Second Star NYC: An Origin Story
The origins of Second Star NYC can be traced back to the year 2007, at the legendary Stony Brook University, where a psychology student named Dan de Jesus and a theatre student named Matthew J. Willings struck up an immediate friendship, bonding over a mutual love of graphic novels, video games, fine arts and (content has been removed). *cough cough*
Dan and Matt
soon moved to the land of Woodside, Queens, where they adopted a cat named Ninji and developed a sketch comedy show named The Dan and Matt Show, chronicling their adventures of eating halal, offending their friend Carl, and fighting zombies through slap fights. Meanwhile, in a nearby borough, a writer named Theresa Basile started a new job at the same non-profit organization where Matt worked. After several weeks of Matt pestering Theresa to get him coffee and Theresa ignoring his requests, they discovered a mutual love for comedy. Inspired by the episodes of The Dan and Matt Show that Matt made her watch on their lunch breaks, Theresa wrote an episode called “Bros” and sent it to Matt, to which he exclaimed, “Holy crap! This is hilarious!”
Matt then introduced Theresa to Dan, and they filmed “Bros.”
This comedy friendship spawned an entire first season of The Dan and Matt Show, in which many laughs were had, many orders of Thai food were placed, and many lessons about filmmaking were learned. One day, the three met in a coffee shop to discuss a new show idea inspired by their filming experiences – a comedy about six friends making their own film. This meeting turned into several months of writing, re-writing, rehearsing, and re-writing some more. Six months later, Working Title was born. The three friends then created Second Star NYC, a production company that highlights demographics underrepresented in traditional media. They now plan to take the new media world by storm and showcase the work of like-minded artists for years to come.
