relationship to alcohol?

📋 According to an article in NCSolutions, 49% of Americans are trying to drink less alcohol in 2025 while 25%,1 in 4 Americans, identify as non-drinkers, and 58% plan to try a non-alcoholic beverage.

So is the hospitality industry responding to the demands of its alcohol-free constituents?

✈️ While some say that the travel industry is slow to accommodate its alcohol free consumers, I’m a glass half full kind of gal.

🌴 Properties like in Aruba remain the island’s premier resort in terms of luxury, quality and service. Ewald Biemans, owner of the luxury property, enlisted the help of a dietician to craft his mocktails which happen to be first on the menu at the prestigious resort.

While I look at this as significant progress, I know we have a long way to go in terms of universal equality across the playing field.

The luxury properties have the means, the knowledge and the connections to implement a successful non-alcoholic program. With mixologists on retainer, the curation of quality libations, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, ensures properties that their 5 star reputation remains intact.

In the bustling heart of Washington DC, from January 10-12, 2025, the Mindful Drinking Fest unspooled an array of activities and workshops that captured the essence of what it means to be alcohol free in today’s society.

As the sober-curious movement gains traction, fests like this one become instrumental in my role as a travel advisor specializing in Alcohol Free Travel. I gained so many valuable insights into crafting unforgettable experiences that prioritize well-being and inclusivity.

The Mindful Drinking Fest was born out of a need for people to re-evaluate their relationship with alcohol; the need to place a scope on today’s drinking culture in a community setting.

Here’s what I learned at MDF:

👫The attendees ranged from teetotalers and sober-curious individuals to people participating in challenges like Dry January. This demographic shift shows that there is a significant market for travel experiences that don’t center around alcohol.

🍾The event also featured non-alcoholic spirit brands, non-alcoholic winemakers, and brewers of NA beer. Connecting with these changemakers in the industry enables me to learn what properties and cruise lines they are working with or hope to work with in the near future.
