Can you believe this is in the middle of the desert? Ash Meadows was such a wonderful surprise and we had the park almost entirely to ourselves which was a welcome reprieve from how busy Death Valley was!
About 50,000 years ago huge lakes covered much of Southern California and Nevada. As the Ice Age ended and the climate became warmer, the lakes began to dry up. Only the most resilient fish could survive in these small pools which are twice as salty as the ocean and can get up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit! The fish that manages to survive here after all of these years is called a pupfish. It’s bright blue and so very small, but it was really cool to learn about and to see them up close!
