Thanks to for joining us for a 4 days hike through some very moody weather last month. 🙏🏼💪🏼
Thankfully there were some calm spells such as this one. Before the star-gazing, time enough for fireside tea and tales.

We've been looking in the archives recently. I love the light in this one and that perfect moment with the little girl running into frame.
This was taken in the Ksar at Mhamid, across the river from the 'modern' village, so not many visitors know it's there. But it truly is from another time.

Thanks to for this! 🙏🏼💙

Looking down on the High Atlas Mountains, travelling North from Ouarzazate. They should be snow-capped by now, but it's not unheard of.
Fingers crossed for a change in conditions next month.

If you're planning a trip to the Sahara, and are happy to bypass Marrakech or Fes (on at least one/both of the travel days), we recommend using Ouarzazate airport as one of your transit points. Ouarzazate is connected to major hubs in Europe (UK, Spain, France, Portugal), as well as domestically.

From Ouarzazate, you can travel down to Mhamid El Ghozlane for desert hikes and/or onward camping trips to Erg Chigaga dunes.
Travel by public transport, with a private driver, or rent a car. We can provide details for all options.

And, if nothing else, you get to appreciate the scale of the Atlas peaks and wonder at how people live there.

The Erg Chigaga dunes at day's end.
The dunes sit at the heart of Morocco's Iriqui National Park, home to a variety of animal, plant and bird life.

Visit the dunes with us by foot, vehicle, or camel, and be prepared to camp - you decide how simple or how luxurious.

Try to time your visit around the new moon or when the moon rises during the day - allowing you chance to sit back and take in the Milky Way each evening.

NB: Our forthcoming photography workshop runs from 10 February during the period of the new moon.

Between October and December saffron is harvested.

As soon as a picker’s basket is full of flowers they are processed, when the three precious red filaments (stigmas) are carefully detached from the stem.

The bees love the pollen in the saffron flowers and jostle with the pickers for access to the flowers. After the stigmas have been removed, the flowers are left outside for the bees to collect the remaining pollen.

Right now we have a new moon. This means sitting down to dinner in the desert under the Milky Way...
This also means incredible timing for astrophotography and marvelling at the night sky.

Our Photography Tour in February runs to coincide with 3 nights spent in the desert under the period of a new moon.
Join your tutor to learn techniques for taking captivating night images from unique viewpoints.
Our Tour also covers incredible landscape shots, both within and out of the desert. Full details on our website.

The Addax is a critically-endangered species.*
We hope that you'll have the opportunity to see some of these beautiful, protected animals for yourselves on your next desert trip with us (notably in the Iriqui National Park). Many thanks for this great shot taken during your recent hike.

The number of survivors in the wild is estimated at fewer than 100 animals in Chad and Niger.
However, efforts to restore populations here in Morocco (and in Tunisia and Chad) are underway.

Large populations would have once covered great parts of the Sahara and Sahel.
The historic plight of the addax is symptomatic of pressures on precious desert ecosystems that have been overlooked and undervalued.

(*ref. the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF)).
