As part of the monitoring project of the emblematic "Las Balsas de Gibara" wetland, tomorrow we will begin to hold a preparation workshop on bird and waterfowl identification and wetland management, sponsored by the "Joaquín Fernández de la Vara Pi" Natural History Museum and with the participation of Nils Navarro, a Cuban ornithologist and author of various publications on Cuban birds, including the official list of birds of Cuba. Also participating will be specialists and technicians from the museum, members of the Gibara and Holguín Birdwatching Clubs, forest ranger groups, as well as representatives from the tourism, education, and communications sectors in the area.
This workshop aims to raise awareness among local stakeholders about the importance of this wetland, as well as to provide the necessary tools for the identification of waterfowl during monitoring. The program includes theoretical classes and visits to the wetland for monitoring spring migration. Las Balsas wetland is known for the numerous historical records of unreported birds as it is located within a funnel zone of the migratory bird corridor in Gibara.
We express our gratitude for the unconditional support from Birdscaribbeam, Optic’s for the tropics, Environment of America, Friendship Association, and the APRM East of the Los Colorados Archipelago.
