The history of human evolution is complex, and new discoveries can potentially add to the number of identified species. As of my last update, recognized species of the genus Homo aside from Homo sapiens include Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis, and others. Some of these species are well-known and widely accepted, while others are based on more contentious fossil evidence and may be subject to debate.

While the exact number of hominin species is debated among scientists, it is true that there have been multiple species within the genus Homo, and that Homo sapiens is the only one that has not gone extinct.

Homo habilis: Considered one of the earliest members of the genus Homo, living approximately 2.1 to 1.5 million years ago. They were among the first to use stone tools.

Homo erectus: Lived between about 1.9 million and 140,000 years ago, and is known for being one of the first hominins to have a stature and proportions similar to modern humans. They also used more advanced tools.

Homo heidelbergensis: Lived between 600,000 and 200,000 years ago, and is thought to be a common ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans.

Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthals): Lived between about 400,000 and 40,000 years ago, overlapping with Homo sapiens and interbreeding with them to some extent.

Homo naledi: Discovered in South Africa in 2013, and while its exact place in the human family tree is still debated, it provides evidence for the diversity of hominin species.

Homo floresiensis (often referred to as the "Hobbit"): Lived on the island of Flores in Indonesia with dates ranging from about 190,000 to 50,000 years ago.

Denisovans: An extinct species or subspecies of archaic human known from DNA evidence and a few fossil fragments that suggest they lived in Eurasia and interbred with modern humans.

As a Filipino looking at our shared human ancestry, I am fascinated by the revelation that there were quite a few different species of humans.

Our early Filipino ancestors, known as the Negritos or Aetas, are thought to be among the first wave of humans to inhabit the islands thousands of years ago, arriving via land bridges that connected the Philippines to mainland Asia. This migration echoes the larger journey of our human species, moving, adapting, and surviving across continents and eras.

As we reflect on the diverse human species that once walked the earth, it becomes a source of national pride to recognize how our early civilizations in the Philippines have also contributed to human history, culture, and resilience. From the rice terraces of the Ifugao, carved by hand and passed down through generations, to the ancient barangays and the sophisticated social structures of pre-colonial times, our history is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity.

The fading away of our ancient human relatives is a poignant reminder of the impermanence of civilizations, including those that once thrived on our beloved islands. It compels us to preserve our heritage and continue the story of Homo sapiens with reverence for those who came before us and hope for future generations.

Once upon a time, Antirhodos was an island nestled within the eastern harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. This island thrived until the year 365, when a cataclysmic earthquake, believed to be one of the most monumental seismic events in the ancient Mediterranean world, unleashed a devastating wave of destruction, its ripples reaching as far as the distant shores of Spain. Now, this once-vibrant island lies beneath the waves, a submerged treasure trove of history, concealed near the modern seafront of Alexandria, at a depth of approximately five meters (16 feet).
