Spirit Bear Lodge winner of the Indigenous Adventure Award sponsored by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) at the 2017 International Aboriginal Tourism Conference in Calgary Alberta Canada. The following video tells their story, of a very successful tourism business that is returning profits to the community, helping to reawaken the Kitasoo Xai’Xais culture and helping to conserve their ancestral territory.

It is an internationally significant model for community-based ecotourism within a globally significant conservation area, the Great Bear Rainforest. Today 25 out of 35 employees running the Spirit Bear Lodge operation are from the community. Guests come from all over the world to see the wildlife and learn about the Kitasoo Xai’Xais culture.

Douglas Neasloss the current Chief Councillor recently presented on Spirit Bear Lodge at the CREST/UN Environment Forum held in September 2017 in Washington DC to showcase the importance of the UN’s declaration of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

Spirit Bear Lodge has been listed as a Signature Experience by Canada Keep Exploring, an initiative of Destination Canada. Officially curated, the Canadian Signature Experiences are once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences.

"For government officials it’s easy to set goals by using the convenient turnstile of a passport check to count international arrivals. It’s more trouble and expense to collect more significant data: How long did visitors stay? What did they do? How much did they spend, on what, and who got the money? How did their presence affect local society, culture, and environment? Or the question rarely asked: How many is too many?"

Ignored for years, the tourism population explosion has now given birth to a new word: Overtourism. Like it or not, that will require rethinking how tourism works. But few governments are listening…

Visitors will be banned from climbing the sacred Uluru from October 2019, local authorities confirmed.
Aboriginal Australians have long asked visitors not to climb the outcrop, which was known for many years as Ayers Rock. Signs at the start of the climb ask people to abstain from going up in respect to the traditional law of the Anangu Aboriginal people, the custodians of the land.
“It is an extremely important place, not a playground or theme park like Disneyland,” board chairman and Anangu man Sammy Wilson was reported as saying.

"Ecotourism advances conservation using the lens of sustainable development (...) but funding has remained a stumbling block that makes it harder for this industry to continue to grow".

Don't miss the following article that features Martha Honey, leading expert in sustainable tourism and the executive director of CREST, Center for Responsible Travel.

Ecotourism is beginning to catch the eye of private investors and other funders who are interested in financing sustainable development, land rehabilitation, wildlife reintroduction, and/or conservation research. As with many first nation communities around the world, the opportunity to make money from tourism has come at a price. By opening up their culture to visitors, it is gradually eroding. “It is a conflict for many families,” photographer Karolin Klüppel, who spent time documenting the Mosuo, tells National Geographic. “Life is easier when you benefit from tourism but they also feel really saddened by the changes.”

High in the Himalayas, the last matriarchs of the Mosuo people struggle to keep ancient traditions alive.
