Prior to and during the construction of Hoover Dam a man, who locals call ‘Bob’, lived in the Gaugers House at mile marker 53 for ten years to monitor water levels, flow rates, temperatures, and silt content to see if the area was suitable for a dam.

Every day he would trek the wooden catwalk, ride the cable car suspended above the bustling Colorado River to the Gaugers Station, at mile marker 54 on the Arizona side, to measure and test all those factors manually. His efforts were great, but as we know, that dam ended up being built about ten miles North of his lookout point.

The Gaugers Station and cable car still stand today. You can see them on your trip down the Colorado River. Ruins of the Gaugers House are still present and makes a great stopping point to stretch your legs and explore.
