Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir menningar- og viðskiptaráðherra segir afar mikilvægt að efla heilsárs markaðssetningu á Íslandi sem áfangastað ferðamanna, sérstaklega á þessum eldsumbrotatímum sem nú eru uppi. Hún undirritaði í gær samning við Íslandsstofu sem gildir til loka næs...

Last night at 23:14, the 7th eruption of 2024 (10th since 2021) began on the Reykjanes Peninsula. A 2.5 km fissure opened near Grindavík, catching many by surprise, as experts had expected this to happen closer to mid-December.
Magma had been accumulating 4-5 km beneath Svartsengi for weeks, but the sudden eruption reminds us how unpredictable nature can be.
Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely from Grindavík, the Svartsengi Power Plant, and The Blue Lagoon. Lava has crossed the road to Grindavík, cutting power, but the rest of Iceland is unaffected. Life continues as usual, and Keflavík Airport is operating as normal with no disruption to flights.
The eruption site is closed for safety, but this incredible natural event can be admired from a distance. Please remember to respect safety guidelines and stay clear of restricted areas.

Our friends at have posted brilliant content tirelessly through these years of events since this period of eruptions started.
📸 These photos were taken by us during the first hour of the eruption. It’s a humbling reminder of the power and beauty of Iceland’s nature.

A new eruption started at 22:00/ 10 p.m. close to the town of Grindavík tonight on the 18th December. Scientists have been anticipating an eruption after weeks of dramatic seismic activity originally starting on November 10th. This particular eruption started very abruptly and seems to be developing into a very large and long fissure. My photos are mainly screenshots from and in fact two photos as seen from the capital area. Last photo is a map of the area of the fissure just north of Grindavík. This is of course an event in progress, so far there can only be predictions as to how it can develop.
