Get Out and Go Hunting GetOutAndGoHunting.com shares hunting like it is. Honest. Unapologetic. Sometimes ludicrous, but always memorable. Welcome.

Founded and edited by Shawn West, GetOutAndGoHunting.com was envisioned to be an open forum where narratives and trends in hunting could be explored and shared without the gimmicks, bias, and other trappings of political and corporate influence. In April of 2015, friend and fellow hunter Lucas Hunter became a partner in the team as the lead talent behind the graphic design and marketing aspects of

GetOutAndGHunting.com. Together these friends and hunting buddies hope to expand the reach of Get Out & Go Hunting while staying true to the original roots and mission statement of the site. Written and designed by hunters for hunters, Get Out & Go Hunting has always been dedicated to an authentic, humorous, and straightforward portrayal of the hunting experience. The site also provides unbiased reviews of equipment and gear, and a strong focus on ethical hunting and a positive public representation of the hunting tradition. Most importantly, Get Out & Go Hunting has always aimed to welcome non-hunters in building a greater understanding of the tradition.

Another successful spring turkey season wraps up today. As always we hunted hard, laughed too much, overindulged with our friends and family, and made a pile of memories chasing these amazing game birds.

Best of luck to those still grinding it out to the last minute today!

Ugly Birds.

I’ve heard them called that frequently, and I don’t understand it to this day. Explosions of colour, flamboyantly strutting and shaking, and a call to make you smile uncontrollably, while causing your heart to patter and your hands to shake.

What was ugly was that I didn’t put a good shot on this one after he did it just right. It happens, but I feel sick for the disrespect that did him. He didn’t deserve for it to end that way.

The shooting was the ugly part. But this heavy, sharp-spurred, hard-gobbling Ontario tom? Ugly?

Hardly.

After a single shot stung the dawn, I carried this gobbler back to my sitting tree, laid him down on the leaves, smoothed his feathers, pondered his life, and notched my tag while peace took over the woods again. I thanked him for what he’d taught me that morning, the memories he’d given me, and for the food he’d become for my friends and family.

And if it had instead ended with him trotting away into the oaks and maples and me ruing a missed opportunity, I’d still be thankful for the chance to chase him. Every minute spent in the presence of these birds is a gift, every opportunity to hunt them is a privilege, and every chance to lay hands on one is a form of communion.

I consider myself fortunate to have spent his last morning with him.

As we rocket towards another Ontario spring turkey opener, we’d like to take the time to remind you that reaping a gobbler is unnecessary and essentially cheating. Our thoughts can be found at the link in our bio.

People say diver ducks don’t eat well. We can assure you, at least in the case of some prime redheads we killed on Lake Erie, that those rumours are not true.

I was fortunate enough to cross a “bucket-list” hunt off my list this past November when I went on a layout boat duck hunt near Long Point on Lake Erie. Big water diving ducks were birds that I had not had a chance to hunt in the thirty years that I’d been waterfowling, and I snapped at the ch...
