Some of my colleagues have made a brave but (if not now, soon…) inevitable decision.

Vatican tours? We quit.

Hard decision, but in 2024 "A Friend in Rome" will no longer offer Vatican tours .

"...it has become pretty clear that love for art, personal enrichment and faith are no more part of the picture." This might be the short explanation.

Gelato! One of the symbols of Italy, although some sort if it was mentioned even in the Bible, they say (Isaac offering a mixture of milk and fruit to Abraham), it is basically an Italian invention in its internationalized form. Italians took it to Paris, New York… and the rest is history. There are 36000 registered gelato-selling venues in Italy and I have sacrificed my afternoon on a quest for a perfect gelato in Rome. I have some new clues, not easy among twenty famous gelaterias offering a tasting… come to visit and I will share them with you!

2010 versus 2023, same place, same friend and the University of Virginia, designed by in the 19th century inspired by the Pantheon of Rome, the most re-used referral in the architecture of the western world. The Rotunda is heart of the community of scholars in what Jefferson termed “an Academical Village”. Lovely to see kids studying, see an exhibition on African American portraits from the early 1900s, have a stroll and a crab chowder in the old town of Charlottesville.

March 9th is a feast of St. Frances of Rome, a 14/15th century saint, founder of the Benedictine order of nuns known as Oblate (a person dedicated to God’s service). A bland looking building in the very heart of Rome is still a functioning nunnery, open to visitors only one day a year, revealing a marvelous cycle of frescoes representing Frances’ visions and miracles. She is a patron saint of automobile drivers and widows, the patron saint of Rome, jointly with St. Peter & Paul. Frances could see her guardian angel and had a gift of healing. So blessed to be here today!
