Imagine this: thousands of logs rushing down the Muskegon River every single day, fueling the booming lumber industry that built Newaygo County. 🌊 Back in the lumbering era, our rivers weren’t just for paddling and fishing—they were highways for towering white pine logs, floated downstream to the mills. But with so much timber on the move, log jams were inevitable!

Today, you can still explore remnants of this history—walk the shores where loggers once stood, paddle the same waters that carried Michigan’s white pine to market, and picture a time when the Muskegon River was the heart of a booming industry. 🌊⛏️

When a tick bites, it does not hurt. It will stay attached for several days as it swells up with blood. An infected tick must be attached for 24+ hours before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted in most cases. Avoiding tick bites and quickly removing ticks are the best ways to prevent infection! Learn more prevention tips, how to remove a tick, and find tick identification help at bit.ly/MITickPrevention.

The year after the trail was authorized by Congress, the North Country Trail Association was established to work alongside the National Park Service and lead the coordination of volunteers, projects, partnerships with landowners and communities, and much more. While the trail was a bit shorter then, coordinating its management, maintenance, and protection would be no small feat. The success of the trail was - and still is - dependent on the collective power of many with a shared vision for America's longest National Scenic Trail.

Today, the trail stretches 4,800 miles across eight states. Thanks to your time, support, and dedication, the Association has been able to accomplish so much. Take a hike today to celebrate the progress the Association has made over the past four decades, and reflect on the role you've played in this success.

Adventure meets history just south of White Cloud, where the White River Railroad Bridge (aka the Great Railroad Trestle) has stood tall since 1875—completely made of wood! 🤯
Imagine the roaring trains of the Pere Marquette Railroad thundering across this 515-foot-long deck truss bridge, ferrying goods and passengers through Michigan’s wild terrain.
This isn’t just any bridge—it’s a rare piece of Michigan’s past, a testament to the craftsmanship of the 1800s, and one of the few deck truss bridges in the state! Nestled over the White River, it’s a must-see for history buffs, train enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike. 🌲✨
